Stuck in route Canal

I'm stuck in the room with all the explosive barrels and can't seem to find any way out. Help is appreciated :D

Go up the ladder, over the pipe, into the next room. Drop down on the pipes until you get to a Valve, which should fill the room with water. Then go back into the other room and swim down the ladder and into the hole.

I did it the long way.
I actually dropped all of the barrels down into the water, and stacked them, so I could reach and get through that tunnel. Then I went back, and figured out that I could just turn a valve to bring the water up.
Hint: It's a classic Half-Life puzzle.
