Where is the Ivory Coast located?
ShadowFox

West Africa. It is officially called the Cote D'avoir (or something to that effect)
And it is a very unstable area. This happens to a lot of nations, and Americans and Brits anyway should realize it isn't a problem unique to the French.

Africa. Odd that the French would be involved militarily somewhere they weren't wanted.

no, the ivory coast has been a protectorate of france since 1842. They're independent but in 1961 they made an agreement with france to supply them with weapons and capital ...kinda like what the US was doing with saddam since the early 80's. France has had troops deployed in the Ivory coast since 2002

Just because france is opposed to the America invasion of Iraq doesn't mean they are peacefull hippies.
They just don't like the idea of the US controlling evrything in the world. that's all. otherwise, they're not that much different.

They also had economic interests in Iraq. I'm no France basher, but I'd be willing to bet principle wasn't their main reason for opposing the war.

One word: Napolean. Though besides him, French military history doesn't compare to other nations.

Nah, the gauls had Rome at it's knees once, which is impressive.
Still, anyone rebelling is screwed. If I were them, I'd lie down and wait for a French warplane to bomb my ass.

The people of Gaul became the people of France

Napolean was Corsican. The last time the French had a great military was when a Corsican was in charge. By the way, does anyone know at what point in history Gaul became France, and how that happened? I've been looking for awhile now, can't seem to find anything.

france was called gaul during the roman era, but became the Frankish Kingdom in 485 AD from which came the name France ...
now that I've answered your question maybe you can answer mine: why do americans despise the french?

I'd say the Gaul families of the Merovingians and the Carolingians helped lay the foundations, and once the Empire of Charlemagne was split up, it was only a matter of time until Frankish decendants formed the French culture.

I'm a yank and I love the French. France is a great place and Parisians are awsome. Instead of saying, "Why do Americans despise the French?", next time say, "Why do some Americans despise the French?" Sorry, don't mean to nit-pick, but I think the anti-French crap and the boycotting people like Bill O'Reilly do is so stupid and silly.

race? being french is a race? is being canadian a race? i didnt think so. i cant believe everyone is all uppity about people hating the french. no one hates the french, its an urban legend. even i dont hate the french, im just trying to initiate conversation between myself and stern.
innervision.. there is no double standard. i just retaliate against countries (if you think im serious about the french in this instance, see above) who show such hate of my own. i dont even particularly like bush, im just willing to take the "unpopular" viewpoint, because its fun.

C'mon, man, French bashing is almost like a National Pastime here in the States. It's good, harmless fun. I mean, just look at them, they have funny accents, they look down their noses at Americans, they have an annoying habit of surrendering without provocation, and they think Jerry Lewis is a comedic genius. There's just too much material there NOT to poke fun. Get a grip.
I actually would like to visit France, lots of history there.

i don't see how this is "bad news for france". since when does the whole african continent hold a chance against france?
oh and- french people have a funny accent? here's the news: it's totally possible for a frenchman to learn english and sound like he was born in an english place with no accent whatsoever which is my case, or at least would be if i had the occasion to speak english outside the internet more often. but the opposite in impossible. don't believe me? go talk to someone who knows french good, and tell him to pronounce the letter U in french. then try to say it. just a letter. i bet that you'll give up before succeeding :)
maybe it's not impossible but i don't think i have ever saw an englishman without a huge-ass accent when attemping to speak french. however when we speak english it's barely noticeable that we are french.
YOU have a funny accent :)
by the way it's really alright that americans make fun of France. seems quite fair since the whole damned world now has America as it's primary joke target :D

I beg to differ, sir. I am from the Midwest, and have no accent. People from the northern states like Minnesota have an accent. People from the south, like Georgia, have an accent. I have none.
