Leaking games seems to be a fad or something

You are wrong, leaking has been going on for years, you just now have realized it since the games you like its happening too.

yeh, valve was like the first thing ever leaked .. and other 'hottest titles' have been leaked to. ie, painkiller, stalker.

note: Doom 3 was leaked before hl2. Also leakings been going on for ages, welcome to the internet. :)

I actually just think the media proper has only recently begun really paying attention to it, so thats why we're hearing so much.

Let's measure the patience of gamers by counting the months/days before release when the games leaked:
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas - 6 days (gold copy, NTSC format)
Halo 2 - Approx. 1 month (gold copy, french language, PAL format)
Half-life 2 - 14 months (pre-beta, what Valve made by 09/2003)
Doom 3 - 27 months (it was a stolen e3 demo build, not even alpha)

A lot of other games get leaked to p2p networks usually a week before release. This isn't usually a big deal, since some stores may get their copies quite early. coughwarcraftthreecough

Of course I know things leak all the time, and yes I knew D3 leaked prior to hl2's leak. I'm just saying all the biggest games all at once seemed to leak.

The Doom3 leak was something... heck, really, they didn't even steal an alpha build. It was a tech demo that was stolen, basically. No optimization and therefore horrible framerates, no real gameplay, three weapons... it was indeed nothing but a demo for E3. A pre-alpha build, but lots of hype it created!

I have no doubts that HL2 will leak before the release, too. Probably about a week before it.

it wasn't at once. All it is, I can almost promise you, is that you have jut fairly recently gotten interested (seriously interested, ie lots of online communities) in games. Because of that, the leakings seem like they're happing really quickly and abnormally.
