A Perfect Circle -- eMOTIVe

I'm practically at bursting point waiting for this album. It's only been just over a year since Thirteenth Step was released, and already we've got new A Perfect Circle. This really suprised me, because I thought Maynard was going to focus on Tool's new stuff for the rest of the year. :D I know it's just a covers album, but if these songs are as good as their cover of "The Nurse Who Loved Me", it should be worth just as much as an album full of new material.

Along with Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster's new stuff (The Royal Society), this is the album I'm most looking forward to this year. Any other APC fans around?

It's a cover of a song by Failure.

And I really like APC's take on Imagine. Which is why I'm pretty damn excited. :)

when i first heard imagine on the radio i recognised maynard's voice but it didnt sound like something he would write. but i cant wait for this new cd, APC kicks so much ass. I saw them live in Salem, Oregon a few months back, ****ing kicked ass!

Once this album is done I believe Maynard will be focused on the new Tool CD, right now they are just toying around.

I love APC's stuff. I have a great live APC cover of them doing Ashes to Ashes by David Bowie. Great stuff too. I am a bit hesitant over a cover album by them though, it just seems so naaasty.

Whoa, the website shows the peace sign and turns into the APC logo, showing the way in which the logo actually does make a perfect circle. I thought I was really smart when I found out about 2 months ago that the logo was the shading of one outside edge and one inside edge of a 3d circle. Now I know that is in fact what it is.

Thought I'd bump this for a little review..

The album is incredible, although, it's very soft, it's kind of like Opeth's Damnation of APC albums.
Lots of great melodies and sounds.

I wasn't a big fan of their earlier work but this is awesome.

Just got it myself, "Incredible" is the perfect word to describe it. :) A perfect Circle were always better at ambient, mellow songs, and I'm glad they focused on that sort of music for this album. "Peace, Love And Understanding", "Let's Have A War", "Annihilation" and "What's Going On" are my favourites.

Passive seems to be an old Tapeworm (project involving NIN members, Tool members, Phil Anselmo and various others) song with a few changes here and there. I remember APC performed it live, when it used to be called "Vacant". I guess after Tapeworm died off, it was free to use.

I don't know what is bothering people so much about this album. It's not a cover album, it's an album of re-interpretations which I really enjoyed. The 2 APC originals on it (Passive and Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drum--A remix of APC's "Pet") were phenomenal.

The problem I'm finding is that people are approaching this album with a fixed idea of what APC is in their minds. You have to let that go and appreciate the artistic genius of the album. They're conveying a message with the album and don't want to mess around.

Imagine is different, sure, and I liked the original. But the new version takes a song which was originally agressive with passive tones and decides to put some fight into it.

Counting Bodies Like Sheep(...) is a really powerful song, with a grinding, plodding sort of mechanical feel to it that I really enjoy and really agressive lyrics.

I'm not a diehard APC fan. Hell, I didn't even buy Thirteenth Step, but I really, really loved this album. A couple of songs I didn't like but overall I enjoyed it.

So say what you will, but try to approach the album with an open mind. It really is quite interesting.

I do think Mer De Norms was brilliant tho.

I'll definitly give this new album a listen, though I really dont like the cover of Imagine :/ I mean, I get the message, I get where hes coming from with the dark minor tones,. but it just seems too overbearing.

On an almost related note, have you heard REV 20:20 from the Underworld soundtrack?

Yeah, that REV 20:20 song was a phenomenal track. I swear, Maynard James Keenan and Danny Lohner have some sort of Midas Touch.

And Thirteenth Step is a brilliant album, you just have to give it a chance. it's a lot more organic and progressive than Mer De Noms.

Yeah, it took me ages to warm to it. A friend of mine kept insisting it was brilliant and played it around me every opportunity he got, but it never really clicked with me, it was a little too ambient and progressive. Then I got my own copy and it's one of my favourite albums, right up there with Deloused In The Comatorium :D

Actually, it's taking longer for me to warm to Mer De Noms, having heard this one first. It's too heavy!! >_<

Anyway, as soon as I get payed back the money I'm owed, I'm gonna go out and get Emotive and the new Dream Theater DVD :)

gotta love em both, maynard said in an interview that the reason he started APC was cuz he ran out of things to write for Tool and didnt want to end up like every other band on the planet writing shit. But after eMOTIVe is released (TOMARROW) he is going back into the studio with Tool to make a new cd!

The way I heard it, APC's origin came about when Maynard and Josh Freese (drummer) were flatting with Billy Howerdel (lead guitar/composer), who'd been touring with NIN as the guitar tech. Josh told Maynard that Billy had been writing some pretty insane stuff while on tour, so Maynard proposed they confront him about it and offer their assistance and thus APC was born. Feel free to correct me.

Got the CD. Was dissapointed first listen, despite making my best efforts to leave any pre-concieved ideas at the door. But the more I listen to it... wow, this is a brilliant album :D

I have only heard Imagine and i must say i didnt much like what they did with it.
I like apc and Tool but that song should have been left alone.
Its like using paint shop pro on the sisten chapel or guernica

It's a retooling of a Tapeworm song called Vacant, a project that involved Maynard (as well as Trent Reznor, Phil Anselmo, Danny Lohner et al.), but eventually died. They played it live once as a a tapeworm cover.

oh i didnt know that, still a good song. i dont think apc failed at all with this cd, sometimes you just gotta accept what the artist has done, and youll eventually see why they did it and enjoy it
