MUSE
Check them out. They`re pretty big in Europe, but most americans havent even heard about them. Pretty "big" music, so stay away if you`re into lo-fi garage rock or The Strokes stuff. They have been dubbed the "next Queen", and rightly so..
Here are some tunes from their own webpage.
New Born (http://www.muse.mu/audio/New_Born_Audio_Hi.wma) - Slow piano intro followed by a massive rock riff that leads the song into a cool punk-ish rock-bomb.
Apocalypse Please (http://www.muse.mu/audio/apocalypse_100k_Audio.wma) - Massive piano based song, perfect for those oppressive moods. Reminds me of HL2 actually.
Let me know if you want more recomendations.

Muse are heavily influenced by Radiohead. So much so that an uninformed listener would mistake them for Radiohead. This means that Radiohead would be the band to change rock music forever.

The first album is influenced by Radiohead, but the rest of the stuff is clearly miles away from the stuff Radiohead have.

Yeah, because we all know the only instrument that plays proper music is the piano. Everything else just sounds like meaningless white noise. :P

For those who are into the more melodic piano based stuff
Sunburn (http://www.muse.mu/audio/Sunburn_100k_Audio.wma)
and for those more interessted in rock stuff
Citizen Erased (http://www.muse.mu/audio/Muse - Citizen Erased_100k_Audio.wma) Their best song, IMO.
AND,
rocky piano stuff, with a touch of camp musical-ishness

Seriously, anyone who is into Muse needs to get the Hullabuloo DVD, great stuff. Please note it only has tracks from their first two albums.

the difference being, radiohead sucks lmao. muse is more upbeat, less ambient/emo-depressing. their songs are much more enjoyable and much more memorable. they have way more musical talent than radiohead, imo, they play everything from slow and depressing, to head-banging rock. and every song they have kicks ass. they are a brilliant band, and they kick total ass live. :E
Cerpin
16-10-2004, 03:07 AM
Yeah. Plus, their live stuff is awesome too. They make EVERY, and I mean, EVERY song sound as if their lives was depending on it. Their massive sound is truly something to experience live. You wouldnt believe a guitar, a bass and drums could sound this huge and monumental.
I like a few of their songs:
Time is Running Out
Bliss
House of The Rising Sun
Which is pretty good because I am often picky towards what I like from a certain band. The only group that I like pretty much all of their songs is The Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Which is why I never buy cd's..

personally, i'm tired of every band being compared to readiohead.. usually it's not even an accurate comparison. however, in this case it is :) i don't like either of the songs posted, mainly b/c of the vocals. but also, it just kinda sounds like the band is trying too hard, imo. it's like "hey let's take some generic piano bashing and put some generic minor-key pop over it.. yay, oh and don't forget the thom yorke impersonator! keke". they're borrowing glassian minimalism in both of those songs.. not really a new thing but it's somewhat less common than the rest of their sound :|

Radiohead already HAS changed rock music forever... muse is one of the bi-products of that :P
Edit: Incidentally, when I first heard muse's music (new born, the first track of OOS) I burst out laughing. Why, I hear you ask? Well I'm personally very familiar with a lot of classical music, and the song literally steals an extremely common classical chord progression and turns it into heavy rock. Having read reviews, I was expecting "classical INFLUENCE" not "classical piece X played with distorded guitar". I found it rather amusing to hear such a familiar classical progression played so heavily :E
Having since listened to a lot more of muse's music, though, it seems that they "borrow" classical chord progressions in this way in the majority of their songs. I don't have a problem with bringing elements of classical music to rock music (far from it), but in Muse's case, most of the chord progressions are directly copied, and as a result, I don't have all that much respect for them as composers. Originality is extremely important in music, especially to me, since I put a lot of effort into making sure my own music is original.

pffft... they are that pretentious. but i seriously disagree, whats your justification for that claim? besides, even if muse was a bi-product, isnt it sad that they are much, much better than radiohead?

pffft... they are that pretentious. but i seriously disagree, whats your justification for that claim? besides, even if muse was a bi-product, isnt it sad that they are much, much better than radiohead? Pretentious... god, don't start with the high-and-mighty music critic buzzwords :P .. There's nothing more 'pretentious' than placing yourself above what a musician\band is trying to achieve and dismissing it, simply because what the band considers important isn't important to you.
As for justifying my outrageous claim, I made it mostly in fun :P , but I will say that Radiohead have been extremely influential, and have helped to define what alternative rock is today. Their dabbling with electronics on the enormously successful Ok Computer, and their disregard of convention on subsequent albums, has given direction to many other bands. It seems very likely to me that in their early stages, Muse were heavily influenced by albums like The Bends and Ok Computer, and the timing of when they started releasing music (and the nature of that music) certainly supports that theory.
And as far as Muse being "much much better" goes, I strongly disagree. I find Muse's music to be fairly contrived in many cases, and lacking in the depth that Radiohead's music has. Of course, being different bands, they will appeal to different tastes, so it's probably best that we both accept each other's opinions on the matter, rather than trying to force the idea that either one is "better" on anyone else.
(also, on an unrelated note, you never did respond to my point in your "Give me ONE reason..." thread :P, any particular reason?)

its not like i think radiohead has been NON-influential over the last 7 years or so... and i can see some influence on muse to be sure. but imo, muse is far more varied in the styles of music they play. listen to 'stockholm syndrome' and you'll be wanting to mosh and banging your head. listen to 'endlessly' and you'll be wanting take a drive and cruise 'n' groove. listen to 'space dementia' and you'll be so completely relaxed. radiohead has some decent songs ('2+2=5', 'exit music (for a film)', 'go to sleep', 'creep', etc...), but in all the songs ive listened to by them, nothing has really grabbed me and made me go "woah!"
but with muse, nearly every song ive listened to has become 'my favorite'.
*time is running out
*muscle museum
*sunburn
*bliss
*butterflies and hurricanes
*plug in baby
*hyper music
*apocalypse now
i mean, the list goes on... and every single one of those songs is brilliant and unique in its own way.

Here lies the point. Some types of music immediately hit you. They grab you and reveal themselves right away. Then, on the other hand, there is music that takes time to reveal itself... that you discover something new about each listen.. that you discover a new interpretation every time you try to understand it. Such music is generally a bit "meh" on the first listen, but as it gradually sinks in, you discover the vast intellectual and emotional depth of the music, and it blows you away much more than a song that reveals all it has to reveal in the first few listens.
Muse are the "hit people with something big and impressive right from the start" type of band. Radiohead are the "ambiguous, slow reveal" type of band. This is what I've been going on about when I've said that muse lack the depth of Radiohead's music. Once you discover that depth, you can never look at music like that of muse in the same way again. Of course, not everyone wants depth in their music (look at top 40 pop) but I'm willing to bet that those who experience the depth of Radiohead's music would get more, and deeper, enjoyment out of listening to that, than a muse fan would get listening to his\her favorite muse tracks.
Edit: About the bush thread, I guess it doesn't matter if you don't go back to it, but if you ever do, you'll find my point reiterated a couple of times in the last few pages, it shouldn't be that hard to find :)

Anyone agree? Many, many people feel the same way about Radiohead's music.
Personally, though, I find their most 'depressing' music to be their most uplifting. Part of what Radiohead's music is all about, is taking things that are hard to deal with, or things that people would normally avoid thinking about, and turning it into something constructive and uplifting. It's an outlet.. a release for your inner darkness, and that of humanity as a whole. It asks you to take a look at that darkness, acknowlege it, and accept that it is a part of who you are, rather than hiding it from yourself. Many people find that aspect of Radiohead's music (whether they are aware that it's there or not) too confronting, but the result is music that emotionally resonates on levels that not a lot of music touches on. Personally, nothing induces goosebumps, or tingles up the spine, quite like Radiohead's darker moments.

Muse are great, although I think Radiohead are better. I also don't think it matters that radiohead are pretentious, if i didn't listen to pretentious music i'd own about four CDs.
One thing that is similar about both bands is they both evolve, although muse has never gone into experimental mode to the extent radiohead did with Kid A and Amnesiac, they still keep their music fresh.
And as for the whole copying thing, muse were obviously inspired by radiohead, but i don't think they ripped them off. If that's your logic then radiohead totally ripped off Aphex Twin when they brought out Kid A.
