View Full Version : Thoughts on the game?
Hmm, this game sounds good.. but I have my doubts, they have tried a mmofps with planetside, and I personally did not like it, well it was fun but not long lasting.
Oh Im so sorry "XORG" as they like to call themselves.. O_o

Planetside isn't really a rpg though. Neocron was pretty good albiet they bit off more than they could chew developing it. This will be more of a blend between mmorpg and fps. I have high hopes for this game and the fact that they have an engine in advance only is a good thing. Being the source engine is even better =) Just allows them to focus on world building and content and balancing right off the bat, not as much pure coding as there would be had they needed to maske their own engine. And considering one of sources main inceptions was to be mod friendly, this makes it even a better thing.
Although reading all their discussions on their forums makes me wonder if they are also biting off more than they can chew. Time will tell. But i have high hopes they can pull it off

Yea this game reminds me of when PS was still very young in its development and there was all these features listed and quite a few got scraped. If they are to implment all these features it will definetely be over a long string of expansion packs, any company that thinks they can put that much into it on initial release is way too idealistic.

If it has a monthly fee, I'm not playing it, even though I like rpg's.
There's just too many mmo's out there for them to make a ripple.
Not to mention EQ, SW:G, Matrix, Lord of the Rings....
And Guild Wars, that has no monthly fee.
My 50 cents.

I'm more interested in seeing that extreme of source's capability, cause htere are some ambitious mods out there who wanna make their own MMOs :P
like sourceworld, except fenric might yell at me for calling it an mmo :P
edit: maybe I'm just talking out of my ass again

Of course there will be a monthly fee, you think game servers and content updates pay for themselves? Dream on. However the monthly charge on MMOPRPGs is fairly negligible when you weigh it against the amount of time you spend playing. $10 - $15 a month is a pittance when you might log 100+ hours of game time. Going to the cinema costs about the same and you get 2 - 3 hours entertainment. :dozey:

This will probably be a good game. I won't play it though because of the monthly fee. It would be nice if they gave a free trial.

mmorpg's don't need to aks youre money, Anet (ArenaNet is a wholly owned subsidiary of NCsoft Corporation, and was founded in March 2000 by key members of the creative teams behind Blizzard’s game series Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo, as well as the Battle.net gaming network. You can get a lot of good information about the company at our website: www.arena.net) proves it with guild wars. And guild wars looks good to imo.
@ Everyone complaining about the monthly fee.
Ask yourself this - Would you work for free? :x

It's somehow instinctual I believe. Pity given, that the fees aren't prohibitively expensive for the enjoyment gained. :dozey:

I can't pay for it tho.
I have no creditcard.
You don't usually need a credit card for MMO's. They usually always except Switch/Solo cards and plus, by the time this is out them gamecard things should be alot more common for MMO's.

Is that the only face you can make?!?
As for the money issue, I accept your argument completely (minus the rather immature mono-expression) however as a consumer, I always take and play that is the best and cheapest. If I can play a similar game for cheaper, I would play it.
Besides, I buy DVD's so I can skip to my favorites places, or listen to commentaries and watch extra features. That and watching again and again...so, more than 2-3 hours.

this looks cool, i got a question though. what is the combat like? fps style or do you just press attack which makes the guy aim and fire automatically?

guildwars is sorta like diablo. the main city is hosted by the company while the quests are hosted by the people playing in it
and planetshift is free because they rely on donations. they are not looking for a profit

How can you explain Guild Wars then ?
And Planeshift ?
Guild Wars, while seemingly free, will be releasing bi-yearly expansions, including all new features, being as big as the first release, if not bigger. These expansion packs will cost the same as the game (around $50 USD) which, if you do that math, is a little less than $10 USD a month (assuming you buy the expansions). Also, it uses the advanced streaming technology, allowing them to update on the fly, so no server maintence, down time, and so on. Aaaand, lastly, the whole entire game, will be hosted on one server, and this will work do to instanced quest areas, for you and your team.. So no kill stealing, loot stealing, clogged areas, lag, and such.
Planeshift? No clue.
