View Full Version : PC Gamer US vs. PC Gamer UK... Which is better?

I have a questions that's been nagging me today...

It's time to renew my subscription to PC Gamer. I usually buy the US version, and so far it's done me well. However with all the early reviews and good comments I hear from people about PC Gamer UK has, would it be a better option to subcribe to that instead? I could probably afford subscribing to both, but I'd rather not.

What is everyone's opinion on the two magazines? I notice that PC Gamer US usually gives outrageously high scores., and that the issues are getting thinner and thinner.. maybe that's just me though. I DID manage to read the Doom 3 PC Gamer UK review. In my opinion it was better than the US version, more detailed pictures and brilliantly written. The only thing that's holding me off on ordering the UK version as well is the price... I live in Canada, so it would cost approximately 70 Pounds per year for a subscription. That's well over $100 Canadian, with the exchange rate factored in. Is the magazine worth this price? At all? Can anyone give me a detailed explanation of how this magazine is different from the US version?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hey don't ask me, I'd just say something like "PC GAMER UK is better, because it's British." I haven't read PC GAMER US, ever, and of course the problem is that the release dates are different and everything in it relates to England, not America. However, if what you say about the US version is true it probably is better in terms of quality.

PS: PCGUK is the strictest games mag I know in terms of review scores and does a fine line in completely random extras (like the budget reviews written by the mag's resident adventure game specialist. There aren't many advemnture games so he has to do budget games as well and he's completely bored with it. It's rare that a budjet review has anything at all to do with the game bar a tacked on "oh yeah, this game is quite good but not really worth buying" at the end.)

I'm just gonna take a stab in the dark here, but I'd imagine people from the US will say that PC Gamer US is better and that people from the UK will say that PC Gamer UK is better. Just a guess.

Pc Gamer UK is better because it's got more stuff in it, the USs version is tiny in comparison. :)

Hah... yep... I doubt many of us have actually read both...

I know I wouldn't pay extra to get a magazine from a different country... that's pretty overkill...

PC GAMER originated in the UK. The US version seems to be substantially thinner than the UK version. I haven't read the US version, though I have seen it when I was on holiday once (In the Isle of Wight of all places). I am Brit. What do you think I think is best? ;)

I rate PCGamer UK high due to the mbeing able to give level headed reviews. I look at PCGamer US's reviews and I constantly see massive scores for somewhat medicore games. I'm not saying that I dislike PCGamer US, I'm just not to keen on their reviewers.

I have no clue which is better, I don't even read PCG. Once in a while i will buy it off the news stand. Although personally I think it would be extremely dumb to pay over 100 CA dollars just for a 1 year subscription. Just buy the US version, it's cheaper for you, a bit worse probably, but i don't think you should waste that much money.

Personally I read a magazine called MAXIMUM PC, it's more on the hardware side, it only costs 12 dollars a year!

Maximum PC and PC Gamer US are sister companies... I think the pcgamer guys and maximum pc guys are in the same building even. I subscribe to both Maximum PC and PC Gamer to get both sides, gaming and hardware.

Are you sure? I remember PC Gamer US being a lot smaller than the UK version, which is just huge in comparison. The paper is not only larger, but it's better quality and the magazine itself is thicker. Maybe the UK version got smaller recently, I never read it these days...

I prefer PC Format. Though I have been tempted over to the dark side (PCG) a few times recently. Mostly out of boredom (nothing to read).

Edit: Just had a look at your HL/NS levels KagePrototype. They're good. Gonna do any for HL2 when it comes out?

Man, I miss PC Accelerator.... that was a funny ass PC gaming magazine...

Anyhow, Barnes and Noble's/Borders has both PCG UK and US. From what I 've seen, the uk version is thicker and bigger physically than the US version, but the overall quality(of reviews and articles) of both magazines is top notch. I'd be happy reading either publication but I'd have to go for the US version because it is chaper for me... :)

I hope to. I've got a few ideas running through my head, so hopefully something will pan out. Though I would like to actually finish a project before working on anything HL2-related. :P

Anyway, as for gaming magazines, Edge simply cannot be beaten IMO.

Personally, I don't care for gamespots reviews. But to each his own.

PC Accelerotor was the best gaming mag ever, I have all the issues. If you liked PC accelerator then get PC Gamer US, because some of the staff went to PC Gamer US, and they have some similar articles/attitude.

I used to buy PCGamer every month, honestly I had several draws full of just PCGamer, but I stopped buying magazines when I found out I could get all the demo's and information on the internet for free! I'm buying next issue though with the Half-Life 2 review (hopefully) in.

PCG UK:

1. It's (not) to short
2. Bunch of Racist (but only against the french) except not really because it's tongue-in-cheek, and not very often
3. It's to short, except not
4. they think they have the best mag.
5. Reviews own, six page review ?
6. It's to short for a novel
7. The editors are good
9. You guessed it, it's (not) to short

So how do they compare?

I've yet to find a decent pc mag.

Compared to Edge (and Games TM for that matter) they're poorly written, uninformative and (very) biased (based on the UK editions of pc gamer/zone). Maybe the US editions are better (probably not, though - remembers EGM and shudders)

Who used to buy Super Play? that was a mag worth reading :)

how can you compare US whith UK when all the people who buy the seperate versions live on the OTHER SIDE OF THE ATLANTIC and have probally never even SEEN copy of the other version?

anyway, i sibscribe to PCG here in the UK, and i love it all, the humour and the reveiws, compared to other magazines (like edge, a load of depressed old men reminissing about the retro games and stating that all of todays games are shite in comparison...) PCgamer rocks. Peace out
