What is this 1st 2nd and 3rd test everyone is talking about, is it the tests VU has done and sent back to Valve for bug squashing?

No, the tests are puzzles that valve has given us. They haven't given them to us directly, rather they've hidden them in various places. For example the second test was hidden in a file in one of the HL2 preloads

1st related to a visit from a forum member to Valve HQ. He took a photo of a whiteboard which had encoded information to a secret Half-Life 2 website.

2nd test involved a link on half-life2.com that led to a ....picture of a barnacle. As you could imagine we were deliriously excited at seeing a thumbnail pic of a barnacle..

3rd test is ..i don't know i just woke up.

I think someone needs to write up a history of the "tests" so that any future news posts relating to them can simply link to it and explain everything.

EDIT: pfft. looks like someone already did that. Nevermind.

@The Lost EVA: The tests are just a fun little game that Valve came up with on their Half-Life2 website www.half-life2.com that involves the community looking at little hints that they have thrown around and using them to guess passwords that link us to neat little things inside the website. The last test linked to a high resolution concept art image from Half-Life 2.
