It does?! No wonder I only noticed a 12 FPS difference from my old Geforce 4 to my new 9800 Pro.

Go into console and type fps_max ###. If it doesn't go high as you want then it means your refresh rate is lower than it.(i.e. max set at 150 but you are only getting 120 fps, refresh rate is 120 then.)

And turn off Vsync.. it got me 40 more fps's.

Vsync limits fps to your monitor's refresh rate to prevent image tearing.
I play with vsync on and a refresh rate of 100 Hz so I get 100fps constant. :)

You'll also need to type "fps_modem ###," make it the same as fps_max

Who cares? Anything over 60 fps isnt noticable.

Ah yes. The never ending "xxx framerate is all your eyes can see anyway" argument..

Shadow, go tell a military pilot (preferrably jet) that the human eye can only see at 60 frames a second and see what he says.. :)

Let's not go there. Some people can recognize it. The human eye does not record frames like a camera, it's a constant stream of impulse data and shit. You might not be able to see it, others can. We've been over this before. Stay OT plz.

It seems like I read this discussion at least twice a day... for ****'s sake...

And I'll have to try the fps_modem thing... never heard of that before... maybe it'll help my poor, poor Day of Defeat... maybe... ;(

This topic is about raising framerates. We're talking about framerates.. how is it OT? :|

Im not making this up, I play alot of cs and when my fps is lower then 75( for a consistant amount of time) my eyes start to water and my mouse movements arn't as accurate.

I get 100fps, try typing developer 1 in console.

I'm not going to argue it, and I'm sure that you feel that it helps. But it might be more psychological than anything else.

So what is the answer to how many frames per second should we be looking for? Anything over 60 fps is adequate, 72 fps is maximal (anything over that would be overkill). Framerates cannot drop though from that 72 fps, or we will start to see a degradation in the smoothness of the game. Don't get me wrong, it is not bad to play a game at 30 fps, it is fine, but to get the illusion of reality, you really need a frame rate of 72 fps.
