I'm left handed and use the arrow keys for movement and the mouse is on the left side of the keyboard and is used for aiming. May sound kinda weird to those who play with wasd but it works fine for me.

I have my keys set near the center of the keyboard so that my index and pinky can hit more keys.
soundwave, never thought about that before. seems kinda obvios now- that left handed people would use the mouse on the left of the keyboard... meh.

I gave up on arrows a long, long time ago. It requires you to bend your wrist strangely, and you don't have immediate access to any other keys (shift, spacebar, control, and the numbers are easier to reach with WASD) just my .02

I used arrows when I played the original DOOM and DOOMII but I started using wasd when HL came out.

I used arrow keys for a long time... then I tried WASD with Morrowind and decided to stick with that from then on out.

I remember hearing someone used a joystick to play Half-Life. Surreal.
I abandoned arrow keys with my .286. :)
i remeber that for some reason i played the original quake with arrows and then A and Z to look up and down. Never did complete it.

No kidding. That must be impossible to aim with.
Anyway, I'm another WSAD folk.

Ok, let's see... Right-hand for mouse, left-hand for keyboard. Thumb for spacebar, pinky for CTRL and SHIFT. 3 middle fingers for WASD, plus, when appropriate, Q and E, R and F, Tab, and the number keys.

I r teh leftie. I'm used to my mouse being on the right as well. People always ask me why I use my right hand for the mouse if I'm left-handed, it really annoys me. :)

Well since others are posting their full control setups, may as well post mine.
Mouse on left hand side - aiming
Arrow Keys - Movement
Right ctrl - crouch
right shift - walk
kp_ins (the 0 on the numpad) - reload in most games/secondary grenade in TFC
kp_end (the 1 on the numpad) - last weapon used/grenades in tfc + halo
left mouse button - fire
right mouse button - jump
middle mouse button - melee attack in halo/"use" in most other games
Enter - secondary fire
I think that's about it. I love it and will probably never switch to wasd. I'm simply too used to my current setup and it gives me no problems.

HL/CS controls
Movement: WASD
Walk: Left Shift
Crouch: Ctrl
Use: E
Reload: R
Quickswich: Q
Flashlight: F
Jump: Space
It's the standard set up. I used to have problems with the left 'windows' button because I would reach for Ctrl with my pinky and end up hitting 'windows' at the same time. All I did to fix that was to remove my 'windows' button. Since then, I've not had any problems with it.
Ravenshield/Athena Sword
Movement: WASD
Walk: Shift
Use: Space
Lean Left: Q
Lean Right: E
Fluid Open Door: X
Fluid Close Door: C
Reload: R
Primary Weapon: 1
Secondary Weapon: 2
Items: 3+4 (grenades, flashbangs, Heartbeat Sensor...)
Nightvision: 5
Rate of Fire: B
Map: G
Go Codes: H,J,K,L,N
Posture: Mouse Wheel Up, Mouse Wheel Down (since I replaced the default X+C for fluid door controls, I made the Mouse wheel up as getting up from a lower posture and Mouse wheel down as getting down from a higher posture. Standing, Crouching, Prone...)
Left Mouse Button: Fire
Right Mouse Button: Zoom (with scope or just natrual zoom)
Secondary Fire: Alt
Fluid Leaning: Ctrl+ Left mouse movement or Right mouse movement, double tap Ctrl to return to standing straight.

Thats friggin wierd! lol :D
____
Other
Numpad 5 - Forward
numpad 4 - Side left
Numpad 6 - Side right
Numpad 3 - Backwards ( yay wierd aint it? :dozey: )
NumEnter - Alt fire
Numpad 8 - reload
Numpad 7 - Crouch
Numpad 9 - Scores
Num / - Prev weapon
Num * - Next weapon
Num + - Use
Numpad 2 - Voice
NumDel - Walk
NumIns - Drop weapon
Mouse2 - Jump
Mouse4 - Last weap
EDIT: I like these custom settings for all games. Why? Its easier for me because all of the basic commands are parckaged in a sweet block. No stretching your pinky or index finger 5 keys away to reload or something ;)

I've used the arrow keys ever since Doom (I would say Wolfenstien but I never really got into it). Left hand on keyboard, right on mouse. Shift and space for jump, "u" for use, "y"/"t" for chat and teamsay respectively. Odd really, used to use space for jump, despite how awkward it is, but since a friend of mine configured his own games to use "shift" I sort of adopted it myself.
Seriously... so many WASD users... wah... guess I just prefer having my hands closer together.

lol nah i guess it's b/c thats just what im used to :/ thanks guys for so many replying it's cool i started a good poll w00t :D andi inspired someone to make a poll.
I still use arrows...Doom was a classic, and all I needed to play were arrows, and then I just got used to it too much. THe problem is that games today require so many keys that it's hard to bind them around arrow keys. I just use keys like delete, end, page down and numeric keyboard.
Weird thing is that when I play BF1942 I use arrow keys for infantry but for vehicles I always use WASD only.

I haven't touched the arrows for awhile now.

i use the numpad 'cause i like the keys all together, don't like the diagonal setup of the letters - my setup is probably kindof weird to most, but i find it more structured and logical than spreading them out all over the keyboard...these keys are fairly easy to remember and work pretty-much universally for all fps' i've played - exept some which require more keybinds, and i have to us the regular ins, home, pgup, etc...
up - num8
down - num2
left - num4
right - num6
jump - num9
crouch - num3
swim up/leanright - num7
swim down/leanleft - num1
walk - num.
re-load - num+
use - numEnter
lastUsedWeapon - num5
dropWeapon - num0
flashligh - num-

Used to be an arrows man, during the Doom days, but when HL came around, and a lot of newer keys came about (reload, flashlight, needing to hit jump+duck together) i needed to change to a control scheme that i could reach all the buttons easier. So i switched to WASD.
Ever since, i've used WASD. It's so much easier. Then when i go back and try to use the arrows i'm all like, "wtf dood hoW did I use theez ---> keyss bef4?"
The arrow keys are the devil to me now.

WASD works awesomely for me, been using it since Quake(not for original Doom). I laike having acsess to # keys, Tab, Shift, Control, alt, space, ~, etc. One poster suggested RTYG, I might try that and sacrifice my beloved system keys;)

I used to use arrow keys all the time, for Wolfenstein/Doom. Right hand on arrows for movement, left hand does space (opening doors), ctrl (fire), alt (strafe modifier), shift (run); occasionally "z" (duck), "a" (jump); and very rarely [] (inventory). Sometimes insert/delete for look up/down although that wasn't really necessary since the game shot up/down for you if you looked in the right direction. No mouse, as it didn't do anything.
The first time I played through Half-Life, I used left hand on arrows and then had to flop it all the way over to "e" and "f"... very awkward. Since then, I've changed to wasd, but if I go back and play old games again, then I switch back to the right hand on the arrows, left hand for shooting and everything else, since the mouse is functionless. It takes a few minutes to get used to the switching, but it works out alright.
I voted for wsad, but moved one key over to the right (e-forward, d-back, s-strafe left, f-strafe right

Since this is the third time I've submitted answer to a poll containing this question (it's arrows, by the way), it finally struck me:
We really need Valve to release the game soon.
Then we can play our 'Arrows vs. WSAD' mods over Steam.

I use arrows but I would like to make the switch over to WASD because its so much easier but meh......... whatever.
I started with arrows and have kept them the whole time I have been gaming. Everybody I know uses WASD so when I go and play at one of their houses at like a little party its different but I get used to it in like 10 minutes and actually like it better.

You've got 2 fingers to spare on your left side but you can't reach anything since there isn't anything :)
