I've been playing Morrowind for some time now, and I've got to say the sword skill is kind of cack (I use the right character). Who actually uses the sword, or do they just stick to there axes or blunt weapons (Using the Nord or Orc of course)
Died when facing rats with a sword
Killed them after 3 strikes using a hammer
Helpful tip to all those new-comers

I use short swords+ bows. Hit them from long range and then hack them. Short swords are quick and accurate, dont do much damage but thats why you get an enchanted one. I enchanted one of those "evil people" swords (cant remember what they are called) with paralyse and cold damage Its excellent

I like to play as wood elf with the lover sign, it gives you great marksmanship.

I seriously don't see the appeal of RPG stats-based fighting. It sucks immensly
There was some article on gamespy about why its sucks and it gave an example like this
Level 10 Ninja slits the Kings throat.
Oh but the King is level 70, he only took 4 damage.
Level 70 King punches Level 10 Ninja in the face, Ninja takes 200 damage. Ninja dies
THATS why the stats fighting system sucks. Although i've heard good things about Morrowind. Not to mention i loved KOTOR

Morrowind isn't like that...it's more like aptitude with the weapon/armor...you still aim and hold the button for more power etc

Install Morrowind Enhanced + Combat enhanced + block enhanced.
Then turn off "use best attack" in the game options
tap back and fire for thrust
left/right + fire for swing
fire for chop
The higher the level your at, the more combo's you can do then, such as decapitate or sever arm or snap your blade inside them or shockwave etc. If you also add the ACE subtitiles it'll give a msg box when you perform a successful move. Also lets you smash enemies armor aswell as knock weapons out of their hands and grab them to use yourself.
Also have trance mode, which slows the game down via a keypress and lets you plan your moves better. Also if you make enough combo moves you can use Rage mode, which slows the game down but speeds you up and only performs combo moves, so you can take out an entire army of darkness before they know what hit them.
Has options for accidental breakage of your weapon too, annoying when it happens (if you have it turned on) but more realistic.
The fighting in MW depends on your skill. You'll most likely suck with all weapons to begin with, the more you use a particular weapon (long blade, short blade, blunt, spear, axe etc.) the more experience you get with it and the better you become.

Yeah RPG including morrowind suck because you can not test your skill ... it is more like a story you play ... that is why I love good old Quake 3 1v1, its all comes down to my skill vs. another persons skill, there are no excuses you lose it is because the other player is better than you.

In other words you prefer none RPG style because its less realistic, you can pick up a gun, shoot it and have perfect aim the second you start playing?
I prefer Morrowind's approach, which is better than most others. Others such as Baldurs Gate can limit you from even using a particular weapon because of your class ie: Wizard not being able to use a broadsword, barbarian not being able to use a staff.. THATS unrealistic.
Morrowind though sets up base skills depending on your class, then its upto you. If your playing as a wizard but decide you want to fight instead, get a large sword and keep practicing and training with it, eventually you'll be able to weld it as well as a barbarian. Same goes for using a bow or crossbow. Depending on your class you'll either really suck or not be too bad. The more you practice, like IRL, the better you get.
Course its not as simple as that, you've got other skills you'll need to increase, such as strength. A wizard wouldn't be as strong as a barbarian, so wouldn't do as much damage per hit. It's all a rich tapestry which makes it more interesting.

I used to run around with a steel claymore, killing everyone and stealing their pants...
I found that a high amount of agility helps with swords.
Gonna have to get morrowind again now :(

Consolevania's review of morrowind put it better more so than i ever could.
The thing i found with morrowind was that if you played it like a traditional RPG and tried to improve your character the game soon starts to drag. Morrowind's strength was in the game world rather than the gameplay, the various stories, Etc.

attributes are based on race, so if the wizard and barbarian are the same race they will have same strenght etc. however since the attributes have governing skills, it is more likely that that the barbarian will recieve multiplier bonuses to strength(and other combat orientated attributes) and the wizard will recieve multiplier bonuses to Intelligence(and other magica orientated attributes) when they level up... which means that over time each class would most likely exceed in their specific field(asuming they are played out traditionally). there is of course also favoured attributes.
as for the topic starter it all depends on your skill in the use of that particular weapon(rememeber that there are two sword classes "short blade" and "long blade") the material type and the quality of the weapon(how broke it is). also note that your fighting ability is lowered with low stamina(fatigue)
I like Morrowind alot, but its getting dated now, its still fun to play, but there are alot of bugs and alot of unfixxed issues (Like that gamespy example, its abit hard doing a stelath charater, it just does'nt work in morrowind).
I play it now and then, but I never really get over level 30ish before I get tired of it.

Maybe we should just start a Morrowind board here. Everyday either I or someone else is starting a new help thread. :)

WTF? Why does it matter if the weapons reload realistically in Quake 3 ... I do not follow at all ...

No the comlaining was about the lack of skill needed when attacking, I thought, not how realistic the attacking was.
