For me, it would be Max Payne 2's bittersweet ending with that incredibly poignant last spoken line by Max left me emotionally drained. :(

Halo had a fun last level, although the ending was rather obvious. Max Payne 2 did have an awesome ending.

Max Payne 2
"I had a dream about my wife...but it was ok." I love video games that focus on characters rather than hundreds of twists and turns (which the first Max Payne was guilty of, sacrificing any actual character development) I didn't like the alternate ending.
Final Fantasy VIII
I loved the story to this game, and the ending was not a let down. Extremely underrated in my opinion.
Silent Hill 2
I know there are multiple endings, what I mean is the whole few ending bits to the game, especially when you watch the video. My favourite ending is the "In Water" ending, which suits the game and the ending sequences so much. Again, one of my favourite stories in a video game.
Metal Gear Solid
I preferred the one where Meryl died. I don't know why, but I always liked the endings where the main character suffered somewhat, heh. :)
Metal Gear Solid 2
This gets my vote purely for being ~40 minutes long. :D

My favorite ending? COD.
"No cows were harmed in the making of this game."
And the final level was awesome, trying to quickly kill all the enemies so you could get to the top, shooting the ally in front of you so you make it to the top first, etc.

What was this last line in Max Payne 2 that everyone is gushing about? I didn't really find the ending to that game memorable in the slightest.
I think my favorite game ending is probably Fallout 2. It goes through literally every single thing that occured in the game and gives it kind of an epilouge. The cool thing is, depending on what you did, each little epilouge is different. There must be hundred of different possible combinations.

MP 2's final line really brought a sense of closure to Max...he had come to terms with his wife's death...hence it was "alright" (in the original ending)
In the alternate ending (which I won't detail for those who are unaware of it), the line is the same but the emphasis and tone is quite different...it was "ALL RIGHT", meaning he could see a brighter future for himself.

This is why I thought it wasn't as good as the normal ending. What happens is too much of a happy ending for Max. Really, the only way I can see Max getting any sort of complete closure is dying. I wouldn't be suprised if that's the ending of Max Payne 3.

I liked the ending to FFX for one reason:
Tidus was lame/queer if you ask me...and I was glad he disappeared into nothingness...I was upset that Auron was gone too, he was by far the coolest character in the game.
My favorite ending has to be
MGS1 & 2 (a couple of the best stories ever) Although I could've done without the very last twist in the end of 2...it just seemed to be overdone at that point. Everything up until then was just plain amazing.

Actually, the last twist is pretty much crucial to get Hideo Kojima's points across to the player. The first MGS's main theme was how human beings are determined based on biological factors i.e. genes. The second MGS's theme was how human beings are determind by memes, which is a unit of cultural information, or a cultural practise or idea. So the this theme was how society affected how a person could end up being like. Think about this if you ever play through the game again, you'll see how it wasn't just tacked on at the end for the hell of it.
For more information: http://junkerhq.net/MGS2/ This goes to show just how damned intelligent this game really is, as well as Hideo Kojima.
Just a little interesting side note, the theme for MGS3 will apparently be how certain situations, or "scenes", affect who we are.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the last twist in MGS2 was
the fact that the patriots were all dead
why would that be crucial? Personally I thought the story of MGS2 was pretty much bs.
for example, liquid living on through his arm? or something like that wtf was that all about?

Well, it's pretty obvious that MGS has many fantasy elements to it's story. If you could swallow Psycho Mantis or Vamp, I'm sure you should be able to swallow this. :) But otherwise, it's not that big an element to the story anyway, so it could have been left out entirely, which may have been better.

Deus ex- i love the a.i one and blowing the whole place up. And Killing page isnt that bad either. So it wins for having three good endings.
Halo
The REAL thrill was when i finally got to my ride home. The dropship swoops down, evading ships to get to me. and remember this is the only human left alive on halo other than me- the pilot. Just as i started to run tawards it, a feeling of sudden horror washed away my hope. Ships swooped down, blasting away and blew my ride home to smithereens. I watched as the rubble glided fell down like stones to the ground below. But instead of weeping, i clenched my fists and looked up. anger burned in my heart as i decided to take as many creeps as posible with me to the grave-
But whats this? apparantly there is another drophip about 5 minutes away. Looking at the 3 minute timer until halo is blown to smithereens, i clenched my teeth. This is going to be one hell of a ride...
So i grinded the bones of my foes under my warthogs wheels as i glideed over the surface of this giant spaceship. bounding over obstacles and smashing through walls i could feel the time running out of my heart. With only 30 seconds to go, i come across a blockade... only one thing to do now.
with the clock running out of time, i run full speed at the drophip. At first i blasted away the opposing troops, but at i watched that counter get lower i dropped my weapons and made a run for it. As i heard the first signs of the halo ring breaking, i jumped inside the drophip and blasted my way off this hell hole. I had done it. I was a hero.
MGS1
I just loved meryls ending. The pure, saddening effect of the heartbreaking metal gear music with the irony of meryl dying created an unforgettable atmosphere to the final car chase... i just really wanted to blow liquids f*cking head off. Snake really did prove that he's more than a killing machine... great ending.
Final fantasy 7
I loved the way that Aries died at the end of disc one. it made the whole "save the world" thing more personal... and made me really kick sephorioths ass that little bit more. And then in the final battle with sephioth, omnislash looked so damn cool (if you hadnt allready seen it, which i hadnt the first time i completed it).
and the actual final scene was great... the way the lifestream saves the world, but at the cost of hundreds of lives... brilliant.
more to come when i think of them :P

I'm a moron. I read over that really quickly and read, "Contra" not Cortana...I was confused as hell until I came back to the thread reading the newest post.
The end of Halo is really dramatic and I liked it. The ending of FFVII had me worried until Advent Children was announced as a sequel.
My friend and I sorta thought that when they explained Holy, they said that the planet chooses what lives and dies...and that humans might be involved in the destruction of all the unhealthy things for the planet. The reasone we sorta thought this was because after the credits, Midgar was just overrun by plants and vines and such, no living soul seemed to be moving...and they showed Red XIII and his 2 kids (I'm assuming - Also assumed that his race wasn't harmful to the planet to begin with).
Now that they've said Advent Children is a sequel...that's a fear that can be put to rest.

I completley agree, and I also learned a lot of the game going to junkerhq, but I liked the story even before I understood the meme thing.
For me it was like, in the game you had the patriots and they provided nice and clean and easy to understand (and totally rewritten offcourse)info and a lot of people complained that the ending sucked and was messy and incoherent, but those same people clame that they are smart and are for freedom of info and like to think for themselfes, and yet when Hideo gave em an ending that didn't explain everything and you had to think for yourself and he didn't create contex they complained, it just a little bit sad and Ironic to see, but that is what made it so brilliant, i think Hideo actually wanted to see how most of the humans were, and unfortunatly this is what happend. It just shows how immature or ignorant the gaming world still is. If this was a movie or a book it would have been considerd a classic.
Anyways I also liked the ending of Halo and Prince of Persia.

That site does make things more clear. If the game wasn't trying to get an overall point across like that...then I think the game didn't need that twist in.
I like how MGS games have a bit of the supernatural involved. It makes the story seem that much more interesting. It also makes for good boss battles. It's nice to have realism...but when the end boss is realistic (ex. Far Cry's boss dies just like a normal guy) it's no fun. I like the challenge of dealing with special bosses.

Half-Life 1 & 2
Planescape:Torment - if you do the best ending ('best' may not be the right word)
Eternal Darkness - 100% ending was interesting & final boss battle rocked
The Neverhood
Thief 2 - short but great, and better than thief 3 ending (i honestly predicted word-for-word the last part of thief 3's end scene before the game's release)
Monkey Island 2

There was nothing amazing about the ending. The final boss, and the transformation into Ganon: King of Evil, though, was ABSOLUTELY MINDBLOWING and is the best final boss EVER!

That's what i consider as part of the ending though. The final boss, how he dies, and the cutscene afterwards.
If we're talking straight-up endings though...

System Shock 2! Best anti-climax ever award!
Secret of Mana (only game ever to make me cry), no doubt about it.

Probably my favourite game :) - but certainly one of the most disappointing endings (if what happens at the end can even be considered an ending :/ ......... nothing happens. You see the trio travel to a few places while the credits roll down, and that's it)

That game is awesome,
"______honey whats wrong?"
Or something like that.
On the note of dx:iw How many were there I know of
THe one where you do what jc wanted
The one where you kill jc for the templars (where they hang you and billie i think)
The one where you kill everyone (People become those cyborgs eventually)
But where there anyothers I really did not like any of them especially the first

There's also
The one where you do what the illuminati want. I think that involved killing JC too.
Deus Ex was way better than Invisible War anyway. Don't get me wrong, IW was a great game, it was just too actioney and not enough espionage.
And the SS2 anticlimax was
After SHODAN gives you the offer of ruling the universe together, the character just stands there and says "...nah" and blasts her with burning vigor!

Hey that game had a great ending, it made me cry because it was so emotional.
And yes, it is the best game ever thankyouverymuchbye.
Me and my best friend played that game through together and playing through the whole thing and finishing it with two people - especially if it's the first time through - is a wonderful experience.
I remember buying that game back in '96, best £20 I ever spent. I still have the orignal, boxed and with the manual.

Doom III's, The Sands of Time's, Quake II's.
I would've said Far Cry, but my Far Cry was bought from China and it was missing a lot of cutscene content-especially a great portion of the ending.

Quake 2's was awesome. The punching through of the pod. Made me grin.

Final Fantasy 7
That bastard. He killed her. killed her.
he's ruined everything. my life. my love. by hope... am I really just a clone- a copy... of someone so evil?
I will kill him. I'll kill him and relieve myself of his burden. This is it. No turning back. It's time...
Sephorioth, time to face your destiny.
Metal Gear Solid
*sniff*
she... she never did anything to harm anyone...
She only wantled to follow in my footsteps. to become a great soldier like the men she heard stories about.
And i.... I let her down... that BASTARD ocelot, he killed her!
...
...no...It was my fault..... I wasn't strong enough....
I'll make it up to her. I'll live the best life i can...
and then I'll replay the game with a turbo controller, so i can beat that damn torture chamber and get a RED BANDANA! muhahahha!
Damn, that kinda spiled the suspense didn't it?
