I'm running 512 RAM at the moment, and Far Cry only seems to "chug" after loading up for the first time, and whenever the door to a large room opens for the first time. Did this happen to you before you upgraded?

To the topic starter: Take a pic of a live Trigen close up. :P

Yep. When you enter "new" areas, it chugs like that. I went from 512MB to 1GB, namely because of FC, and I'd have to agree, FC absolutely loved the extra RAM.

Also, the game no longer takes 2 minutes to close, it closes instantly :)

**** yeah! I'll be upgrading after my grad party. I don't know how RAM compatability works though. Do I need a stick of the exact same Brand and speed of the one I already have, or will anything work with what I already have. Right now, I have a stick of DDR 512MB PC 3200. Not sure of the Maker, but it came from HP. Do I need to get another stick from HP, or will it be ok to get a stick of Corsair?

So I can get a stick of Corsair 512 PC 3200 and it will be compatible? What is the best stick for gaming? I only want to add the 512.

Well, Corsair is the most expensive, so I assume it's the best. :P

And yeah, it's just the type of memory that it is that matters, not who makes it, when determining compatability.

Nice. I'll start looking some up on newegg tomorrow. Can't wait to get my shiney new RAM in the mail. Also, is low-latency better for gaming? Damn, RAM is the only hardware I don't understand. What's with all this 2-2-2-5 stuff?

The tighter the timings, the better performance.

However, I wouldn't worry about getting RAM with low timings, as I doubt your HP RAM is super top of the line. I'd go with something reasonable, neither too cheap nor too expensive.

Thanks a lot guys. So if I have the correct numbers, my RAM is timed at 3-3-3-8, so If I get something of faster clocking, it won't matter? I'm also not sure if my mobo supports dual channel, but I can tell you that it is ASUS.

I'm pretty sure the timings will adjust to the slower speed, just as RAM speeds do. I could be wrong, as I have no actual experience with that, but eh. I'd really suggest just spending a reasonable amount, and don't aim for really expensive RAM, get something with similar timings.

Wow, tech help in the general gaming fourm... ;)

It sounds like you have a HP computer. So I doubt that they put quality RAM in your computer. Anyways, to find out if you motherboard is dual channel capable I need to know the model number of your motherboard. To find that, go to start, run and type "dxdiag." It should list your motherboard model. Listing your system specs would be helpful to.

As for RAM timings, the motherboard will automatically change its timings to make both RAM sticks happy. That means if you buy a stick of 2-2-2-5 RAM, it will actually run at 3-3-3-8 which would be a gigantic waste of money. Try and find a stick of RAM that is close (if not the same) CAS timings.

If you bought your computer through HP, I would see what they are charging for another 512 RAM. If their prices are competitive to newegg.com, I would go with whatever HP is trying to sell you (since you know it is compatable, etc). If HP prices are not competitive, go to your motherboards website and see what RAM is compatible with your motherboard. Then go to newegg.com, find the RAM and purchase it.

Its not a crappy processor, but not best you can get. Im hanging on to it until the PCIe platforms have matured a bit.

Its an AMD2.6XP oc'ed @ 2.2ghz (so basically its an AMDXP 3200+)

The game is very much playable at the settings im running it on them screens (6xAF/16xAA)...but i use 4xAF 8xAA normally so it is very playable, even if i used 1600x1200 ress.

Edit/ I know my cpu bottlenecks it but the X800 is still a beast of a gfx card capable of playing any game at highest settings highest AA/AF settings (well, optimized engines)

at that resolution, the edges are so sharp you dont need 6xAA . :naughty:

lower resolutions and higher AA settings work much nicer I think. blends stuff together better.

and isnt so harsh on the eyes :O,, and you get a better frame rate.. but I guarantee that 16x AF is whats sucking the frame rate down.

300flyby
105 botmatch
1024x780 ress on ut2004 retail benchmark

_using a 9800XT_ obviously overclocked somewhat

Though his cpu is something like 4.4ghz @ like -20c and his machine is ****ing beasty (was rank 3 in the world on 3Dmark2003) but still...i expected at least 80 in botmatch even with my cpu because the X800pro doubles the 9800XT almost and is still one hell of an improvement over it even if the 9800XT is overclocked to gods end.
