View Full Version : Far Cry Mod Makers on "Strike"

Well, I was browsing the Far Cry forum to find any new info on the status on the sdk (gotta stay updated on these things), and it seems that mod makers are now going on "strike." In my opinion that's one of the dumbest thing ever to do. It just shows how impatient they are, and they even think 3 months is a long time. They also claim that they can't do any more work on their mod which is complete BS. They could be modelling, texturing, animating, heck they even have the map editor to map with. What's your opinion on this? BTW I think boycott is a better word for what they're doing, but you can take that up with the original poster on the Far Cry forums.

LMAO.. what a waste of time.
The majority of HL2 mods have so much work done pre-SDK.

Funny thing is... alot of hl2 mods changed to Farcry just so they could start modding... too bad the SDK isnt out yet.
They need to get the facts right before they move.

Poetic justice. :)
Wow how pointless, do they realize they are lucky to even be getting an sdk? that is a previlage! alot of fantastic mods are created without imporort / modeling or mapping support! Pathetic.

They had them right, at least when they moved across.

What a completly useless idea. All it will do is delay their mods and get people fustrated. Tons of companies dont even release their sdks and great mods are still created on them.

I was looking for the SDK when almost every HL2 moved... the only thing i could find about it was that it wasnt released yet.

The only fantastic mod without a sdk is Desert Combat on the BF1942 engine. Other than that, most every game has an sdk out.

Yeah, I don't really see what the point was when they moved. Both SDKs weren't out and Half-Life 2 has a huge fanbase compared to Far Cry. Steam averages 1,271,059 unique players each month on steam, and I'm almost positive Far Cry is no where near that.

And forgotten hope...
And desert combat extended.
And a fair few others for the BF1942 engine. :)

Seconded for emphasis!
In all fairness, the lack of SDK is the backbone and a bottleneck of development. But still, who are they to complain. :burp:

Yeah but I wouldn't really count all of those Steam users as a part of Half-Life 2's fanbase, most are CS players who couldn't care less about Half-Life or it's sequel.

They're still going to want CS:Source and CS2. And if it's anything like HL1 a mod for HL2 will also work on all other Source products. So the community will be much larger.
Most likely we will have one mod community for TF2, HL2, CS, DOD, everything. That basically opens it up for a humongous community and possibility for modding, even more than HL1 (because there weren't many other products besides HL).

Some better questions are:
People actually bought Far Cry?
or
People still play Far Cry?

Reading into this I found that Ubi deleted the mod team's sites link's from the site. This irritates me and leads me to think they are ignorant. The impatience is silly. But also the fact that Farcry has recieved almost no attention.. even communication with the community wise.. it all just seems wrong. The game wont go anwhere at this point.

Why would they link a site that's trying to boycott their game?

Probably don't want it to spread to other mods/sites. Wow that's sad when their own community doesn't approve of what they're doing. Although it's extremely immature to shut down a site because of impatience, it does send a message to ubi.

They didn't shut down the site. Ubi removed the link to the fan site from Ubi's site. Just a link, nothing more.

well.. these pple thought HL2 was taking too long so they decided to switch over to Far Cry for modding as mentioned... and smiliar things are happening..
im not sure i would call that "happy" more like snickering at some pple's impatience.

So you're feeling revengeful, because since Valve hasn't released HL2 yet, that these modders have moved onto Far Cry ?
I would do the same if I was a modder, with HL2 two months away, and Far Cry's ripe for the picking, hell, I'd go for it !

sure...but the fact remains that the SDK for Far Cry hasn't been released..hence the "poetic justice" statement..

Problem is, people *STILL* can't mod FarCry, since Crytek has yet to release the SDK. Furthermore, they still haven't released patch 1.2 for FC, and if the scope of the patch is as small as last reported, I can't, for the life of me, see why it's taking them this many months to release a patch. Nevermind the SDK..
real mods will be for hl2 -snicker-
add: about the future patch.. is that they cant release there sdk because it could reveal further that they used illegal software.. and maybe the FC engine.. ising as much "cry" technology as it is.. stolen.. It is a tin foil hat conspiracy.. but remember when legal action was being taken aginst cryteK? well what if the game uses stolen tech. They have to be SUPER carefull with any patches or sdk's to not hurt this case. or worse reveal all the way that stolen software or code is blatantly stuck into some part of farcry. they blame it on "bugs" This my friends.. dosnt take any analsis.. it's bullsh!t

Far Crying out loud they are stupid. ouch that was REALLY bad.
I have one word though to say about this terrible event in gaming history.
Tragic.*
*May or may not actually be tragic (but probably isnt).
I've said it time and time again, Crytek doesn't care about the community any more than they do about good multiplayer. I remember the fun discussions in the beta forums we used to have where we posted and posted about the bugs and the bad things in their multiplayer and they refused to listen. That's how you get sub-par multiplayer my friends. I really didn't expect much from these people after that and I chose not to buy their game because of it too, bad move Crytek.
Also it's worth mentioning that its not a true SKD, they do not use C++ or anything of the sorts, they use a basic scripting language aming the likes of what is used for BF1942 so those people who expect to make real TC's are grasping at straws.

Well that sucks incredibly.
**** crytek. These mod makers should move to a different engine.
Honestly, I agree with Rico.. I think Crytek has shown extreme ignorance. They boast and brag but turn a cold shoulder to the community. They know they are head to head with companies like Valve, Epic and ID yet they do nothing to try to match the kind of support you see for games released by one of the following developers.

wow...
after reading some of these posts... i am so glad i did not waste my money on Far Cry.
im already limited as far as extra spending money goes...and (i thought of getting the game) it sounds like getting this game is more than likely a waste of my money more than anything.
babyheadcrab, is that stolen code part true?
wow...i have to say now those modders that switched from HL2 to FC look even dumber than before.. :|

not stolen code.. but they were investigated on multiple occsions for using "stolen" software.. try googling it "crytek legal trouble" or somthing. It is very disturbing indeed.

i did hear about it...but since nothing came of it.. (or so i thought) it didn't sound like there was anything serious to the allegations.
hmm...bah.
if they are using stolen software, i hope they get caught :flame:
it's all just very murky.. But Ubisoft's statement makes me think it's just nothing.. so I doubt it's really a huge deal. But crytek should at least release a hotfix or somthing.. make it mp fun to play and please the community.
