The topic subject basically says it all: what is the system specifications of the computer on which you are planning to play Half-Life 2 on?

Mine is a shabby 2.53 GHz P4
Radeon9700Pro w/ 512 RAM

Infinity I dont think AF would run, you might want to sacrifice some picture quality for a better frame rate.

MIWojo11
17-07-2003, 06:59 AM
I dont see how you cant have best quality with best frame rates with a system like that. Im not computer smart but jeez!

but your system will be fine MIWojo11, dont worry.. you can run the graphics close to max (close enough that it shouldnt matter)

You have a Radeon 9800Pro. You're fine. Don't worry. :) It's us 9700ers that should be worrying about stuff like that. :)

I'll be running it on an AMD Athlon 1.3 Ghz with 512MB Ram and a ATI Radeon 8000 series.

Upgrading from 256MB ram and GeForce 2 Ultra.

That's the best I can do on my budget. Even that is pushing it.

Go with the RAM, it will load more of the game into a faster memory type, that would solve the slow hard drive issue, and it might give you better FPS.

Yeah Jason, wait. Seriously, upgrading to something such as that is not worth it. Save your money for an extra few months and buy a GeForce FX, the 5200 is loads better than the one you have and something like 70 bucks at newegg. The GeForce 2 is really not worth purchasing these days when cards 10x better are around the same price.

P IV 1.7@2.1
512 MB DDR

MSI GF 4 Ti 42000

In an attack of insanity I decied to buy GF 5600 Ultra or Radeon 9600 Pro. I'm not crazy/stupid enough to spend one month worth of living on a Graphics card.

I hope to get the game moderatley smooth (30-40 fps) on 1024*768 (my monitor is 15", won't handle higher res anyway).

According to MaxPC article a minimum sensible setup would be round 2 Ghz CPU with DX 8 card. Below that you can have a problem...

Well atm I've only got:

1333GHz Athlon
Gf2 MX
512 MB SDRAM

Really have to update my graphics card but I've got no money right now. Its my birthday soon after HL2 is planned to come out. So maybe I'll have enough money for a small upgrade. What do you think I should upgrade the most? I know I need to get both faster cpu and gfx. But my mobo will only go upto the xp2400 because of the fsb and graphics cards are way overpriced these days. :(

Juven, you NEED to upgrade both... you really can't do one without the other at this point. But I would do graphics card first, you'll see a bigger improvement in the games but your CPU will then become your bottleneck and hold back the rest of the system.

I have:

AMD Athlon XP 2000+
512MB DDR
GeForce 4 Ti 4400 128MB
Soundblaster Audigy 2
100 GIG 7200 RPM HD
21 " HP CRT monitor
Logitech MX 500 Optical

I plan on selling the above system around September 15th

I'm going to build a completly new system but since all the new processors, motherboard and video cards are coming out in September I'm not sure if I'm even going with a AMD or Intel yet... to early to tell... I asked gabe about processors and he said I should get a P4 and not worry about the Atlon 64 chips... I'm not sure though... I guess I'll have to wait and see, either way I'l be spending about $2,200 USD and buying it in peices, only the best brand components, so it will be a fast system.

yeah I guessed there would be a bottleneck. I understand I have to upgrade both. Ahh poo I'm gonna have to find some money from somewhere. I've been meaning to upgrade for ages but I just haven't got the money all the time.

I think I read somewhere AMD are gonna have a kinda budget barton that runs on 266fsb in a socket A mobo. That would be nice but I'm not sure I'm right about that

Amd Barton 2500+ (1.83 ghz o/c'd to 2.0 ghz), Geforce 4 Ti 4680, 1ghz PC 2700 DDR Ram, and an Epox 8rda+ mobo....

Amd Athlon 1700+ (1.47 ghz), Geforce 4 Ti 4200, 512 megs PC 2100 DDR ram, and same mobo....

550 Mhz Amd , Geforce 3 Ti 200, 512 megs PC133 ram, and some old mobo.. system is tweaked for gaming.. games like RavenShield, UT2003 and Vice City work great on it in 800x600 with 2x AA and low detail, so HL2 should work respectible...

..and a 486 with onboard video and sound, might not run HL2, but it runs minesweeper pretty damn good!!
