View Full Version : Has HL2 been hyped too much?

Now that we've seen two 20-minute videos about the upcoming ascension of 3d-shooters, thousands of pics and articles, we can ask ourselves: have we seen too much already. We are aware of the weapons, etc. I am just afraid that Valve has revealed too much of its game. But can we trust that the storyline could compensate this? :(
Opinions, please.

No, the game isn't hyped too much imo. Or if it's hyped then we the community are responsible =) .

I dunno about you, but I haven't seen thousands of pics or articles, or both combined..
Besides, VALVe have clearly shown VERY little. I'm sure we're to see atleast a half dozen more weapons (hopefully more), and TONS of more levels. Not to mention, we haven't seen a TON in terms of storyline.
It'll still be special, and good, and.. and..

Despite the fact that we have disscussed this many times before, I'll dip in. It seems like we have really only seen some of the introductory levels, and maybe a little further into the game. If I try to imagine all of the things I have seen about HL2, and compare that to how much there was in HL1, I can't even start to piece together the events that will take place. I think Valve has done a good job of moderating how much media they have fed us, and I'm glad for that :D

I just think Valve is not showing the right things

We've only seen about two fifths of the enemies in the game.
It's not that they're overhyping, it's just that they have proportionally more stuff to hype. 5% of HL2 beats 5% of many other games for sheer variety and size.

Hell no it hasn't been hyped to much! We barely know anything about the story, we've just seen enemies, weapons, and a few locations. They've kept a lot secretive, and I really don't get how one second everyone is begging for more and then a few weeks later, you wonder if they are giving away to much... Mixed up world we all live in I guess but hey who cares right :D
Neo_Kuja
17-06-2004, 10:02 AM
Nope, we've seen very little compared to other up-coming games so far .....
If you think about it, without any hype , we're actually more interested in getting it because of the things we don't know.

Due to the fact that Valve have said SFA in between E3's I wouldn't say this game has been hyped at all. Valve's silence and lack of content release, SS and the like gives me the impression that they don't want to hype the game at all.
I wish I had a job in marketing at Valve, be the easiest job in the world.

Wait, there's a difference between Valve hyping the game and community hype. When I hear the question "has HL2 been hyped" the first thing that jumps in my head is "absofrigginlutely!"
This is, hands down, the most anticipated PC game EVER, possibly even the most anticipated video game, EVER. I've seen thread upon thread, just on this site, about "what will you do when hl2 is released?", "how will you play it?, "how will you install it?, "what will the manual smell like?"
Conversely, consider the community's reactions when people try to compare the game to Doom3/STALKER/Far Cry/whatever or the unholiest of the unholy - tried talking about the dreaded "leaked beta." It's been overwhelmingly fanatic. People are NUTS over this game, and I'm one of 'em.
If this isn't hype, then the word has no meaning.
:afro: :bounce: :afro: <---- the new symbol for HL2 Hype.
Not overhyped, just over anticipated by it's fan base - which is not really surprising as it's had more false endings than lord of the rings.

I don't think HL2 is the most anticipated video game ever. Maybe for PC, but not for video games in general. Sadly, a lot of people I know are more into Halo 2. :(

Halo sucks.
HL2 is looking very good. I don't think HL2 has been hyped too much at all. It seems to me like everyone's seen the same amount of it in all the BINKs and E3vids. I really think Valve has chosen to release a good amount of information about it because we have some little things to talk about and speculate, but we don't know anything really. Just some characters and guns.
I remember MaxPayne2, too much videos were released from that game and being such a short game you basically got the whole game by just watching the vids.
Roll on HL2.

With Halo 2, Doom 3, Fable, and HL2 all coming out 2004 is a mark of a big change in gaming, so no, it was not hyped too much since we will prolly remember HL2 as one of the big things in gaming. Halo I believe is a good game but not even CLOSE to the amount of hype around HL2.

So true, Halo has has little upgrades from the original and more of an arcade-style feel to it, which gets rid of most of it's potential. Half-Life 2 on the other hand, has recieved a GIGANTIC (literally) list of upgrades from the original without sacrificing gameplay.

Don't forget, Greg Coomer even said there's still either a few or a lot of things we don't know about the engine itself feature-wise. He said there's still "surprises" :D
so dont think just because we know how much we know, that we know everything about the engine or the game, because we sure as hell dont.;)

I like surprises :)
I am always careful not to look to deeply into a game, otherwise I feel empty when I play it.

The hype that's been built up about HL2 has, no doubt, spurred Valve on to live up to the expectations - they have to deliver on all their promises. I think that's quite a good thing.

17-06-2004, 05:05 PM
I don't think Hl2 have been overhyped at all, at least not by Valve.
I agree that they have to market their game to a small extent to let everybody know that it exists... like the 2 e3 videos (and the hi res video from them) say a lot for the game and some various screenshots is all that we really have. Unless you count the info. e-mails from the developers as "hype"
And besides, even if valve just said "Half life 2 is in the works" with no videos or anything, the community would hype it just by that because its just the sequel to the gigantic hit the first one was...
i think valve are handling it quite well, and they are better off not showing us more parts of the game so it won't be ruined when we all get to play it :-D

We won't know until it is released.

I don't think it's been overhyped. We know the game will be roughly as long as the original so what we've seen in videos is a very very minute portion of game play. And all of the screen shots and articles which have come out in the last year don't really same much more than the first screen shots and articles when the game was first announced. Plus, we still don't even know what the MP aspect is.
I DO think one reason it tends to "feel" overhyped is because of all of the publicity after everything that has happened. The stolen build getting spread around; the poor PR and bad release date info etc.
But don't forget one of the main complaints has been: Lack of new information. That to me doesn't sound overhyped.
As many have said, though, we won't truly know until the game is released and then we can compare then and now to what has been hyped.

Over-hyped...Yes, but you'd expect that from one of the greatest games of all time's sequal. Just look at some of the most hyped games out there. They are mostly sequals of awesome games. Halo 2, DOOM 3, Unreal...etc...
I don't give into the hype alot, but I do think Half-Life 2 will live to all of, or most of it's hype. Hyping games could sometimes be a good thing.

What isn't over-hyped? Team Fortress 2: Brotherhoods of Arms. Wait until that comes out as the multiplayer or released later on, it's going to be a huge suprise and it'll be up there with counter-strike if not surpassing it.

ScopeD: Plz edit your sig :)
I believe we've seen too much movies. If you combine the two E3 movies then we've seen around 50 minutes. And how is the game supposed to be? 12+ hours? Or was it closer to 20? I don't know. Either way, if you compare the figures, I think 50 minutes compared to 12 hours sounds like an awful lot. Yes I know noone's forcing me to watch them but still :)

Welcome Tiddalick. I'm an Aussie and just wondering where you preordered the Collector's Edition for $155AUD?
Well EB Games has the collectors Edition for Sale (only one that I know of)
I had two options:
Wait for the game to come here, possibly the collectors as well
Preorder from the only spot that has it listed just in case they make it a limited number.
I took the safer (though much more expensive option) of preordering it.
The price is broken down as such:
Game: 79.99 US
Shipping 29.99 US (only choice from EB)
Thats about 109 US Dollars.
At the Current exchange rate of about 70 cents (Dumb undervalued currency)
That brings it to 155 AUD!

I thought I heard it was closer to something around Ownzed estimation. 12 hours is a relatively short game, something close to Max Payne 2.
I hope that it doesn't become a Deus Ex 2, I was hyped for that last year. It was all famous and stuff in last year's E3 and boy it turned out to be crap - at least in comparison to it's predecessor.

yeah i hope so too :)
alot is made of the auto weapons and such and not much attention is given to alien weapons, granted we don't know much on the alien weapons side.. but still.. i find pple over-looked the alien weapons in HL1 and it might happen again with HL2.. :|
plus personally... every time i see a screen shot or read something about HL2, i take it with a grain of salt.. so the game really for me hasn't been over hyped.

Thanks for the info Tiddalick. I can't believe EB charge US$30 for shipping. I presume that is priority courier. At least you will get the game probably before it hits the shelves here (I have written to Valve asking about a worldwide simultaneous release, no reply). I have heard that the worldwide release is most probably just through Steam, so I will probably buy it through Steam, Valve can have all my money!

You'll only be able to say it was too hyped based off your experience after actually playing the game.
If expectations are not met or exceeded people will claim it was too hyped. Personally i can't remember a game that's had this kind of marketing. The audio/visual quality of the BINK videos are the best i've ever seen for a computer game. The level of hype Valve have generated from those videos alone is astounding. Not many developers would dare to release such high quality footage of their game as it gives the potential player the greatest feel for how it plays (aside from giving them a demo, possibly spoiling the final product.
