Hey people, long time reader, first time poster....you know how it is.
Was just thinking last night about the state these forums will be in, when hl2 is finally released. The moderators have problems enough as it is, with duplicate posts all over the place. So what are they going to do when it hits the shelves...
good luck to them, thats what i say, and duck and cover... :E

I still think they should implement some tags to give people a good way to block sensitive information.
A spoiler tag creates a black box around the text and you can only read it when you select it.

I don't think these forums will die. They have far too many members. And quite alot of regulars.
Once HL2 comes out these forums will be buzzing with questions on how to get it running with all the best possible gfx. How to get past a point in the game. There will be people saying how great the game is. And most likely some that don't like it :O. There will be the modders asking how to do stuff on the editing forum. There will be the modders showcasing their work on the mod forum.
I just don't think a community like this will ever cease. :)

It's being compiled, for those who don't know, I lost the stuff while fixing my computer, so I'm having to do it again.. I had to get the thread from an older version of the DB, the homeLAN one :/
But stay tuned :D

Yeah, we'll hopefully be using something like that closer to the time, but there's still always idiots that will post spoilers without any warning. I'm going to have to try and rush through the game myself to prevent me from seeing any spoilers that we clean up on the forum :hmph:

Maybe just create a big Spoilers/Post game experience thread and make sure it is clearly labelled as such. That way everyone with a brain can post/discuss the intricacies of rocketlauncher surgery on headcrabs in it, and any nobrainer posts in the other forums can simply be moved there also. If any smart alec starts polluting other peoples threads with spoilers/pics outside of the spoiler forum, just perm ban them and delete their posts if they continue after the first warning.

Another idea is a spoiler forum :)
Where people can chat about the game, and avoid spoiling it for those who haven't completed it.

But if you could see the thread where the last was (lk it is now) you can see spoilers anyway - For example: a thread named - So if the Combines are (whatever) then the G-man is (whatever)?
Could spoil anyway

I think we'll be pushing munro for both spoiler tags and a spoiler forum ... and anyone who doesnt use them gets to clean the staff loo's!

You could add a button next to the "reply" and "quick reply" buttons under each users post , that would be called "report spoiler" ... If you press it a note would be send to the moderators about who blocked it and the spoilerdudes post instantly turns into some **********-mumbo jumbo... And since the note to mod contains the spoilerdudes post and the username of the reporter, you can ban those who misuse the function , i.e the nonserious kiddos..

As soon as the full warez version hit's the scene I'm out of here, no way you can trust the cock jockys who download it not to post spoilers. They will do it just to show off that they have played the game already.

Not enough bandwidth to cope with the flood....the deluge of fans flocking to the fun and atmosphere of this release. It's going to be intense.

What might be a good idea is for the mods to post a sticky stating that ANY AND ALL forum members who post spilers (regardless of the length of time they've been here) will be banned/deleted with no warning :sniper:. It won't stop ppl from posting, but at least the punishment has been clearly stated before hand. No whiners.
As for the site going quiet once HL2 is out I think it'll still be busy, will lots of ppl posting "I've got teh game! W00t!"

Re-do it so that it doesn't exceed the 4 line limit, I've taken the fifth line off for now.

This is JMO, but maybe shutting the forums down for a week or two so everyone can play it without rushing ^^^. This way everyone will have a chance to finish the game and not have to worry about reading spoilers. Of course you could still add a feature or mod the forums after the two weeks for those people who haven't bought or finished the game.

I was thinking the same, but I dunno, shutting down the site could lose some temporary fanbase... worth the risk? I'm sure that the staff will congregate alot of ideas for when the situation arises.

I really feel sorry for the mods who have to clean op spoilers, before they can determine if it's a spoiler, they need to read it. :(
My idea:
- Disable thread creation by users
- Mods create several general topics about stuff like troubleshooting, game experiences, performance, modding etc etc
- Threads close down after 150 posts in it, so it won't get a big mess with 200 page threads. Mods can then create xxx - Part 2 threads
- Allow users creating threads in only one forum (for example Thread Idea's), to bring idea's for more general topics that the mods forgot about.
- Just an idea, but you could reverse reading order, so the newest posts in a thread are on top, so you read the reactions to the spoiler before you read the spoiler and then you can avoid it. Maybe a little extreme this one ;)

yup, that would be great for the users that follow the rules.. but im sure we will have those types. (morons is what their called around these parts) that intentionally want to ruin other pples HL2 experience..
anyway, u staff guys are good at coming up with such solutions, so im not terribly worried :)
