Should I d-load the Far Cry Demo and expect HL2 to be just like it?

...the games are nothing alike. Yes, they're both DX9, yes they both feature Havok physics (although, HL2's are revamped), and yes, they're both FPS games. Don't expect them to be just like eachother, they're completely different games.

HL2 goes for a more photorealistic, gritty type of world where you fight aliens (presumeably), while FarCry features brightly lit outdoorsy jungle environments while fighting humans (atleast in the demo).

However I doubt that you should compare it to HL2 since they are rather
different (from what I can tell by the Far cry demo and HL2 movies and info).

i like the demo.. its fun.. if i had extra cash right now, i'd get the game.. but seeing as i need to choose wisely which games i get, i think i'll save for HL2 and Doom3.. :)

well lets start with getting stuck inside rocks/bushes/characters.

1. 5 times now ive been playing and my controls have just died, the game still runs but the enemy stand their and shoot but its like godmode, only a exit and reload fix this.

2. the joke that is far cry's vehicles, worse control than Bf's higgins landing boat.

3. the fact that enemies fail to become visible beyond a certian distance, stand at the 2nd enemy camp and look at the beach with just normal view, you dont see anybody, then use your binocs you still dont see anybody, zoom in a few times then out of nowhere theres a dozen guys just standing their.

4. the Ai, wow i didnt know that hurling grenades at their own teammates was a good concept for them, or that they are death and have poor eyesight.

5. bodies that vanish after death, i hate that with a passion.

meh. its probably too soon for me to judge the entire game on 1 shoddy demo.

I pretty much agree completely with Dougy on this.. I was very dissapointed in it

To add to Dougy's list, some visual things I noticed

1) water jitters badly when moving sideways

2) tree's and larger details 'pop' into view instead of fade or Stalker style grow. Not the case with the smaller plants, grass and such, but the larger stuff

3) Whats with the dropping dead if you try go another way around. Whats happened to this huge map its supposed to have when you still can't go where you like, its still, regardless of what they've said on the rails so to speak. Bit pointless having such a big map in that case. Since you can't go where you want when you want why not just have smaller maps, use 3dskyboxes and put more effort into making whats on screen and accessable look and work better

4) Animations unrealistic. Environment unrealistic. NPC's suddenly becoming black where there's no shadow and close enough to see them clearly. Errors with textures at a distance. Audio errors

Granted _some_ of it might be just cause its still pretty much in beta (or alpha by the looks of it) But overall it just wasn't very good. At no time can I honestly say I enjoyed it. Sorry all you farcry fans :(

Well, the only thing I noticed as your complaints were the LOD "popping," that sucks.

I never had any control issues, that sounds weird.. I've played the demo for about 2 hours total, too.
Bodies hardly ever vanished for me, but they did vanish after a certain amount of time, which does suck.

I didn't have that problem with the viewing of enemies at a distance (although, objects is another thing), though. Also, the AI is alot better on hard, I hadn't tried it on anything else, so I didn't see them throwing grenades at eachother.

A Demo is unfortunatley 90% of the time basicly wat the game will be like.

very few companies change anything becuase of a demo. and i think farcry is only a month away, wich leaves very little time to change anything if they want to release on time.

Well, I just finished playing the Far Cry demo for about 45 minutes or so and I just have to say... I think that's all the Far Cry I ever want to play. I haven't been following the game's development very closely, but I know it's been being talked up quite a bit. One of the "next gen" shooters, they say. Hmph. Maybe I'm missing something, but I just don't see it. Graphics are nice, sure. They have to be, or a game would get laughed right off the shelf these days. Nothing that impressive, though. On par with Halo, I'd say. Controls aren't so smooth (driving the boats is downright frustrating). Your guns seem horribly inaccurate, while the enemy pops you three times from 200 yards and you drop. Ragdoll physics are in, of course (they have to be, again, or the game would get laughed off the shelf, right?), but again nothing spectacular. I still managed to have a guy come to rest in an awkward looking position humping a tree. Explosion effects are pathetic. I ran into some clipping issues, and an invulnerable soldier manning a PT boat who was apparently oblivious to my attempts to cap him. After being called a "mofo" about 34 times in 45 minutes, I got bored and quit. Again, maybe I missed something, and I'm sure this game will grab some people, but not me. Guess I'll go back into HL2 hibernation... :)

It's a fantastic demo, some great AI and the gfx is stunning as well as the sound

The boats are piss easy to drive and the guns are good too. both hl2 and farcry are totally different styles of game but the same genre yes, this however does not mean they can be compared.

Far Cry is the best demo ive played so far I must say.

It is also freeform and the AI adaptive. one will always send another to call for backup, fire at one from the bushes and the rest will fire blind in all directions, steal their boat and use onboard gun to mow them down or cap them off one by one. it really is fun

The rocket lancher and sniper rifle scopes have real time reflections which also rock. I aint sure if hl2 can beat far cry. I liked demo alot. Vehicles owned. It reminded me of halo except better.

i thought the demo was great...if you guys give it more time i think you'll agree...you can go about doing things your own way your not stuck in a corridor with 2 gaurds in front of you and that being the only way to kill the enemy....once i picked off the two gaurds on the first island with my pistol...gunned down by other two heavily armed gaurds...so next time i snuck under the cabana and shot them from a hole in the boards....then snuck around and killed the other two gaurds...but they had alerted the gaurds further down and they killed me....then i tried sneaking unerneath the cabana, sneaking into the cabana from a out of view place....after throwing a well placed rock to divert attention....found a machine gun and a grenade and dispatched the gaurds quickly. then i blew up the communications just in case....from there i had two choices...steal the boat and gun the men down further down the island or fire on them from a window...getting them closer then dispatching them

thats just a small example of the different ways you can go about things...the replayability looks to be damn good. i honestly think this game is great and i wonder what the people bitching about it have against it.

I think the demo is fantastic. There are still a few graphical glitches, but the gameplay is awesome. Rambo-style approach won't do it, you'll have to sneak, hide in the jungle (never seen a graphics engine that draws so many details and runs at smooth 40-60fps)..etc.. And there is no game interruption (like in almost every other fps where only a part of the level is loaded into memory), the level design is perfect (interiors look fantastic, too) and DX9 effects are well implemented. I will definitely buy this game and I can recommend it to everyone who has a little patience and doesn't get pissed of by how easy you die in this game :-)

way better than HALO, and if u cant drive the boat than you cant drive the vehicles in hl2, they both drive the same.....to be honest, after playing hl2, farcry and stalker, HL2 just isnt that impressive no more...but than again none of these games are finished. by the time hl2 comes out, there will be games better or just as good.

The boat's handling is very realistic, I own a rubber dinghy myself and I can safely that the boat physics are alright. I haven't tried the beta of HL2, so I can't compare the two, but if HL2 intends to have realistic physics (which it will most certainly have), then the handling will be similar.

again, you went in expecting a average FPS and ghot exactly that without looking deeper.

The graphics are gorgeous, the AI is generally solid but does go bonkers on occasion such as when I threw a gren into a group of guys, none of them died but it must of shook them up as they started firing randomly killing each other.

The Vehicles feel pretty good I particularly liked the change in feel from the powered dinghy to the speed boat also the enemy seem to use their vehicles effectively with the patrol boat bringing reinforcements and the attack helicopters working well together, although the jeep felt kinda, well boingy?

Wow the rocket launcher is groooovy. Try getting a tail hit on the chopper from underneath, flips it right up tipping the gunner out. Note to developers - this is how you do a demo right.

There is more too and the demo isn't optimised fully yet either

if the multiplayer has lots of vehicles and mounted weapons and nice maps, it should be pretty fun...watching a rocket just goooo for like 10-15 seconds before it his is pretty sweet...

Your mission is to blow up a radio tower with some C4. The demo lasts anywhere from 30 minutes to forever :) lol, well, there's probably about 30-40 NPCs total in the demo, all which are enemies. There are a few vehicles to mess around with, and alot of fun to be had.

yeah theres fun to be had with the vehicles and what not, but i dont like the fact that you have a whole island there and you can only explore certain parts of it, but if you go of course just a little bit you get shot by helicopters. The demo's fun but i gotta admit it just feels like every other action-shooter game i've played but just with a few extra gimmicks in it. Still a fun game but nothing new really. I can't remember who said it was the best demo they've ever played but as soon as i got into the game and started playing it i was like "this is awesome, its fun as" then after about 10 minutes it wore off and it just felt like every other game out there. Anyway im gonna go play the demo now
