By what definition must art be non-sexual for it to truly be art? I say it's pretty restricting to claim that all pictures portraying blatantly sexual subjects are limited to the realms of pornography. For example, Japanese wood block paintings (ukiyo-e) from the Edo period had a special genre called shunga; these painting were not regarded as offensive and really had no stigma about them. They weren't just reserved for the lower classes, either, and most ukiyo-e artists created some kind of shunga at some point.

I'm a fan of Edo period aesthetics, and I think that shunga is particularly interesting for its subject matter. Don't click the spoiler unless you are prepared for Japan.
