Got a pretty decent deal from Wal-Mart.com for an 80gb bundle. The PS3 + $50 gift card, 1 game *Burnout Paradise*, 4 movies of which I can remember getting Hellboy *Since i've never seen it*, Hancock, Fifth Element and I think Kung Fu Hussle. it also only comes with one controller as it has the "Blu-Ray Remote". All for $488. *With the gift card it's 438 I guess...*
So....anybody that has one want to be my bitch, as a little tiny box with internet and things scares me. I don't know what I just got myself into :p
*EDIT* I'll keep a list of PSNs so I don't lose/forget em....

Game doesn't look all too interesting to me. Also, the PC will be the main gaming platform for me, as there is no way I could replace it. And STFU about buying a 360.
I'll mainly use the PS3 for RockBand *since I already have it for the PS2* and since I"m on that road, I can get some FF13 and some other games I never considered cause I didn't think I'd be in this situation.

Also, for bang for the buck, grab a bunch of the PSN titles. They are incredible and better than much of the full priced stuff out there for any system. I just hate having to wait for Fat Princess!!!

Welcome to the wonderful world of PS3. You will find that you'll be incessantly criticized by Xbox 360 owners who repeat the same 2 year old console comparison facts in an attempt to make you feel remorse over your purchase. That aside, there are a lot of great past and future exclusives and multiplats. Not sure what type of games you're into (other than the obvious HL and SC), but here are what I recommend as a good starting point for your collection:
Condemned 2
Metal Gear Solid 4
Ratchet and Clank Future
Uncharted
Valkyria Chronicles
Blackthorn
27-01-2009, 06:26 PM
All the above, plus (from the PSN), in order of importance:
Wipeout HD
Super Stardust HD
Pixeljunk Monsters
Pixeljunk Eden
Flow
These little gems of titles on the PSN are what make me appreciate the PS3 so much. I spend more time playing the above than any full length title.
Edit: As for LBP, if you regularly play games with others, BUY THIS GAME. I don't care if you don't like the look of it, or it isn't usually your type of game, there are few things in life more enjoyable than playing LBP with a friend. However, I never, ever play it without company. Something about playing LBP is ridiculously depressing.
CyberPitz
27-01-2009, 06:42 PM
The problem with playing with friends is it will have to be over PSN, since I don't have too many friends that come over and want to play games like LBP. It would be more of a Rock Band and Beer type of thing.
I seriously doubt I'll be doing any sort of FPS' on the console, as I'm EXTREMELY biased on the "keyboard/mouse" setup. that aside, I hope to talk to you guys a bit more about this. I don't regret my purchase, I just don't understand the ins/outs of the product at all. I'll probably be asking. :p
I really hope to get some rockband online going, though.

I joined the next gen team, only to sell my 360 a couple months later from realising the PC is a superior 360. Every game I wanted to play was on PC too, but my PC runs them better than the 360. Also my xbox live gold account is left to waste, xbox live wasn't much fun (GTAIV, Rainbow Vegas, Gears of War, TF2...blergh).
So I'd say your PS3 is a good choice. I might get one in the future for blu-ray & general superiority. I've dropped out the console news market for a while now, what happened to 'Home'?

It came out with a pathetic whimper. Played with it on the day of release for a bit then never went back.
Your reasons for selling the 360 are the same reasons I never bought one. Everything the 360 offers I already had for PC, and better.

Home is blind to the worlds within us...waiting to be born.
And on a not so At The Gates note, Home is a great idea but a sad reality at the moment. It is far too early in it's gestation to know whether or not it will fail. It is still very much in Beta and as such needs all of the criticism it generates. A free virtual world of fun and games and movies and friends and exotic locales and interactive gamespaces? Yes, please.

The PSN service is 100% free. All of the demos are usually free as well. The things that cost money are full games, some DLC, some themes, and movie rentals. If you are unsure, it will display a price when you select an item. From what I can remember, while signing up for PSN it will ask for a CC at some point, but entering the information is optional.

From the standard PS3 composite cables? Yes definitely, you go from a 480i (640x480) to 720p or 1080p (1280x720 or 1920x1080) depending on your HDTV, it's a very noticeable difference.

Ack, I hate how they make the cable for 2 bucks, some people sell it for 8 bucks while the rest sell it for insane amounts of money for NO reason.
HD cables are insanely marked up, mostly because people don't know enough to make informed decisions, and as soon as the salesperson says "oh but if you don't get this cable it won't look as good" people's brains shut down and go for it.
In reality, the quality of your cable doesn't matter as much, specially with a digital signal (HDMI). The only time where you might tell a difference is with the longer lengths of cable. A 6 foot cable's quality will not vary very much, it either works or it doesn't.
I got my HDMI cable for 6 bucks, I've done tests with more expensive cables and mine looked just as good :-P
The more you know...
Fishlore
30-01-2009, 09:06 PM
HDMI cables do make a difference. If you get a 1 GBPS cable, you can't watch Blu-Ray in 1080p and actually hear the sound. You need a faster cable to get 1080p video and sound. I'll agree that getting something as speedy as 10 GBPS is pointless, but the speed absolutely, positively makes a difference depending on the aspect ratio.
For the size of the cables most people buy, speed isn't an issue.
Not to mention that half the time you buy an HDTV, they try to sell you the MonsterCable HDMI crap. You're far better off spending the extra money you'd spend on these cables on a better TV rather than on a better cable. Unless you're dealing with top of the line equipment and a really expensive set, you're not liable to notice any kind of difference.
Fishlore
30-01-2009, 10:31 PM
If you're trying to watch Blu-Ray in 1080p and have a 1Gbps cable, you'll most certainly notice something... no sound and/or no picture. This is because the cable can't transfer enough data (video and sound) fast enough to the TV.
Since most games run in 780p, you're absolutely correct. You won't notice a difference. When trying to run a 1080p aspect ratio however you will notice a gargantuan difference unless your cable runs faster than 1 Gbps.
I'll go ahead and try and remember to check the rated speed of my cables when I get home. But yeah, I could see that. However, I doubt this is a big issue with most cables, like I was saying, we both agree that either the cable works or it doesn't, there's no "higher quality" attained from spending an extra 100 bucks on a cable, the money is better spent on nicer hardware.
Fishlore

Completely agree here.
1080i isn't an issue either. Just 1080p. I know because I bought a bottom of the barrel (speed-wise) cable when I got my PS3 and had a rude awakening when I tried to watch my first Blu-Ray or play PSN 1080p games. Bought a cheap 2 Gbps and all problems were solved.
