Managing an inventory suck balls, precision aim is slow, and for the love of God Capcom, why can't the characters move while shooting?
I swear, Dead Space's control mechanic makes RE5 look like last generation third person shooter.

Controls suck big time regardless of the configuration you choose from, it feels like you are controlling a tank, CAPCOM needs to adapt to modern times, I can see the review scores of this game are going to suffer because of this...

RE4 was great. If it is like that but with better graphics then I am excited. Not sure about the setting though. Maybe it will get dark and gloomy and spooky at some point...I hope so at least. Terror and horror are two VERY different things.

I said the same thing about RE4 when going through the initial village levels. Next thing I know, I'm in some claustrophobic sewers with some super beast thing stalking me. Scared me shitless.

I remember when RE4 came out I thought it'd all be in that forest village, with a castle at the end. But Capcom kept their hand close to their chest, and RE4 turned out to have an incredible variety in locations and atmosphere, hopefully this will be the same for 5. I doubt anything will be able to beat the first time you walk out the lake cabin into the thunderstorm though, seeing the glowing torches and red eyes of villagers in the distance. Made my skin crawl.

Atleast they are trying somethin different then just dark streets badly lit, foggy towns..etc. I would say its setting its best feature.

RE4 was a good game and I had no problem with not being able to move and and shoot at the same time. On the other hand the story sucked and it wasn't scary in the least. I hope babysitting the partner isn't required. Also, I heard they added a cover system, why? If the gameplay is similar to 4 then a cover system seems pretty useless.

Tried it now and it seems like RE4 with a new coat of paint and it does seem like it will be good (especially for fanservice from the sounds of it).
BUT in this generation I'm wondering if RE's flaws are really starting to show more than they used to. The controls are so unlike any other game that having not played RE in a while I'm still not used to playing the demo.
Also I am VERY sceptical of the coop feature IMO RE was always meant to be played by yourself. I haven't tried it with another person yet but the AI seems shoody. I still haven't finished the ****ing shanty town level because the AI hasn't got the ****ing sense to get out of the way of the chainsaw!!
That ***** steals my ammo, health, kills and then goes and dies and stops me from playing the game :flame:
So right now I'm sure RE5 will deliver more of the same from RE4 but I'm a little sceptical.

It's funny all the people defending RE5 for being what it is, a pure rehash with better graphics than RE4, it even uses the same bloody animations and doesn't even have ragdoll.

i thought the graphics were nice, and i like the barricading aspects. however the aiming is horrible in general not just that you have to stand still.
i was making myself play it really until i ran out of ammo (hoping to start liking it), anyway i picked some more off the floor for my pistol and found i had to navigate through a menu combining the pistol and ammo...<sigh>. at that point i just turned it off and deleted the demo.
in my opinion there are a few dodgy design choices to fundamental parts of how the game works - so im not going assume the rest of the game is fine and dandy and drop my 'cold-hard' on it
edit: if im doing something wrong and theres a way to pick up ammo for an empty gun and actually reload and start shooting without navigating the crap menu please say
(the last RE i played was code veronica on the dreamcast)

Yep, the only case you would have to do that in is if you partner picked up ammo and you had to request it. In the demo she'll usually just give it to you without that anyway.
Btw, anyone just routinely getting their ass kicked? I forgot how hard RE is without any upgraded weapons at all.

Dead Space was a great RE clone, but it lacked one crucial thing - a 180 degree turn. Granted it gained a bit of extra tension by doing so, but it was still kind of cheap and occasionally annoying, especially since the turning speed was purposefully sluggish.
I can't really say I'm bothered by the controls in this. I realise they're archaic, a little cumbersome, but I'm okay with it. Maybe I'm just used to them, maybe it's just nice to have something a bit different to running and gunning or popping in and out of cover every three seconds (I didn't notice a cover system by the way, although a lot more of the zombies are armed so it wouldn't be completely useless). The coop is the ****ing tits, at any rate. Different sort of tone/pace to Left 4 Dead, it's something you'll sit down with a friend and become absolutely absorbed in together for hours on end. Oh, but be wary of playing together on the same console, split screen is kind of dodgy unless they fix it before release. As it is, you effectively have a quarter of the screen each to work with on a widescreen set up because of the way the frames are spaced out. Would be so much better with a horizontal split option...
It's funny u should mention the split screen thing, cos I got my xbox running on my new PC screen, asus 22" 1080p widescreen with my xbox on 1080p setting on HDMI and i figured that it was the screen or output setting which was changing the layout of split screen, not the game cos COD5 is the same
That said... i actually like it more now with each person getting a smaller, but larger, more viewable screen overall... yeah that makes no sense but meh
Anyone find the the first scenario solid to beat? I haven't done it yet i get ass whooped in that little hut all the time
It might not be the best RE ever! but it's definately worth the ?30-?40 price tag it'll have when it comes out, as there is alot more pap than this on the market, fo sho

It is a shame that you look at RE now and compare it to back then and see what a farcry it is from something as chilling and eerie as resident evil 2... now THAT was true survival horror. I know RE4 and 5 arent intended to be survival horror but i do miss the days of really dark environments in good ol' raccoon city, having actual zombies come after you... I think abandoning the zombie aspect wasnt the greatest move on Capcoms part, but it wasn't all bad since ganados and Minji are kinda similar... And i do love RE4 and probably will RE5, mainly for its story, but hey, ya gotta miss the good ol' days...

The graphics were pretty good, but the controls weren't. I hate not being able to move while I shoot and your inventory is pretty hard to manage while the enemies are still coming at you. The AI for your companion is pretty bad too. I tried playing with a friend and my experience instantly improved. I also hate how if you or your partner die, you have to go back to the main menu and reload everything. This ruined the demo for me, because I found it challenging to beat. After a few tries of both levels, my friend and I both decided to quit. I'm sure the game won't be as bad as the demo, but I probably won't end up buying it.

I mean, old RE definately had less ammo/supplies/random amounts of money to be found than in games like RE4. I mean, you can skip a bunch of pickups and NEVER RUN OUT OF AMMO.
it's not that taht's a bad thing, but the "horror" element has also worn away during the years.

It depends on the game. the older RE games got away with it, because even if you ran out of ammo you could find other means to evade the enemy plus it made the game feel more realistic because sometimes you would walk around a level for a while just to get some ammo.
Other games, it kind of annoys me to run out of ammo and not get any for a while, and then theres no melee attack or it really sucks. And then your stuck at that place because you HAVE to have weapons to get by...

The demo rocks. Anyone who disagrees is a big numpty :)
I don't see the issue with the controls, but then again i'm a fan of not being able to move while firing in RE games - adds to the tension an all that. The rest is RE4 in co-op, which means it's great. The pace is as measured you'd expect from RE and having to stop and take time to dish out ammo/items to your buddy can be geniunely tense, as is having to reload and change weapons in the inventory etc. These aren't control deficiencies, but conscious design choices - and ones that work. The horde is closing in, you better not **** it up!
Picking off headshots is as satisfying as ever and shooting weapons out of peoples hands never gets old. Context sensitive take downs, as always, kick ass. My only gripe is how the camera auto centres when you're moving up or down slopes. Hopefully the final release will have the option to turn this off. Oh, the melee/knife move sucks, but that always has.

Oh, the melee/knife move sucks, but that always has.
I think a neat design decision for that would be to make the melee/knife move's effectiveness drop the more you are forced to use it within a certain timeframe (say, 5 minutes). This way, one random zombie won't bite your head off, but you wouldn't be able to back yourself into a corner and hammer the knife button until the dozen zombies chasing you down the hallway are dead.

This this and this.
Also, you don't have to switch weapons in inventory. Moving them to the up, left, down or right positions in the inventory maps them to the corresponding button on the d-pad, letting you auto-switch with a press. So so very handy.
Edit: Agreed about the knife, but the game should be all about conserving ammo anyway. It's not going to be as tense (OMG THERE'S THAT WORD AGAIN) if there's a decent alternative to fall back on.
