+ Picture of how you think Xen should have looked, had you the choice back in the beginning
+ Draw a picture of one of the known HL1 or HL2 aliens, can use anything legal for reference but everything you do has to be hand drawn, doesn't matter how you do it, sketched, painted, scanned etc.
+ You wake up early one morning and look out of your window to see something very strange and scary outside, what is it? Draw what you see, you can use photo's taken from your bedroom and use images you find so long as their ok to use like that
+ Your best friend who is a serious HL fanboy is having a birthday and because your in a silly mood you decide to bake him a HL style cake. Draw a pic of how it would look. Only rule is it must be original and actually possible to make, so nothing silly, keep it believable
+ create a screenshot of a HL2 video game.. BUT, in the style of a game from the 8bit computers of old (C64, Spectrum etc.), pixel artists should like this one. Make it look like it really was a screenshot from one of those machines. and remember, they only had a few colors to spare ;) so don't forget dithering and making do with limited resolutions
+ Take a photo of yourself dressed up to look like one of the HL1 or known HL2 characters. Use photoshop to retouch the photo if you need to but make it as realistic as your able to
Ok im all outta idea's now.

Once again it's a toss up concerning whom I will vote for. My idea for the contest was pretty much fenric's second idea, only i think it should be unknown aliens. :imu:

unknown aliens would be cool too.. but we'd need to make sure none of them were "inspired" from a certain stolen thing :)

Well, I voted for silentKilla, cause that's the one that actually made me laugh. I must say, however, tim8604's combine in the garden is very well done.

Um, there's no space to vote for #13 on the poll. Someone might want to fix that.

I like Fenric's second Idea for drawing the alien's.

I'm put on there twice, since I had two posts (so i'm up at the top by #2). Hopefully I won't lose votes because my name is in an obscure place :P.

The voting is supposed to end Monday afternoon (allowing 2 days voting this time, as said in the thread itself), so I've set it to that.

Sorry about that :)

working fine this end Tim if that helps. I voted for that one too cause you made an effort to try push the combine into the image and to color correct/match it instead of sticking it on and calling it done. No offence to the others :)

Thanks fenric. The hardest part was actually cutting out those leaves from my original photograph :P. After a while, I was debating going back to that same place and taking a photo of the same thing with a red sheet behind it, hehe. Also, the color correcting consisted of 7 adjustment layers, including : color balance, brightness/contrast, and 5 white overlay layers with masks to adjust the brightness of the combine to match the scene. I've attached a pic showing what it looks like without those layers. Also, I blurred the branch in front of him to make it seem like he was in the focus, and not the tree. Same with the background. I've also attached the source photo..because i've got nothing else better to do right now.
The first one is the combine just slapped in, second is color corrected.

By the way, come next Photoshop contest voting time, I don't want to see anyone voting for themselves. There are several people that are guilty of that, and you know who you are.

I'll be the first to admit that I did...but I have my reasons. On other occasions I haven't voted for myself. For the vector HL2 Art, I voted for stone because I thought his looked the best in my opinion. This week, in my opinion I thought mine looked the best. Is it so much to ask to let us voice our own opinions? Whatever happened to freedom of speech?
I checked up on the whois information on the homelan.com domain, and it is owned by a company in the United States, which allows freedom of speech. I understand where you are coming from, but I don't think you should force us not to vote for ourselves, if we think our's was done the best, and I mean no disrespect for you...I'm just stating my opinion :).

This is our forum, and the rules are our own prerogative. The rules for the photoshop contest are our own, and we can add any that we feel are fit. Voting for yourself really takes the fun out of it in general, because if it was promoted, most votes would be equal because everyone just voted for themselves.

I just don't think it would happen like that. I mean, some people are going to just vote for themselves because they know they won't get any votes otherwise, but like in the other example I said, I voted for someone else; and in that competition, I ended up winning. But you are right that you are able to make the rules since it is your forum. I just think you should talk it over with spud and a few of the other guys first.

voting for yourself is akin to cheating, giving yourself an extra point. Imagine if football teams did that, one side didn't feel the need to, they could lose just cause the other side didn't care and gave themselves a free point anyway, you see how that could be seen as unfair?
Abom is right, everyone is just gonna start voting for themselves if its allowed (why would they vote for the competition if they want to win themselves)
Could always add in the rules that voting for oneself will result in disqualification? Only those people who don't think they have a chance of winning unless they add a point themselves will be bothered about it.
some people are going to just vote for themselves because they know they won't get any votes otherwise,
well in that case it would be an incentive to try harder next time, and if they win then, they know they won fairly. No fun in winning if you give yourself points

You've voted for yourself 4 times out of 5 contests... that's hardly sporting, or fair. Please abide to the new for the next contest. Thankyou.

But all along there hasn't been a rule against voting for yourself, and it's been going fine! Ah, forget it.. make the new rule. I just think you should be allowed to vote for yourself if you think it's the best entry.
Yeah well I may vote for myself just to give myself A point.

I really can't remember who I voted for, kinda weird. I think it was tim (who deserves it), but it could have been myself.
Anyway, I think it's overly restrictive to disallow voting on yourself. Not because I always want to vote for myself or anything (I probably won't enter a lot anyway), but because it's unnecessary. If you worked on something for hours (or a period of time anyway), and you're proud of it, I'd say you've got the right to vote for yourself if you want to.
It may not be sporting, but that's the artist's choice. Sporting behaviour is not something that should be enforced. Fairness, on the other hand, is. But with 30+ voters, artists voting for themselves aren't making a huge, contest winning difference.
You vote for what you like best. If you happen to like your own work best, for whatever reasons, why should you not be allowed to vote for it?
Another thing, when did this contest get such a sharp competitive edge? Did it suddenly become all about winning? Isn't this supposed to be fun, instead of lynching people who vote for themselves :| (I know, I'm exaggerating)?

I think a fun idea for the next contest would be:
What would the world be like without currency?
Imagine a world where people had to pay for everything by trading, like it used to be.....
example: man putting bag of rocks on counter for a candy bar

So for the second one of those, you can't use the computer for anything, but to scan it in? Or does it mean that it all just has to be your own? The reason I ask is because I suck with a pencil, but I can draw okay with my mouse :P.

drawn but using whatever method you prefer, painting,, printing, sketching, airburshing, digital image, pixel art etc. and so on. not limited to the computer as a few artists on this forum are good pencil artists but might suck/not have a drawing tablet, so its kinda opened up for everyone to have a go, minimum requirement, a computer + internet access to post them :D

So basically less 'standard' photoshopping, more drawing. Sounds good, though the amount of people (somewhat) good at drawing is probably smaller than the amount of people good at photoshopping.

My heart is broken. I tried to sign up for the forum to enter the photoshop contest but didn't receive my "click here to activate your account" email in time. Oh well...maybe next time.
