Suddenly it's 1991 and i'm a little kid trying to squeeze through the crowd of people surrounding the SF2 machine at my local arcade - standing on tiptoes to get a brief glimpse and realising that this was something very special :bounce:
Gentlemen, arcade sticks at the ready. FIGHT!

All the responses saying, "I can't wait for a console release on this," YOU are what killed arcades. You lazy gamers who want to just sit at home and play a fighting game...probably online, instead of going out to the arcade and dumping in your quarters.

Haven't really been into SF since after Alpha 2. I hope they ditch the horrible American voiceovers for this one, along with stuff like gameshow-host-voices shouting 'READY GUYS???!?!?!' or 'IT'S TIME TO PARTY!!!!' at the beginning of a round.
Darkside55
06-11-2008, 02:57 AM
Well, at least it's good to know that the people here are trying to play it in arcades as well. I was just having this conversation at a golfland on Sunday, talking about how it's online play that killed the arcade. The arcade was once a staple of life; you couldn't live without the thing. But attendance started dropping, people didn't want to go out anymore and spend their quarters, and then online came and it was the nail in the coffin. Now arcades are empty. I don't even see children there anymore and it breaks my heart. A generation growing up without the arcade. ;(
I hope they ditch...gameshow-host-voices shouting 'READY GUYS???!?!?!' or 'IT'S TIME TO PARTY!!!!' at the beginning of a round.
I think I hate you. I might actually hate you. How're you going to hate the announcer? He's the greatest of all time. How can you possibly hate "Go for broke!" and "Triumph or die?"

Shit sucks. I know it's a fighting game, who gives a shit about fighting game canon, but come on. Gouken's dead. Retconning that, of all things, throws everything out the window.
If you were going to throw another ansatsuken user into the mix, why not Little Miss? That makes more sense, since we actually know Gouken died but nobody knows what happened to her. She'd be the last descendant of Goutetsu and therefore COULD be as strong as Gouken now. Or at least she could be using the techniques Gouken would use.
Alternatively make her a Goutetsu-ryuu ansatsuken user instead of Gouken-ryuu. That'd be savage. Or give her some of Retsu's moves.
But no, Capcom doesn't give a shit about their own canon. They probably don't even remember Little Miss.

Damn it, I had faith in you Warbie.
Gouken had a daughter known only as Oujo-sama, or Little Miss. She trained with Ryu and Ken. Nobody knows what happened to her after Gouken was killed--she was gone by the time Ken arrived to fight Gouki (Akuma).
There were only two drawings ever done for Little Miss, and Capcom has long since forgotten about her. Although I once heard that Makoto was inspired by Little Miss in her original design, because she was going to be an ansatsuken user...but also she was going to be Ryu's sister. All that was thrown out. I don't know how true the first part is anyway; she could've just been inspired by Ryu's brother Shun.
Anyway, assuming Little Miss didn't die, where'd she go? She could've taken up residence with Retsu, the monk from Street Fighter 1, who was a good friend of Gouken. Gouki would not have killed her, but he wouldn't have raised her either. At most he would've seen to her safety and then left.
So Capcom could've totally brought her into canon again by using her instead of Gouken, and she could've either used Gouken's passive, non-killing ansatsuken, or she could've used the murderous ansatsuken developed by Goutetsu and used by Gouki, the "true" ansatsuken. Seeing your father die in front of you by being literally dragged into hell and having his lung punched out would probably give you some murderous intent. But more likely, she'd be a Gouken-ryuu martial artist on a master level. And she could have some kempo moves as well, from training with Retsu.
That way too, it'd explain how Ryu mysteriously learned joudan soukutu geri and shin shoryuken in SFIII, both of which you can see Gouken do in that video. Also if you watch in that video you can see Gouken has shippuu jinrai kyaku, a move that was supposed to have been invented by Ken. Shit's ridiculous; that move is supposed to be from Ken's improvisation, not an actual ansatsuken move.
tl;dr: Darkside knows more about Street Fighter than Capcom, and is deeply saddened at no Little Miss.

I'm highly considering picking up the $150 pro stick, the only problem is money and the fact that I'm not a real big fan of the Japanese-style ball sticks, so I might want to buy a "corn dog"-style stick and swap that out. The nice thing about the Mad Catz SFIV pro stick is that all the buttons are hot swappable and the stick itself has a universal bracket, so you just unscrew and mount a new stick. Really, really nice.
Man, interesting this thread got bumped; for the past two hours I've been watching tourney videos. I'm watching the Arcade Infinity teams matchup in another tab.

Watching people play as him, he seems OK, but I hate the way he looks too much to ever consider playing as him. I'll play him to get his unlockable stuff, and his ending, and then never choose him again.
Oh, speaking of unlockables, some more stuff for consoles:
one unlockable outfit per character
you can unlock the Japanese voices, and INDIVIDUALLY set dub/sub settings per character (so English Cammy and Japanese Ryu, for instance)
you can turn off the announcer (for Laivasse :p)
you can select your win pose; I think there are 11 win poses per character?
selectable taunts at the versus screen
selectable colors at the versus screen for default outfit, don't know about unlockable outfit

Meh that list sounds alright, the selecting poses/taunts seems kind of ridiculous to me. Why not have some taunts you can actually perform when you win, like UT's pelvic thrust. But more tea bagging. Also costumes serve no interest to me, and I've never understand the idea behind it unless its incorporated into online play somehow like in VF5.
Also as far as rufus, yes he does look completely retarded with that weird animation of his stomach.

Eh.
I played about six rounds (low on quarters) at one of the two arcades in Vancouver. Call me a hater but I just really didn't like the new graphics style. I really think Capcom just got lazy and instead of doing good quality sprites opted to do some (arguably cheaper production wise) semi-cell models or whatever they are. I just don't like the flow of the movements. Everything's jerky. Jumps seem to just send you up and gravity feels like it's twice what it should be. Everything looks clumsy, especially the grabs. The hitboxes are clunky.

Maybe I've been spoiled by 3rd Strike. I was really hoping for an actual revival of the series, not a look into the past. As if 3s didn't get boring enough with the same YunChunKen matchups, they decided to bring back the same characters yet again. I think the logic was that since SF2 was such a massive success in both Japan and the States, that going back to those old characters would revive SF interest in North America (and it seems to have worked).
I guess if I want a current-gen fighter I'll have to look to KoF :|
inb4darkseidrage
EDIT: I'm also really pissed that you can still pull that dumbass flying HK-low HK combo on the shotos that you've been able to pull off since SF2. It's so retardedly powerful and I managed to win against people in SF4 by resorting/spamming to it when not knowing any of the new combos.

Yeah but you should know how expensive 3S was to make. 3S also flopped hard. 3S was never popular, with any demographic (Japan or the West). This was really the only way to get Street Fighter back on its feet; cost-effective, and returning to its roots which, as you said, sparked interest.
KoF XII sure is pretty, though. I myself never liked KoF games, didn't like the system. The only way I play those games is if they have Geese. Because, y'know, best fighting game character ever.

I'm a scrub because I can't just pick up a game I'm totally expecting to play differently? As I said, choppy gameplay. I had a very limited number of rounds. Ryu is the only true master of the fist. I started off playing Elena for New Generation/Second Impact, and then Makoto in 3S.

Watching people fight using Fei Long at the start of that video, I'm still disappointed they put him in there instead of my delicious drill-haired Karin Kanzuki. Karin is far superior to Fei Long in every way. Fei Long's rushing punches, the rekkaken, has no variance...it's three forward-moving punches. That's all it does. Karin's kourenken can be three punches, or finish with a palm strike, or her anti-air kick, a slide kick, or a counter. Kourenken has the best mixup game for a single move that I can think of, for any SF character.
Fei Long's got the rising dragon kick, which has higher reach than Karin's mujin kyaku, and hits three times instead of twice, but I don't consider it THAT big an advantage. Karin's ressen ha is the same as Fei Long's rekkukyaku.
Their super arts are pretty much the same.
But one thing that Karin has that Fei Long doesn't have are COUNTERS. Geese Howard-style command counters. And as I said, she can go into a counter at the end of her kourenken, to catch people trying to get a poke in at you or a sweep kick between your punches.
Oh and she's got that 360 command throw for wakeups.
Man, why'd they even put Fei Long in there? Capcom haet Karin. :(

Karin was in Alpha 3. She's Sakura's rival, which is one of the reasons I think she should've been in there.
If they brought back Sakura, and wanted to fill a spot with Fei Long, why not go for Karin and get a better Fei Long, PLUS a rival for one of the new characters?
Plus Fei Long was supposed to have given up on fighting anyway, because he knew he could never equal Bruce Lee.

Basically I'm saying that Capcom was oh so unwise to put a character with a command counter in the roster. It becomes unfair if you give me a character who has counters. Now, you give that same character a directional, charge fireball (Oro from SF3 could control the direction of his projectile with the buttons as well), and a focus attack which is Ryu's best move from SF3, shit gets ridiculous unfair. I'm just going to stand still and counter all day, like a pillar. The Pillar of Gouken.
It's a good thing they didn't give him an air fireball, otherwise I'd practically have Geese Howard in a Street Fighter game.

I'm just going to go ahead and get the cheap-o stick for now and get the TE later.

Bit of poking around reveals that the 360 sticks should work fine on PC - any wired controllers just work through Microsoft's drivers (and wireless can work through an adapter). No telling how well, but if it works on 360, I don't see why it shouldn't work the same on PC.
So what's the different between the regular and TE sticks? Just cheaper parts/less pretty exterior?
Warbie
02-02-2009, 02:01 PM
Pretty much. The TE is made with the same components as the arcade machine and it looks pretty much identical. It has a little flip up door in the front for storing the cable and you can screw it down to a surface. It's meant to be very easy to mod if you're into that kind of thing - put a new stick, change buttons etc. It looks pretty heavy.
I'm thinking of going for the cheaper of the sticks now as I tend to play with on my lap rather than on a table.

I used to have this heavy wooden cabinet stick for my PS2 that I played with on my lap. I miss that stick. ;(
And to be perfectly honest I like the design of the standard fightsticks more than than the TE; all the characters on the face instead of the red lacquer.

Played it for 2 hours last night and its just how I expected it to be. The gampplay is perfect, exactly what a street fighter game should be like. The graphics are amazing with great attention to detail on each character (especially the facial expressions during combat).
Im using a normal 360 pad and can pull off moves with ease, you don’t need to buy that Mad Katz pad or an arcade stick. I found using the analogue stick to do ultra moves easier than using the D pad.
Ive played through the single player campaign as Ken on Medium and found the AI easy up until you get to Seth. That mother fu&^er is so hard!! When you play him after the first round and win he "reenergises" himself and then hes almost impossible to beat. Hes fast and can almost predict what your gonna do. The worst thing is tha the can teleport fast and so this throws you off when your about to lay into him with a mean combo. Also get too close and he throws you with ease. I did finally beat him after like 10 goes but didn’t get an achievement or anything! Grrrr
Now heres what I dont like. Blankas voice acting makes him out to be a stupid CBBC villain monster type creature and the voice acting for him is terrible. We were told the 360 version will have more of a story element in the single player... bolox. The only story for Ken was the single player Ken scenario starts ogg with an anime cartoon of Ken sat on his weight training bench looking at a Postcard from Ryu asking for a rematch. Ken asks his pregnant for permission to go spa with Ryu and she says yes. thats the end of Kens intro story. You then go and have a regular bout with Ryu with no added dialogue to state Ken and Rys are friends or anything like that. After beating Ryu its the usual fight 6 or 7 opponents (last one is Seth) and then you get Kens second and final cut scene. He goes back home and asks his wife if shes and baby is ok.... thats it the end. What a joke! No achievement unlocked either. Was hoping for a more story based single player telling the player about the characters past and what their intentions are for being in Street Fighter, but instead the storys are more like gimmicky anime cartoons trying to get the player more involved into the game but it fails badly.
Overall its a great game and Im sure multilayer will where its at. Pulling off a 17 hit ultra combo to defeat your foe has never been so exhilarating in a fighting game. Well done Capcom, you've delivered the goods on this one :-)
The graphics do seem dummed down compared to the Arcade version, the shading is not as intense and some of the extra effects are missing too, still looks gorgeous
Oh and When Ken does his spinning kick he doesn’t say “tatsumaku-sempi-kiyaku” he just growls which is a shame.

How are you playing it on console right now? Don't make me kill you...
Sounds like Seth has Gill's "REGENERATION!" which is kinda cool. I wonder if Seth's regen has the same weakness Gill's does...
Also don't forget you can unlock different voice actors, so hopefully if you don't like one the other will suffice.
You then go and have a regular bout with Ryu with no added dialogue to state Ken and Rys are friends or anything like that.
I don't think there's anyone who doesn't know that. Children come out of the womb knowing that.
And Ken might have lost saying "tatsumaki" but he gains Jotaro Kujo-esque, "ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA ORA" for his ultra.

A freind has got a flashed 360. Seth does not regenerate like Gill does, he enery doesnt come back. He just says something like "now feel my true power", then te round starts and you instantly notice he uses all his powers to beat you as soon as he can... I was litereally just sat there watching him teleport around the screen and hitting me from all directions.

I love Ryu as a character, but I'm trying to distance myself from using him. I want to use other people...last week I spent every waking moment playing 3S with my friends, and I just wanted to get away from being Ryu. As I put it to one of my friends after I defeated him soundly, "This is why I don't want to play Ryu. Don't make a monster out of me."
I think I'm going to main Abel for IV.
But I'm entering a tourney on the 21st, and man...I have a feeling I'm going to select Ryu at one point, because I need a pass to the second stage of the tournament. Finals will be in SF, and anyone who makes it there goes to Evo in Vegas.

I was getting the PC version of SF4 (for the higher res's and cripser visuals) but it seems it's been delayed, which is always the case with Capcoms PC releases, so I've "obtained" the 360 version to play until then, which I will, when my missus stops watching shitty ghost programs so I can get on the ****ing x-box.
Darkside55

Ha, you've got the game already, I just got back from getting the fightstick.
So, the standard fightstick is a pretty solid piece, more than I was actually expecting. Hefting it versus my Dreamcast arcade stick, it's heavier, but nowhere close to my old Pelican Tournament Edition. The ball stick is good, has a nice feel to it, and the square restrictor actually isn't a bother at all, like I thought it would be. I'm used to a circular or octagonal gate, but what they say about square plates finding the corners seems to be true.
The buttons are kinda "light" on this stick; it isn't a problem or anything, but they just feel somewhat...light. Insubstantial. I don't know how better to explain it. I assume this is one of the reasons the $150 sticks are said to have higher-grade parts; these buttons don't have a real "snap" or weight to them. I'm sure you understand what I'm talking about if you've used arcade sticks.
Thing's not flat, either. It's got a bit of a downcurve below the buttons and the stick. Interesting aesthetic, serves no real purpose but looks. Also I am digging the face on this thing--the original eight World Warriors are displayed, and I just now realized whose giant fists these are. (Dhalsim's, haha. He's punching across the controller)
You've all heard the features like Start and Select being on the back, turbo (two speeds), there's a switch to make the joystick function as either D-pad, left analog, or right analog; there's a button lock. Home button is right on top, though...I don't assume it'll be a problem at all, but it's a button I would have assumed would've also been on the back. Oh, also I should note that the cable is 4 meters long.
So all in all, a pretty good stick. Worth the price if you can't find/afford one of the TEs.
I'll be practicing using this thing on Tekken 5 until I get SFIV, WHICH BTW I almost didn't get. Turns out the preorders for the Collector's Edition ended yesterday at GameStop, and other stores have been out for awhile, but I managed to snag one at a store that still had some--but I'll be getting it the 19th instead of the 17th.
But I also managed to score two gigantic SFIV posters that were put up on display, because no one had claimed them. Score.

Was playing SF4 for another 2 hours last night, its just so damn enjoyable! Reminds me alot of SF2 Turbo in relation to the timing andcharachter roster. Ive found out how to unlock Seth.... you have to complete Arcade mode with every non-unlockable charachter. Once youve got Seth, you then need to complete Arcade mode with every unlockable charachter to get Akuma.
I was doing the old combos and moves I used to do with Ken/Ryu on SF2 Turbo and they are still effectine in this game. Eg, for Zangief just keep jumping straight up and when he gets close do a HK and it will land 99% of the time, boring but works. Zangief is relly hard to beat on the ground, you gotta use air attacks and projectiles. He has this very fast reverse fist punch which is devestaing when it lands.
Been practising more using the EX Moves and the "absorb counter" thingy, works really well.
Hey Darkside55, are you getting it on xbox 360?

parrying
Very true, but instances like that in 3S where you need to parry a full super like that are extremely rare. In a standard match you're going to parry perhaps one or two hits and then punish.
I play P Groove in CvS2 as well, it's the only groove I use, and even there the opportunities for parry are limited. Parry's main use is against projectiles, projectile supers you can't block or avoid, or to create an opening. I could parry the entirety of mega psycho crusher, but I'm not going to, y'know. Parry one hit, retaliate.
Plus the thing with parry was, casuals just didn't get it. It was off-putting to them.

Had a Street Fighter 4 Weekend, was awesome! Cant say how much I love this game. Eurogamer gave it a 10 too :-)
Thing Ive noticed is that the little quips the charachters say at the end of a fight are unique to whichever fighter they beat. For example, when Blanka beats E.Honda he says something like "fighting has no room for fatsos", which I think is a nice touch. Didnt know there was a TrialMode where you are challenged to perform certain combos (The Trial challenges teach you moves and combos of scaling difficulty for each of the game's 25 characters, a useful feature for expanding your competence - Eurogamer)
Ive unlcoked all charachters except for Seth, Akuma and Gouken. Should have that done tonight then Im gonna go through the Trial mode. Well done Capcom, you really have done the Street Fighter series justice with SF4.

17-02-2009, 09:34 AM
Hey bam23, it is different to Tekken in that its faster and you need to use combos to beat the top players. I find in Tekken you can block block block block then do a couple of hard hits and go back to blocking again. SF4 relies more on being offensive (especially because of the the Focus Attacks).
I think you just rent at least and see how you like it. I unlocked Akuma last night :-) Gonna unlock the rest of the charachters and then move onto the challenges and trials. By the time Ove done that hopefully the Live Servers will be on and I can get to kicking all ur asses ;-)
Oh and I noticed when you fighter your rival (the charachter you fight just before Seth), the two fighters swap banter throughout the rounds. For example, Abilnd Guile are rivals and after Abil throws Guiles he says "Were you really in the military?", small yet cool touch.
Anyone getting the Mad Katz pads? I find it near impossible to do Vega and Guiles Ultra moves. You got do: Down diaganol back > Down diagonal forward the Up diagonal back followed by LK+MK+HK. Managed to do it once :-(
Ithink its too easy to ger you Ultra bar full. I find my Ultra bar gets filled up quicker compared to my Super. Ultra bar gets full from taken damage and Super Combo slots fill up from combos and blocks you do. My combo bar doesnt get full until halfway through the second round, probably becasue EX moves use a combo slot. Still it balances out the fights perfectly and its something you realise after your 50th fight.
Capcom have done a great job of making sure all the charachters stregths and weaknesses are visible e.g. Dhalsim is really sh1t in the air, hes got more hang time the Michael Jordan and slow as a snail. But on the ground his reach makes up for it. Also his teleportaion can be done in mid air, so you teleport to another location are you are still in the jump phase so you can initiate an arial attack.

So how are you guys enjoying Ryu and Ken IV? Boy it sure is fun having a fighting game with two whole characters in it. People around the globe for the past several days have been enjoying playing two characters over and over and over again. Isn't it great that you can log onto a network battle at any time of day and get to fight Ryu OR Ken? It's great to see that no matter where you're from--North America, Europe, Asia, or just about anywhere!--you get to fight Ryu. And Ken. And Ryu. And Ken. And Ryu. And Ken.
For several hours.
It's also nice to see that everyone around the world plays them exactly the same. Hey, your tatsumaki into shoryuken might not work, EVER, but you can take comfort in knowing that among the hundred(s) of thousand people who purchased SFIV, 99% of you are all doing the exact same thing. Repeatedly.
For several hours.
Boy what a great community. HADOUKEN, am I right guys? XD

First couple of hours:
"This stick is great."
About seven hours later:
"DUCK YOU PIECE OF SHIT, NOT JUMP! NO! STOP...STOP FIGHTING ME YOU STUPID THING! Oh great now it isn't even working anymore...goddamn it..."
I could have just ended up with a bad stick, I don't know. But it tries to fight against me at every opportunity. Sometimes it does what you want and sometimes it's like, "**** you, I'm going to get stuck in the down position or the forward/back position, and even manually placing me in the default position won't do anything for you. Sorry I'm making your battles against me rather than against the opponent."
Don't be fooled by what Capcom has told you. Mad Catz controllers are still shit. It should not come as any surprise. MAD CATZ.

ha ha Darkside ur sarcasm is on the dot. I think its becasue alot of gamers whio played df2 in the 90s are only getting back into Street Fighter games now that SF4 is out. They must have not played all the incrnations of SF2 or Third Strike and so are learning Ken/Ryu inside out again from fresh. Granted they can do this in challenge mode/training mode but they arent as fun as fighting a real apponant.

I've had extremely few laggy matches. Like two out of hundreds. It's weird; sometimes when you're searching matches there will be no bars visible, sometimes there are, but usually when you get into the lobby there are bars. Sometimes there aren't. :/
But despite that there's been almost no lag. During the wee hours of the morning I've been playing people from Japan and Korea (I believe it's Korea) and it's been fine even if there are only two bars.

Some news about the stick, apparently there have been a batch of bad SE ones, but some work great. It's the luck of the draw, but if you DO get a bad stick, you can take an allen wrench to the thing and pop in a sanwa or seimitsu stick. The inside of the SEs are plug-and-play modifiable like the TE.
So if you get a bad one, $25 fix. Not bad considering the rising price of arcade sticks post SFIV; e-sellers and ebay have sticks (ALL arcade sticks, notably the HRAP series and the Mad Catz sticks) from $150-300.

Majority picked Ken. There was a Sagat, a Blanka, I believe there was a C.Viper, and there was one Ryu, possibly two. I didn't bother to even look at other peoples' matchups though; I walked around listening to pokemon music on my Soundwave.
Anyway, there were just so many Kens. Everyone was Ken. Ken Fighter IV. And here comes this guy picking Abel, and they're like, "Oh snap, look who that asian guy picked." Yeah, I got nicknamed "Asian Guy."

If you're talking about Abel's throw, because it's a command throw you can't counter it, and it has priority over your regular LP+LK throw. If you do a regular throw at the same time your opponent does a regular throw, you'll cancel each other out.
C. Viper's actually a very good character to learn. She's very SNK, in my eyes. Her lightning fist is so versatile, and her flame kick is nice. Try jumping in with a LK, then while you're still in the air use her flame kick.

Darkside, see if you can figure this out: I'm trying to do C. Viper's challenge mode (where you have to input what it tells you to). In level 3, the 2nd combo where it asks you to do a jumping heavy kick followed directly by a heavy burning kick while still airborne... I can pull it off fine, but Dan seems to block the burning kick and it's not registering. Or maybe I'm just doing it wrong. Either way, I can't figure it out.
Edit: After about 20 minutes of trying, I finally pulled it off. Not sure how I did it, but....

Yeah, I got up to the one where you have to pull of an EX seismic hammer, followed by a high jump immediately into a burning kick. My sore fingers needed a rest.

I have not done C viper's trial challenges but some of the moves they ask ya to do seem pretty hard to time in order to string together. Was doing Ken's earlier to see what the challenge is all about (since I know all his moves).
The last one I did with Ken was jump H kick> M punch > H punch > M shoryuken and then canceled into a shoryureppa (super).

Single player is just for learning each character, unlockables and practising moves/combos. There's plenty of fun to be had in arcade/challenge/training modes - i've spent over 10 hours just trying to master Abel - but multiplayer is where the game shines.
Best game in ages btw :)

How many of you are using the standard PS3/360 pad? Im getting a MadKats pad soon, homefully will make combos easier
Also, I have a 16Meg ADSL connection with 1.2Meg upstream and I cannot connect to any player or ranked match online on my 360
When I search for a Quick Player match, I get 3 results and at first the network symbol flashes and then goes solid, but no bars next to it, does that mean its a weak connection? I can connect 1 out of 10 times like this but its very annoying.

Btw how does the match making work? Is it like in Soul calibur 4 where you press search button and get the windows saying "match full" untill you give up? Or then it was some other xbox360 game, but the idea is the same, the game would only lookup one match, try it, if it was full -> back to title screen.

I've been playing all yesterday and today. I'm really liking it, though the people I play with don't really like me... :X I can't manage to pull off the Ultra combos very well (like Ken's) because of the Xbox controller. It really is shit for this game. Having a hard time with Focus Canceling and the like as well D:
So would anyone recommend picking up this game if you haven't played SF since SF2 on SNES?
I'm itching for a good fighting game but I don't need one asap.
I have been using a PS3 dual shock pad but got a blister. hehe
Starting using the analog stick for a bit so I could still play without killing my thumb. Took me a bit to get that down with some control using my thumb. So small compared to an arcade stick.
I see amazon just got in stock the hori real arcade pro 3 (ps3). Might have to order one. ($100)

I might need to get one then in addition to upgrading my SE fightstick with a new joystick. Thing is so borked. Last night for a brief few minutes it was interpreting "left" as "down." It got stuck in that position.

SFIV, in my opinion, is the easiest Street Fighter to get into. You certainly won't be too handicapped if you pick up the game and start playing it, go through arcade mode and the challenges to help yourself bring your game up, and fight against people online to hone your skills.
It's a much easier from SF2 to SFIV than it was from SF2 to SF3. Even if you never played SF2, this game pretty much guides you through what you need to learn.
I definitely recommend picking it up.
Plus if you support SFIV Yoshinori Ono said that he'll consider Darkstalkers IV, so do it. Buy the game so that we can get a sequel to the real greatest Capcom fighter.
Ah your right. It's back to out of stock status.
Guess I picked one up in time. ;)

Those HRAPS are one of the best sticks you can get. There's a special edition that Amazon.jp used to sell, the HRAP3 SA (special addition) that had Sanwa buttons in addition to the Sanwa stick. That one's harder to come by and more expensive, but it's real nice.
Only thing I don't quite like about the HRAPS are the way the buttons are splayed. To me, it's more suited for Tekken or Soul Calibur.

Hey Darkside55, what you think of the HORI fightsticks? I was gonna get a Mad Kats Pad but they are more expensive that the HORIs
Darkside55
27-02-2009, 10:33 AM
They're good sticks. But they're expensive now; all sticks and stick parts are in high demand for SFIV. A Hori Real Arcade Pro is going to run you probably at least $180. Unless you're Asus and magically get one for $100.
And Abel's a great character. I don't know why, really, but for some reason--even before knowing about him and his moveset--he stuck out to me in the previews. And I said to myself, "That's my main. That guy is my main."
And I was telling people that, and one of my friends said, "Provided you actually end up liking him."
It took a single round to know that I was right. Within two, three matches, it was like me and Abel had been best friends forever. He's so unlike any character I've played before, being a grappler, but I just mesh with him. Now I'm throwing people all over the place.
But I want to work on my combos. Right now my Abel is really about poking and grabbing, but Abel's the kind of character where you can rush and get your opponent scared that every move he's going to make is going to result in being combo'd or thrown. Push them into a corner and just dominate them.
Make sure you go through the challenge mode when you start off with Abel, and really work those combos they give you. You won't be learning it for the combos themselves at first, you'll be learning it for the timing. Once you get the timing in for things like f.MK > s.HP > Change of Direction, it's over. You can do so much. You'll be sitting there in challenge mode thinking, "I bet this works. I bet I can do this if I time it right."
And you'll be surprised what he can do. Everything he does is like combo madness.
And if you can't combo your opponent, get right up in their face and throw 'em. When in doubt, throw it out.
Ben Shepard
27-02-2009, 11:00 AM
The reason Im getting a stick or Mad Katz pad is that I can't do Abels combos on the 360 pad, its just too hard. The c.HP followed by Change of Direction sounds easy, but on the 360 pad its damn near impossible.
Might get a Hori stick if the Mad Katz pad are'nt in stock until April

its easily the most balanced ever anyway. my only gripe is some of the priorities are way off. my main is sagat and tiger knee dominates pretty much everything. out of about 150 online matches only about 10 of them had unacceptable lag so the netcode is really solid too (certainly as good as the awesome HD remix)

How the heck do you beat seth in easy with a character that doesn't have long range deny? I tried seth for like 2h with abel. Usually I got to the point where I had gotten a few combos trough, he had like 3/4 health left, then he just starts teleporting, does the super, whops K.O. With Ryu this was piss easy.

You have to make sure your ultras and supers connect against Seth when playing as Abel - he's rubbish at blocking these. Spamming light/punch kick when he starts spamming teleport near you works pretty well as does rolling through sonic booms.

if youre playing it just to unlock akuma/gouken/seth just set the rounds to 1, the skill to easiest and the time to 30 seconds. that ultra combo he has takes like 10 seconds to complete and usually by then its timed out and you've won, as long as youve given him a decent amount of damage at the start (which if he has the revenge bar unlocked you probably have)
if youre doing it for skill (or the complete on hardest difficulty achievement) i'd say just get better at abel.

Fixed.
Playing with abel against seth I did a lot of stringed moves. Going through the trial challenges with each character helps. Goes through basic moves and also stringing moves together so they are not blocked. Also, just did a serach and found this. (http://mycheats.1up.com/view/section/3163881/25944/street_fighter_4/xbox_360#Combos) Might help.
If seth attacked with his long arms then I usually did:
(Jump) Medium Kick > (Crouch) Heavy Punch > special throw moves
or
(Jump) Medium Kick > (Crouch) Heavy Punch > change of direction > cancel into super/ultra
If he did the long range attack then I rolled in. If you are not quick you may be right next to him when he is ready for another attack and he might grab ya.
His ultra move can also go through fireballs/sonic boom etc.

New sticks are shipping as we speak, should be in stores at the end of this month. And a third shipment will probably come after that, so they aren't some rare collectors dream.
Now to the game. Is anyone else having this what I call position retardation. I mean when I'm at the left side, I can pull combos pretty easilly. But if I get thrown to the right side I can't even pull simple ultra's or supers. Might be that I really haven't had to learn any hard combos before. Bakurei, you've probably got a "favored side." Everybody has them initially. Always seems like you can do one thing (or a few things) easier facing one direction than another. You get over it with practice...eventually it all becomes muscle memory.
I dont know what shotos means?
"Shoto" - short for "shotokan," as in shotokan karate, which everyone mistakenly thinks Ryu, Ken, Akuma, and Gouken practiced. In reality it's ansatsuken, a fictional style, but the term "shoto" stuck. It's also applied to characters like Sakura and Dan, even though Sakura's untrained and Dan uses saikyo.
The term has negative connotations; "shotoscrub," "shotofag," etc. In part because the characters are easy mode, and also because everyone picks them (even before Ken Fighter IV, everyone picked the shotos). These characters have a stigma on them.
Anyway, Cammy's cool. She's no Abel, though. ;)

The rising elbow launch is god.

The most important things to know about Abel are that his ultra and ex wheel kick go through fireballs - making him the shoto (especially Ryu) killer - and that forwards medium kick is fast, has crazy reach, and helps you dictate the fight. As B-Man mentioned, duck fierce punch launches ppl into the air allowing you to air grab or wheel kick them. After you focus hit someone dash in quickly and tornado throw or just perform a quick ultra. Rolling followed by tornado is obviously good :)
Abel has been my favourite charatcer since day one, he's a ****ing beast!

ya i use the jump in-medium kick to rising elbow launch+air grab alot
still trying to master the focus-dash-tornado throw though... kinda hard with the 360 dpad :P
i actually have a big grin on my face every time someone chooses ryu or ken whenever i'm using Abel cause they never expect the roll through fireballs/wheel kick :)

"Good sir, I see after you have moved the cursor around the select screen in a random fashion for ten seconds, pretending as if you will pick someone to counter my Abel, you have inevitably landed on Ryu/Ken/Sagat. If you are a novice, which I assume you are, you are likely to try the same hurricane/tiger knee-into-uppercut combination, lots of jumping backwards to avoid me, and perhaps a few mistimed ultra attacks. If you are a moderate-to-experienced player, you will likely try to zone me out with fireballs, use your normals to poke at me, and try to get some crossover combos of opportunity or try to bait me into using an unsafe move, and then punish me.
To you I say: give up. There is nothing you can do against me. You have already lost this fight.
P.S., if you have chosen Akuma and you think you can use his keep-away game on me, you're already dead."
Abel is the beastliest character in the game. If you use Abel as a rushdown character, using his f.MK --> dash, as Warbie said you can dictate the fight. You can scare the hell out of people with that, comboing with fierce punch or conditioning them to think you're going to throw out that fierce, and dash right up to their face and tornado throw. J.MK crossovers into c.FP, cancel that first elbow hit into change of direction...and just go wild.
And if you want you can just sit back and turtle for awhile against certain characters.
Shotos spamming fireballs at you? Focus cancel and build meter, and then once you have ultra hit 'em with it from full screen. I love when they don't realize his ultra can hit them from the entire screen away when they're in the fireball animation (before the fireball actually leaves their hands).
Abel is the greatest.

Abel is a beast. Currently using abel as my main. Just learning how to do the focus cancel moves in fights. Usually I just press forward too many times and get nothing done, or get beaten (PANIC!). But my to be main is 100% Dhalsim, god I love this dude. Pretty defensive character but can deal out massive damage in short time, teleport, combo, super then ultra, teleport and kick the guy in to the ultra. Pure madness :D

Dang, it's a pity we're on different systems. I'd like to play your Dhalsim. He's a knee-slapper to play/play against; mainly because whenever my friends and I are together Dhalsim gets stereotypical Indian-voice commentary, with dubbed-over move names like "Slurpee Punch."
He's an awesome character though, and ultra --> teleport is madness.

Foolish. Make sure you connect, THEN do your victory pose.
I'm guilty of hitting people with a finishing blow and turning around before it hits, though. Something's just so satisfying about knowing it will connect, and then turning away from your opponent as if you won't even give them the pleasure of looking at them as they fall.

this is my first street fighter so i have no idea about the mechanics about the game. so, i've literally lost to about every ken tonight. their srk was beating out a lot of the things i was trying. when i'd go for a punish, they'd srk again and knock my balls off. and i actually played one that managed a jump kick to sweep thing that he repeated over and over till i was ko'd, and he got a perfect. enlighten me! it's the most frustrating thing. i dont have as much trouble fighting anyone else but ken or ryu. ****ers./
B_MAN
03-04-2009, 06:49 AM
it's all about being patient imo
most fighters out there, especially the novices playing Ryu and Ken, will continue to make the first move (even if it's a fireball in the corner), allowing you to counter with whatever fits each situation
so, make it look like you're coming in to grab and let them do their shoryuken. once they hit the ground, grab them with your tornado throw (assuming you're Abel!). or if you see them repeating moves like the jump kick+sweep, simply BLOCK or better yet, focus attack and then dash+tornado throw
don't be afraid to BLOCK BLOCK BLOCK.
Darkside55
03-04-2009, 07:13 AM
Jump kick? Standing MK, or crouching FP, or falling sky if they haven't thrown out the kick yet. You can also just block the hit and tornado throw. You'll get them before they have a chance to do anything. Sweep? Block, punish with cr.MP -> CoD, or any one of his crouching combos.
If they're standing there throwing fireballs at you, use FADC to build meter, then just empty jump and let them come to you. Or hit those idiots with ultra from full screen.
Shoryuken you really should be able to get off tornado throw at all times before they throw another uppercut. You can also punish with combos or knock them down and go for a crossover.

I've started to play a lot with Gouken. Only char I have trouble against is Sagat... I mean this guy makes 2xHK and BAM 50% HP gone... Just so sick, you only need to do like two moves and whii we has winrar.
But yea against Ryu, Ken just block a lot. You could for instance start with a roll, and just go to block right away. If it's a normal idiot ken/ryu he'll go for the srk, block that and you're easy off. Against these guys I tend not to use any ex moves. I'll just punish with cod and super when they srk. And in the early levels if they do that whirl kick (forgot name), especially if ken does this don't try to punish after it, keep blocking, 80% of the time srk will come and then you can punish.
One thing I've really been mad about lately is the fact that like 60% of the games are way too laggy. Press up -> go get some coffee -> come back -> he's about to jump.
I just had the most fun against some bad akuma player. He first did random super (maybe he thought I didn't know I can just jump over it), I jumped over that and he went straight to ultra and I again jumped over that. NO - NO - PUNISH.

woo, doing a little better now against them shotos. i figured playing wrecklessly against them isnt such a good idea since shoryuken priority is the tits, and getting more used to punishing whiffed shoryukens with FA3 > fierce tornado throw or ultra/super. still havent really found a way to put the f.mk or tornado throw into regular use yet, most of the players on ranked have been jumping away for the whole match so i've had to use FA as a punish to crumple them first x(
also doing the 5th hard trial for abel right now, its a turd.

I've finally gotten all the normal challenges done. Abel's fifth hard trial is a bitch, mk + dash + hp seems to have insane timing. I've been able to do it like 30% of the time...
Btw how many battle points you guys have? I'm really getting bored since finding a players that actually know how to play are hard to find... Only thing I find are beginers and srk spammers... The matchmaking seems pretty dull. Even thou I got 1500 points it puts me against players with 0-200 points... Takes some time to get more points since I get like 10-20 per match.
Second thing I decided to do is refuse to play against Fagot, I mean Sagat players. I mean I wouldn't mind if the players actually had learned something nice with the character but no. 99% of fagot players just spam two moves... And sagats damage seems way too high. He hit's 150 with normal hk, thats like the same dmg gouken does with his ex moves...

So, I'm at a friend's, having the chance to play against people on Xbawks Live. People on here suck serious dick. Like no joke. This controller is f'ing terrible; it's not like it's the first time I used it or anything (had to use them in the GameSpot Nationals), but seriously, even with this piece of junk I haven't lost a single match in hours. I went from 0 BP to 2000 in like two hours. People on Live are goddamn terrible.
360 version of SFIV has superior graphics, but the competition compared to PSN is like fighting against children. Little children. Little children who do not have arms, they have stumps. Stumps that they cannot play video games with, so they have to hit the controller with their noses and push the buttons with their tongues.
Anyone from HL2.net up and playing right now on 360?

Man, playing this game on Xbox Live from Australia is absolutely shit. The best games I can find have the second lowest possible connection rating (one red bar) with most not even showing the bar. Even then when i try playing any of those games its like playing with lead balls attached to your character as every move takes longer to perform and in order to play the game well you need clairvoyancy.
I got no complaints getting my assed wupped by my brother when playing next to him, but losing to some ****head spamming Tiger Punch over and over and over again when the game wont let me pull off any of those "passing through" type moves because of the difference in lag, its ridiculous.
