Dust hasn't even began to think about settling around Fallout 3's cushy new spot on store shelves, but developer Bethesda already has the coordinates set for its next megaton's drop date. According to publishing exec Paul Oughton, Bethesda plans on releasing another title in its sprawling, freeform Elder Scrolls series of RPGs -- in only two years, no less.

"At the moment we've got Fallout 3 for this year and potentially there's a new Elder Scrolls title in 2010," said Oughton.

So, there's the "what" and "when," but how about the "where"?

"At the moment we're not that interested in the Wii. We're going to stick to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC," he noted, giving gamers everywhere one less thing to worry about.

Considering Fallout 3's boundless expanses, as well as Bethesda's potential plans for dog armor, d'awwwwdorable dog feet pajamas, and other downloadable things of the like, 2010 sounds like the perfect time to unravel a new Elder Scrolls. We do have one question, though: how can you follow up expeditions into and subsequent ass-kicking of hell itself? Kind of nuked the fridge there, we think.

Some observations:
1) The writer said that Oblivion = Hell. I raged. Hard.
2) Only two years from now? Granted, a small team has been working on concept art and toying with the story for well over a year now I believe, but if its only going to be two years, I'm pretty sure that they are going to use the same engine as Oblivion and Fallout 3 (maybe a few updates)

Dog armor. How true.

I wish people would stop using the nuke he fridge thing, it's stupid. Indiana Jones was never realistic, they might as well say jump from a plane in a dingy. The nuke + fridge bit wasn't the problem with Indy 4.

It was never realistic but surviving a nuclear blast inside a fridge is just goddamn INSULTING. And then the goddamn PRAIRIE DOGS CAME OUT AND CHEERED FOR INDIANA.

I loved Oblivion so I am eager for another entry, albeit one with everything better than with Oblivion.

And hey, did everyone forget that Indy drank from the Holy Grail?? He will survive anything forever.

I liked Oblivion but something pushed me away from playing it. I much preferred Morrowind but can't quite figure out what it is about Oblivion, maybe the leveling system... hmm.

Anyway I'd defiantly buy another Elder Scrolls.

As would it Mutley
I liked Oblivion and the mods rocked out so it was good for me.
But the thing is - where would they stage it?

Elsweyr is my preference.
Summerset is probably it.

Hell yeah

I'm really looking forward to play a new and improved elder scrolls game. This game series is pretty much my favorite game series. I hope they correct all the complaints about Oblivion.

I'm a little surprised and disappointed if they use the same game engine as Oblivion, but it's certainly not a deal breaker.

I hope they address details like AI bugs.

I would rather they reduce the amount of voice overs if that's what is necessary to blend the use of more unique voice actors. With hundreds if not thousands of NPCs, it really hurt Oblivion to have only 5+1 voice actors or whatever it was.

At least they could develop some audio code and assign the different NPCs a different pitch value for speaking. So even if all Brittons or Elves have the same voice actor, their could be 3 or more different voices because of differences in pitch. It makes a big difference.

I don't think they need reduce the amount of voiceovers, just need to re-evalute who they hire. Big name celebrities aren't a necessity IMO.

Anyway, am really happy to hear this news playing an ES game is always good entertainment. I just hope this next incarnation is more...populated, like ES 3. And they better have the DB as a joinable faction, dammit (if it fits the setting).

It's going to be Skyrim.

I can feel it.

There is no Emperor or legitamite heir.

There's a splinter faction in Skyrim (I forget the name) that will certainly cause trouble due to this:
There is a strong underground movement called the Horme that believes Potema and her deposed son of Uriel III to be the last of Tiber Septim's true blood and under that principle lead raids against Imperial interests in the province.

According to the Pocket book, all the Skyrim cities are scheming against eachother and stabbing eachother in the back. Makes a good atmosphere for story.

Recent stories released on the lore forum by MK have been Nord and Skyrim related.

Edit: We better be getting the original Dunmer male voice actor back.

lol. His voice was one of the scratchiest I've ever heard. It was cool. My favorite line was, "what do you want?" he said it in such a way if you walked up to him.

Oblivion was alright, Shivering Isles was waaaaaaay better. I hope in this new one they ditch the leveling system, creepy plastic people, and don't **** the lore up again.

They should purchase the Dunia engine for Elder Scrolls 5, I currently prefer that engine over the GamebryoX they are using

Yeah but that has some imagination to it, and I accept it. For the nuclear blast thing they just as easily could've done it like this: "okay let's put 100000 dudes with rocket launchers aiming at Indy, and they all shoot at him at the same time, but he survives. Because he's Indy. Also add in some prairie dogs to laugh at that."

1. It's going to be an MMO. Everything is now a days.

2. I'm afraid it's going to be "Oblivion 2" and not "TES V"

3. For gods sake, use a different engine.

Bethesda HQ will get firebombed by angry TES fans if it ever goes that route.

Warcraft and Warhammer crap, sure, but not my Tamriel.

Why. It will never happen.

Mutley

They've always stood strong about not doing any multiplayer features, they always claim they want to provide the "best singleplayer experience possible".

To be fair, I do think Beth have a bit of a niche at what they do, Singleplayer RPG wise.

Bethesda would never be stupid enough to ruin the formula that they already have by turning The Elder Scrolls into an MMO. They would lose most of their consumer base. I do hope they use a new engine though. I can definitely see it becoming Oblivion 2.

VirusType2
02-11-2008, 01:26 PM
Speaking of game engines: I think they are best to make the decision of what engine to use.

A huge advantage goes to using an engine they can probably work with in their sleep after making Oblivion, something like 8 different expansion downloads, including expansion of the year 'Shivering Isles', and not to mention the experience gained from Fallout 3 which used that engine.

With a new engine, it would just be new (different) bugs, new hardware requirements, new setbacks. I think it would take a while to familiarize themselves, translating into a game that comes out a year or more later.

I think it's a good engine that is capable of more than one might think. It can use higher resolution textures no problem, for example. There were mods that did that for Oblivion.

I would like to see a completely different part of the world. And the Oblivion gate thing was overdone and uninteresting, for the most part, and I won't miss it. A completely new storyline is in order, I should expect.

I hope it's not an MMO. I hate MMOs. So lame and lifeless.

"You are the 38th online adventurer to find the <generic run-of-the-mill grail> today!"

/facepalm

If they just get most if not all of the bugs out that Oblivion had, I'd be happy. Also, make more powerful spells look more powerful and higher swordsmanship/melee skills look more badass.
The only major gripe I had with Oblivion's gameplay really. (when it worked that is)

Well ... I hated Oblivion, but Fallout 3 is a really damn good game. They fixed most of what I disliked and improved in a lot of other areas too. If it had decent FPS gameplay outside of VATS ... now that'd be a truly incredible game.

My point is that I have quite a bit more faith in them now and as long as they don't forget the lessons of Fallout 3 and continue to improve then it will also be a damn good game.

However if the scaling system returns I just won't ****ing play it. Ruined Oblivion.

It's times like these why I'm reminded why PC versions of many games are better. :smoking:

It's good to have a modding community to fix the mistakes devs often make these days.
The tradeoff though is all the frustration and headaches trying to get games like Oblivion to run properly without crashing every 10-15 minutes.

Francesco's or Oscuro's mod easily addressed the leveling issues I had with Oblivion. Well, not "easily", but it fixes them anyways.

I can definitely see it becoming Oblivion 2.Bethesda ruined the original formula with Oblivion, at least to original fans like myself they did, I loved Arena, Daggerfall and Morrowind, but I found Oblivion without mods to be very average.

To me Oblivion was an open-ended hack'n'slash with RPG elements, rather than a real RPG ala Daggerfall or Morrowind..

Also, what I don't like about Francescos or Oscuros Oblivion mods is that they add new enemies etc that don't make sense lorewise, I'd like for a removal of scaling mod that didn't add new enemies etc or only add new enemies that are lore-accurate.

The modding community is the only thing that really made it into a great game for me. Here's hoping it won't have to be that way next time around.
