I feel I'm repeating myself when I usually reply to these threads with ''99% of Modest Mouse songs''
The one song that really means something to me, and usually always manages to make me well up, is Moonpies for Misfits by Hot Water Music. It reminds me of one of my closest friends who was one of the main reasons I got through High School.

Sigur Ros - Fljotavik
It has brought tears to my eyes more times than every other song I've ever heard combined, including other Sigur Ros songs. I'm talking practically 100% of the time. It is really unbelievably beautiful.

Mothers of the Disappeared by U2. If you know what they're singing about, it's f*cking agonizing to listen to. I won't even listen anymore.
Most beautiful? The opening flute solo from Maurice Ravel's Bol?ro, but it has to be from the 1962 recital by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. All the Youtube videos of this piece I've watched don't seem to take this seriously... they're just playing classical flute. (Maybe it's the conductor's take?) The flute from the piece I'm referring to is like that dance scene from the Fisher King... it's the sort of thing that plays in your head when you come upon a beautiful woman.

I posted all these song title in another thread about sad songs:
How To save A life - The Fray
Winter - Joshua Radin
Wires - Athlete
Set Fire To the Third Bar - Snow Patrol
Bedshaped - Keane
Cancer - My Chemical Romance
My Immortal - Evanescence
Butterflies and Hurricanes - Muse
There's a whole load more that i could mention. I'm actually putting a compilation album of all the sad, emotional songs i like: I call it Kat's Sad Songs Volume 2 (I made another one but now I'm remaking it because I've got a lot more songs to add now).
These aren't really songs but there are a few tracks on the Doctor Who soundtrack albums that make me a bit teary: Father's Day, The Lone Dalek and Doomsday from the series one and two album, and Boe from the series three album.
Another couple i forgot to add are Fix You and The Scientist, both by Coldplay.
Oh, and another Joshua Radin one: Closer.
Remembered another: A Bad Dream by Keane.
I've written up a track listing for my sad songs album and I've included certain tracks like Biffy Clyro Christopher's River, Death Cab for Cutie Transatalanticism, Lostprophets 4am Forever and Limp Bizkit Lonely Word and Behind Blue Eyes. I've got 46 tracks listed, and I intend to add some Genesis, so there I too many tracks for me to post the whole track-list!!!
If I could add Sigur Ros Untitled #1 to the track-list then I certainly would because that one is so sad!! :(

Also i'm glad people are mentioning LOTR music. It is some of my all time favourite film music. SO beautiful. One of my favourite songs, though, from LOTR is not strictly speaking a piece of music from the film, but a song written for it: Into the West sung by Annie Lennox.

yeah, definitely some incredible music. i'm a fan of music for nitrous oxide, though it's hard to pick favorites when every piece is so good. that dead texan release i played for ages, and still haven't tired of it.
i do love the apestaartje label for ambient music, and mountains have certainly moved me every bit as much as SOTL with their self-titled.
TheAntipop

I don't listen to much ambient stuff anymore. In a way, it became a little like post-rock to me - in desperate need of something unique to come along and give it a swift kick up the arse, but not so much as ambient is a whole different kettle of fish and I can listen to it far more freely than generic instrumental post-something band 00193.
Another really sad song that I just this second thought up is Oxbow - A Winner Every Time. Eugene has one hell of a mournfully distraught voice. I'd hate to see the look of that guys vocal cords because they must be shot to shit.

29-09-2008, 07:12 AM
i agree, there's loads of crap ambient out there. i figure the problem is ambient is a tough thing to make, perhaps only because it's too easy to make poorly. anyone can throw some pad drones together, toss in some spacey shit, etc. perhaps that's what i find so addicting about it though, when an artist does ambient right, it can move you in a way most music can not.
there's always the risk of crossing into new-age territory too.
to relate ambient back to the topic, some of the most saddening pieces of music i've known were beatless and wordless.

Got some Torchwood music for you now.
To start off with there's this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd-j_S1Rd6I&feature=related
This track is called The Death of Dr. Owen Harper. (The title's in spoiler tags because any Torchwood fan on here who has not seen Reset will get the ending spoiled for them).
I Believe In Him:

I don't know which episode this is from but it's a nice piece of music.
Goodbyes:

Played near the end of Exit Wounds, definitely the saddest Torchwood episode.
(Track name's in spoiler tags) Death of Toshiko

Another track taken from Exit Wounds. The track title would ruin the ending for people who haven't seen Exit Wounds.

<3
Goz Quarter really tugs at me in a way I can't quite understand. The beat is pretty standard Autechre circa 1997, and the melody isn't particularly extravagant. But it's still so... sad. The synths at the end sound like they're wailing.

I was waiting for someone to post that! I heard that song being played on one of those Children In Need or Comic Relief videos, you know, where they show you what your money does to help, and the video was so emotional I was holding back tears. Ever since then whenever I hear that song my eyes well up.

It's not on an album... was from their DVD.
There's some pretty good live recordings of it though: ftp://freebox.mistur.org/
Go to Concerts -> 2003 -> Hammersmith Apollo -> sigurros2003-02-12d2t05.shn
Might need a plugin to play Shorten (shn) files.
Or there's an mp3 of a slightly different version of the song from the 9:30 Club show (03.19.03) (ftp://freebox.mistur.org/Concerts/2003/9%2030%20Club%20-%20Washington%20DC%20USA%20-%2003.19.03%20%5BRating%206%5D/11-%20gitardjamm%203.19.03.mp3).
There's also a full version of the Odin's Raven Magic concert (ftp://freebox.mistur.org/Concerts/2002/Barbican%20Hall%20-%20London%20-%2021.04.02%20-%20Odin%27s%20Raven%20Magic%20%5BRating%209%5D) if you're interested in that.

Agreed. It's absolutely impossible for me to watch that with dry eyes. Also, an interesting thing to note is at the end when they're sat in the bar you can tell that when Carla is crying they are genuine, real life tears. It's more like Judy (the actress) is crying rather than Carla. I thought that was rather interesting.

Godspeed -- Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. A very moving song about war.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa8-h7GmtWk
Its January 1970, do you remember me
You put me on a boat across the sea, in the name of victory
But much to my surprised when I arrived
There was no welcoming committee
Instead there was a man for me to kill, and now I see all this too real
Then I saw him standing with a bayonet
And as I ran towards him he hardly broke a sweat
When I took his life he fell to his knees
And as his eyes began to fade he whispered softly
Godspeed this letter, away from here
I've sealed it with my tears, and stomped it with my fists
And godspeed this letter, away from you
My work down here is through
I'm on my way to better days and so are you
I'm in his pocket that I saw the picture of his children and his family
And I began to realize this person I despised, in actuality
Was not much different from myself
we probably could have taught each other many things
And now I know its much too late although I couldn't hesitate
I checked his gun, and his chamber was empty
Then I saw him standing with a bayonet
and as I ran towards him he hardly broke a sweat
When I took his life he fell to his knees
And as his eyes began to fade he whispered softly
Godspeed this letter, away from here
I've sealed it with my tears, and stomped it with my fists
And godspeed this letter, away from you
My work down here is through
I'm on my way to better days and so are you
o-ho
We know not what we've done
And o-ho
We know not what we've done
Godspeed this letter, away from here
I've sealed it with my tears, and stomped it with my fists
And godspeed this letter, away from you
My work down here is through
I'm on my way to better days
