So who hear uses headphones, and what type do they use?

I'd been using some Apex studio monitors for a while, but they aren't very comfortable if used for more than an hour or so, despite sounding quite good. I grabbed some Sennheiser HD 415s today, and I'm quite impressed. They aren't flat EQ, but for music and games it really doesn't matter. I won't be mixing/etc. with these, that's for sure. Lots of dynamic range, good volume, and they're incredibly nice to wear, like soft earmuffs. To be honest, I wanted the HD 485s instead, but I don't think that anyone has them anymore these days. I went to about five or six stores and just could not find any.

I wouldn't recommend mixing with _any_ headphones, unless you're specifically trying to get the best stereo shaping.

Sometime back when I was still looking at DJ headphones I read that the Audio Technica a900s were the most balanced (in terms of product, not eq), so if I ever find I need to burn another $200 on headphones, I'll get those.

Atm I have the non-boosted Etymotic Er6s, which are great for a balanced EQ, but end up sounding fairly tinny for most albums. In retrospect I should have got the bass/mid boosted Er6is, which are better for mp3 listening (my main use of them). In terms of production use, they're great for hearing small details, especially reverb decay.

Go to walmart and get KOSS muffs. They're amazing. I use them while I'm playing my drums and they block out a lot of the noise. Try em' out. I also like the KOSS earbuds. they have custom fits and have volume control so that you can adjust the volume perfectly so that you are comfortable.

Some cheap-ish Altec Lansing ones. They were fine until they started falling apart, like every damn pair of headphones I buy invariably does. Firstly the earpieces fell out (yep, both of them) because the plastic parts holding them in were weak as shit, and now the volume dial is splitting open. Had them less than a year and the shop won't take it back. Oh, also the mic doesn't work because I don't know why.

But uhh, besides that, they're good I guess. I need to invest in a proper set...

In my experience, KOSS makes nothing but cheap shit that sounds awful and falls apart in a month. Maybe they've changed, but next to something like Sennheiser or AKG they're a joke.

It shouldn't fall apart if you take care of it. :)

You get what you pay for though. if you get their $5 headphones (the classic style ones) they're definately going to fall apart. Their $20 earmuffs, however, are pretty nice. The last pair I had broke, but i had it for about 6 months before that, and it had taken some blows from drumsticks while I was going nuts and playing. They're pretty durable. :)

I've been doing some music creation on my laptop. The built in speaker is quite horrible, so I've been using some Phillips earbud headphones that are clear, and sound pretty decent for my MP3 player, but don't have deep bass - like at all.

For music production they aren't going to cut it. It just comes out kinda like a rattle. I need something really compact and lightweight and around $35 or less.

Buy some studio monitors if you're going to be mixing music. Make sure they have a flat EQ and completely uncoloured sound.

I've dropped mine over a hundred times and they've still gone strong. The cords been mangiled pretty intense to and that microphone that comes with it had the wire shielding(?) shredded to bits exposing the wire at a few places, but a bit of tape fixed that and it still works like a charm.

Lucky I guess. I'm still using the mic with another set of headphones. I was unsure about the microphone when I first bought it, but now I prefer it to attached mics.
