Capcom has announced a March 12, 2009 release date for Resident Evil 5 in Japan and March 13, 2009 date for North America and Europe at Microsoft's E3 press conference. Also announced was the fact that the game will feature online cooperative play. Players will be able to hop-in-and-out to play. The cooperative mode will allow teams to play together to do moves that you couldn't get past by yourself.

Not making fun of Digi, but the IGN article and whoever edits them, it clearly reads the Capcom announced March 12 2009 in Japan and March 13 2008 in North America/Europe.

The video you linked is massively compressed. Take a look at the official trailer:

Both the visuals and animations are stunning.

Wow what a piece of crap. It's just like RE4 except in Africa with online coop.

Graphics aren't as good as I thought they would be, it does make a wii port seem more possible though, which is good because the RE4 wii controls were made of win :)

RE4 was a huge success and incredibly well received. Why would Capcom change such a winning formula? Co-op makes it so much better.

Again, do not go by the video that Jimbo linked, it's compressed to all hell and makes the game look like shit. Take a look at the trailer I linked. That's what the game will actually look like. The Wii has no chance in hell of running this.

I think it's funny that people are calling this "crap" even though Resident Evil 4 is widely considered to be one of the best games ever.

That said, I do sort of get the impression of copy-and-paste, but hey, no problem, the game's still in development, and there's nothing wrong with reusing assets. I think the co-op play might be a little shoehorned in, because Resident Evil is still meant to be a bit of a survival horror type game, and tension in Resident Evil 4 is quite high despite the action elements. Having a buddy along for the ride the whole time... is that going to make it too silly and action-oriented, I wonder?

So what? By that logic, I find it funny you calling most of the Rock Band 2 playlist ''mostly shit'' when most of the bands on the playlist are widely considered to be great bands. :P Note: because so many people say it's this and that doesn't make it good or bad.

I, for one, am not a fan of Resident Evil 4 (I'm actually annoyed that I can't enjoy it even though I've tried three times now) and I'm pretty underwhelmed by the Resi 5 videos.

Does anyone else just really really wish Capcom would make RE titles first-person shooters? I think I remember them trying this once before, but everytime I've played RE4, and now after seeing the RE5 trailer, I could really see both games being wonderful FPS titles. It's not that I hate the shoulder-cam, I've just always had an FPS fetish as most of us here do.

Considered one of the best by who? I loved playing RE4 but good god there are some serious flaws in that game. The character controls are still terrible, overuse of inventory and I'll bet there are pornos with better plots. That said, I really enjoyed my time (re)playing it. But it's a far cry from being considered one of the best games ever.

I do somewhat agree with your comment about coop ruining part of the RE atmosphere though. To be fair, the direction they're taking the games really takes away any of the 'fear' factor that previous RE's had. However, I think most logical people will finish the game on single player first to enjoy the game the way it's meant to be played before playing coop. In which case, the coop will help add-on extra replayability and that's awesome in my book.

As for having a buddy making the more action orientated... well, if RE4 is anything to go by, the series has already shifted from survival-horror into a full fledged action game.

I just watched the game demo on IGN. It's alright, but not awe-inspiring. None of the choppiness in the trailer showed up in the demo, thankfully. It looks exactly like Resident Evil 4, just prettier, and instead of Chainsaw Guy, it has Giant Axe Guy who can smash down walls. The game will be played entirely in co-op, which sucks ass because it ruins a lot of the tension the game has, but at least the AI partner looks pretty good and you can give her context-sensitive commands.

Also, I think it's funny how Capcom responded to the whole KILLING BLACK PEOPLE thing by putting white zombies in the game, yet nobody has complained about the incredibly stereotypical supermodel looks of the game's main characters (Chris is incredibly well-built and the female basically looks like an oiled-up porn star), not to mention the whole delegating-the-female-to-the-companion-role-rather-than-featuring-her-as-a-playable-character-thing. Oh well!

Looks like a great game of course, but couple things that annoyed me.

the enemies had no sense of urgency or formidably. Maybe this was easy mode, where the enemies practically pose for you. They need to borrow a page from Condemned: criminal origins, and make the enemies sneaky, intelligent, and vicious.

They need to change smashing barrels open with a combat knife to kicking them open, like you do to the doors. Or perhaps a pistol whip/rifle butt. It doesn't even make any sense to use a knife and it looks ridiculous IMO.

the control still seems clunky as it was on every RE game. I look forward to the day that in a Resident Evil game, you will be able to aim any direction while walking any direction.

Takeuchi commented that he recently played "Half-Life 2," and he was impressed by how the game's storyline progressed without the need for the player to raise any conditional flags in the game. While he didn't say that he'll take an identical approach, he did say that RE5 is a "next-generation game" and should reflect that in its gameplay. In addition, Takeuchi emphasized he doesn't want RE5 to be too linear, where all that the user does is clear a stage, watch a cutscene, and then follow instructions to go to the next stage.

Neat trailer, the fact that there's gold probably means there's a similar system to buy weapons / upgrades. Whether it's an actual creepy merchant though, well... who knows.

Two things I noticed, I like how the weapon switching can be done on the fly now without going into those ridiculous RE4 menus. One thing I really don't like though is the fact that corpses still melt into the ground though.
