I just bought Stalker, but i hear it could do with some mods and patches before playing. So who better to ask the you hl2netters. Which are the better mods that will improve the game? And are there any limits to how many mods can be installed? Finally how scary would you say this game is? Is it like FEAR which was pretty creepy.

Don't go for the latest patch (1.05 or something?), because the majority of the mods don't work with that version. There are some community patches that simulate the 1.05 patch (without losing the mod functionality), if I recall correctly.

Float32 is a big must. It increases visual fidelity while often improving FPS. There are some other, more minor mods like "real weapon names" and "more stamina", but they're really just fixes for stuff that might peeve you ingame. After some time in the game I installed a "carry 200 kilograms" mod because I was getting sick of having to run to each town to move over my stuff to the next. And the loading screens sometimes took over a minute, so the time-lost overhead was gigantic lol

Ah, you could prolly take the 1.0005 patch, depends what mod you would like to play with ;)

OL2.0 (http://stalker.filefront.com/file/;89584) Oblivion Lost 2.0
I would definately recommend this mod, it was what the game was originally meant to be. As it was mentioned previously to ZT, i would play the vanilla through first before playing this mod. You'll love this mod.

Also, every mod/patch you could ever need is on the site.

the fun way to play stalker is to kill everyone you find

I installed Oblivion Lost a while ago. first time I played it I almost got motion sickness from how the guy runs (looked much worse than in Vanilla stalker).
I haven't touched Stalker since.

Play it Vanilla (but fully patched) then on a second play through consider mods.

Ok thanks guys, i'm gotta use the Float32 mod as it will help my FPS. I'll also use the mod that allows me to carry more stuff, as that will drive me mad having to go back to leave stuff. Then I'll use the Oblivion Lost mod on my second play though.

Stick to 1.004 for patches. There are loads of 'fix' mods on the Stalker section at Filefront. Just look for the ones that are made to fix the game while leaving the story intact. The mods that 'beautify' the game are pretty nice, but it can be tricky to mix and match them, but there'll usually be a mod bundled with a good batch of fixes. Once you've played the vanilla game, go crazy. I'd be lying if I said that I played Half Life more than Stalker.

When I patched to 1.005 and 1.006 the game crashed every time I loaded a save game. I'd recommend staying with 1.004.

Do you have to start again after patching? You have to after installation of some particular mods though

I'm going to buy this game today. It's only fifteen bucks with the coupon I've got, and I could use a new game to keep me occupied. Better start downloading.

EDIT: So I've downloaded and installed the Float32 mod, but honestly I'm not entirely sure what it does. Anyone got any hints? It did improve my performance but I don't notice much of a difference in image quality.

When playing Oblivion Lost, I crash everytime I try looting a bandit.
