View Full Version : Games that you wish could be remade verbatim

ITT, list games that were a blast to play then, and still are now, but could use a fresh coat of paint.
For me, it's Age of Empires I and II. I just played a game of II and to this day it is still a blast to play. Part of the experience is the nostalgia, but regardless, they are still fun and the amount of fun I've had with them has never been matched by another game.
What is it for you?

Personally and no offense to BM:S but I'd of loved to see Valve actually properly remake HL using the Source engine. I know it's not going to happen, and I'm not too sad about it, but they'd of been able to get the right voice actors in for the various roles and it would of tied up nicely, with the sequel. A lot of people who never played the original simply won't play it because it looks so awful these days (which is a pity).
Deus Ex. Great game and it still is, but again a complete refit would be fantastic. When it first came out I was really excited for the future of the FPS experience, DX hinted at a better way, one that moved away from the linear corridor shooters of old. I'd say double up and do the sequel at the same time as well. I'd dump the Unreal engine in favour of Source because it does a much better job of characterization.
System Shock 2. I never quite finished it because it scared the bejesus out of me, but it did so much right that despite the release of Bioshock, it's still worthy of a complete remake with a better more upto date game engine. Yes I'm aware of the modifications, but the dark engine had it day a long time back.
I'm sure there are many others that I could reel off, but I'd put those 3 head and shoulders above the rest.
I know it's a bit of a fun exercise to do this, but a big part of me would really like to see rebuilds happen some where down the road. There are a lot of great games out there that deserve the attention. Certainly not an easy project to carry out, but I think there's scope for a development house to start doing something like that and actually turn a profit on it. Naturally the original developers should still receive their royalties as well (50/50 split perhaps).

If that were the case, then BF1942 would look as good graphically as BF2.
Or there'd be mods making it look as good as BF2 out by now.
Iirc, BF2's on a Refractor 2 engine while BF1942's on the Refractor 1 engine.
But, I don't really know anything technical about game engines.

All the old Lucasarts space flight sims.
Deus Ex, System Shock 2 and Thief 2 are all games that all really worked to create unique atmosphers; I think they'd benefit more than any other titles were they do be remade. It wouldn't just be a simple graphics update in their case; it'd really bring their worlds to life with a level of vibrancy the old technology couldn't muster.

you say that like any of those games (excluding TFTD) stand anywhere near the first xcom. their all poor imitations when judged against the first two. (ufo defense and tftd)
and while ET is similar to the original it's still lightyears away. (moves a bit closer with some mods)

I hope Square-Enix continue with their near-verbatim Final Fantasy DS remake series and do Final Fantasy V and VI. Sure, they're not the best graphics of the day, but they're complex enough for a portable system and a good way of revisiting old classics that are a little ugly.
It would be cool if some of the best Platform games of yesteryear - the Super Marios and Sonic the Hedgehogs particularly - were done over (still in 2D) with 1080 worthy sprites and super-detailed backgrounds. The games would remain essentially identical, just with visuals that look like they came from an animated movie. I suppose the biggest problem with this is that Nintendo haven't put a high-def console out, but they're no strangers to endlessly porting their old properties, so I wouldn't put the whole idea above them.
Relic should use their recently reacquired rights and remake Homeworld to reintroduce the series and... well, to apologise for Homeworld 2 I suppose. Thing is, it's a game that doesn't look that bad anyway, and its one game that wouldn't suffer from a few additions here and there Reintroduce the other pirate race from their early story drafts (Starfish Motherships!) perhaps incorporate the awesome Megalith ideas that got dropped from Homeworld 2 when development got rushed through and you'd have one hell of remake, though one that isn't strictly 'verbatim'.

How I wish that someone could find the way to make modern games with the appeal of traditional turn based RPGs like Ultima, Fallout and so on. I refuse to think that good graphics and powerful machines have to necessarily kill a genre and turn everything into action-something. Formulas can change, graphics can go 3D, no problem with that, but the gameplay should remain the same.

But, I don't really know anything technical about game engines.
That's not really how it works; the same engine doesn't equal the same graphics, BF2 is running different shaders for example. And since the source-code for the engine isn't public, the graphics can't be updated by modders.
All PC Battlefield games are built on the Refractor 2 engine---Codename: Eagle was built on Refractor 1.
By the way, Starcraft's graphics are perfect as they are; a remake could only hurt.

What makes you think that? They've already remade III and IV for the DS, why is it unlikely that they'll keep going with the Nintendo series?I meant to specify a current gen console remake of FF VI (the American SNES FF III) with revamped graphics, not a handheld remake. :p
I thought twice about it though, and now that I think about it, I really don't want a remake after all. FFVII has already been beat to death what with all the movies, spin-offs etc. That FF is completely ruined thanks to mainstream popularity. :P I'm still busy trying to wipe all the vomit off of poor Aeris' boots. Let her rest in peace already. :(
If Square/Enix really wanted to capitalize on FFVII's popularity, they should have just done what the fans wanted in the first place and just made a remake of the original game.

When hasn't Final Fantasy been a 'mainstream' series?. IMO, It was 'killed' by Square-Enix getting wise on how to make shitloads of money off of it after having tried something brave and completely rubbish with The Spirits Within.

I don't think people were against the idea of an FF VII Sequel. In fact, once X-2 arrived, people naturally looked towards the most popular installment and wanted a continuation, probably more than they ever wanted a remake. Shame everything they've churned out as a sequel has blown chunks.

X-2 is pretty fun, tbh.

yea, X is actually the only one I've completed.
I've got like...all of them. My roommate gave me all his FF cd's because he said I "had to play them!!" So of course I tried to play VII...and couldn't because I got bored. And now I have 2 stacks of like 28 cd's on my desk.

You may disagree but i always thought dirge of cerberus was really good. Alright, so the gameplay wasn't the greatest but it was really enjoyable and the story was excellent. So as sequels go, i thought they did well with that one.
I don't agree that any of the final fantasy games should be remade, especially VII because there is always the possibility that they may mess up what originally made them so appealing for everyone in the first place.
One game i wouldn't mind being updated is star wars: TIE fighter. I always had loads of fun with that game.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.
Hell yeah! In fact I think I might install it and give it another spin.
An updated version or sequel would be awesome... *drools at the thought of SMAC with updated graphics and Civ4's interface and multiplayer improvements*
Pity this (http://apolyton.net/forums/showthread.php?threadid=160146) mod didn't take off because it looks great. But it was a bit ambitious to remake a entire game as a mod (cough BM:S cough).
