Steam will still not let me play my games - please help

I have been having this problem ages now and it seems everything I keep doing never works. Can somebody please give me a list of things I can do to get steam to play my games. I will go over each thing to see if it will work.

Ok what exactly is happing. Is Steam giving an Error?, like "This game is currently unavailable". Or is it launching the game but the game doesn't run. There are plenty of reasons why it might not be working if you give some more info it might help.

Well when I click on a game (lke Half-Life 2) it comes up preparing to launch Half-Life 2. But then it comes of but it doesnt bring me on. It doesnt come up any error messages.

Right-click on HL2 in steam, go to properties, click on "Set launch Properties" and write -window (or possibly -windowed I'm not sure) in the field. Done.

that's not the reason for the window mode - if the application does not launch, an error window will be generated that would help diagnose the problem
make sure you did exactly what AJ said

I have just found out a few minutes ago that the steam games are not the only games that dont play on my computer. Today I bought Battlefield 2 and after installing it, I clicked on the icon to play it. But it doesnt bring me on. So I installed another one of my games, and that wont bring me on as well. Does anyone know what the problem might be.

Are you running Vista? Chances are that you need to "allow" any of Steams applications before they will run.

This will be through either a pop-up message or through the Windows firewall options.

You're being incredibly vague. That's like me asking you why my oven won't work. You have no clue what my oven looks like, you have no clue how my oven works, and even if you did, there are a million things that could be wrong with my oven.

So how about you contemplate what information might be helpful about my oven, then provide similar information about your computer and games so that we may be able to help you.

Do people only read the first post in a thread these days? If you want help you have got to help us. You don't ring the doctor and only say 2 words - 'I'm sick' and expect a cure ... give a little more information, pc specs, usage history, any attempted/failed fixes ...

I don't know what else there is to tell. I load steam, click on say Half-Life 2 the box pops up and says preparing to launch Half-Life 2 then disappears and nothing happens. Nothing else of note occurs.

I think I recognized the problem but I'm still not sure how t fix it. I tried to load half life 1 and it let me but it wouldn't let me run it on open gl. For some reason my computer(or steam) isn't recognizing my graphics card. Any suggestions?

I am taking my computer to PC World to get it checked. They know more about computers than I do. It is kinda self explained, like what LandStander was saying. You click on it, comes up prreparing to launch Half-Life 2, comes of but doesnt bring you onto the game. I will be throwing myself a HUGE party when this is fixed. I am missing Garry's mod so much and all my games.

I went to pc world and told them the problem. They told me to hand the computer in tommorow and they will update my drivers. Hopefully that should work. Please cross your fingers for me.

Guess what everyone. Garry's mod is working again. I got my drivers updated. I would have posted this yesturday but I was too busy playing Gmod. I just want to say thanks to everyone for helping me, supporting me, giving me ideas and so on. I just want to say thank you, it was a real help. So again, thank you. :cheese:
