I figured out how to play, no dl-ing shit necessary. (well you have to have the game installed)

Open the "hosts" file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
and add "72.167.39.116 www.audio-surf.com" without quotes on its own line at the bottom.

edit: oh shit-peas, I guess it doesn't work after all, wtf.

Edit2: ok so apparantly you need a fresh copy of the beta and don't install updates... trying this now

The whole app is screwed for me. First of all it's rather unresponsive for about a minute after I launch it. Then, I can't choose my music tracks - when I point the cursor at the directories, only the top one gets highlighted and clicking does nothing anyway. I can choose the streaming radio, but when I start the game, the shuttle (w/e that is) stays at the beginning of the track with a "respawning" sign underneath it, despite the music playing and the tutorial going on about me enjoying the ride for 30 seconds, then supposedly seeing some blocks etc., as if I was actually progressing along the track.

So far, fail :|

Well, I can't play because it says the beat version has expired or I don't have an internet connection, I do and I also did not perform the update for the thing.

Also, looking at Vegeta's step-by-step. What do I do to the host file to make it so I can actually save changes that I do? I opened it with notepad and it just saves it as a notepad file.

I have no idea why you're wasting time speculating when you can actually play it or watch a video...

Even if you could, woop-dee-****ing-doo, this is an actual game that is very well made with lots of cool features like a score system and being able to compare scores online.

So, you can log in but you can't compare scores online, I think the host file thing basically emulates your own server.

However, it seems /v/ has a private server set up so they can post and compare their scores on that. I haven't read through the whole 1000+ thread to see how to access it though.

Edit: Lawdy lawd, ok apparantly that IP I said to put in your hosts file IS the private server. If you are using that, you need to make a new account the first time you play on it. New server = new account. This server is provided by Something Awful, and I have no idea how it works exactly, but I think if you're using it you are able to compare scores with other people who are using it.

We could test by adding friends, I'm Veggies on the new server. If you're using the ip I said in the hosts file, post your username.

Apparently their servers went off. When I try to load the game it checks online if audio-surf.com is up or something. When I disconnect my internet, i can load the game but whenever i try to play it says I need an active connection for the beta or the beta is expired. (My host file is modified like it should)

Download this. I've virus-scanned it and it's clean. It's a tiny .exe file that runs a dummy Audiosurf server, and a set of instructions on what to add to your hosts file. Runs perfectly fine for me now :D

Did you get the .rar that was posted? There are 3 lines you have to put in the hosts file (and erase the old one) And you have to run audiosurfboard. Read the readme.

Check the updater.ini file in your Audiosurf folder. Make sure the app version is either 1 or 2. If it's 3, set it to 2 and delete patchfile.zip from the Audiosurf folder.

Here's the thing, in my opinion....

This game is a whole lot of fun... But not for very long.

The problem is that it is very, very narrow. The only real range is the different classes, and even that doesn't offer much.
This game is by no means bad, just rather simplistic. Sure, it's fun to race your favourite songs, but can you see yourself doing it for more than, say a week?

Depends on the song style. I'm still not sure what type of songs have them, but it seems to be the ones that have long extended sequences on roughly the same... uh... wavelength, I think it is? Amplitude? I unno.

The corkscrews have to due with panning and phase differences. If its panned all the way right it will make a corkscrew to the right, or left. The only time I've ever had a vertical corkscrew was on a fill that had a huge phaser effect on it.
