Portal startup

Once i start portal it goes to the loading screen and it does not ever load eventually it exits and does not show an error message once it exits

Tried updating DirectX and your graphics card drivers? I couldn't find anything specific on Steam support but you might want to try their general crash help page (http://support.steampowered.com/cgi-bin/steampowered.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=197) if that doesn't help.
