View Full Version : I've got a game, which I can't play...

Over 2 years ago (whenever it came out), I bought Half-Life 2. Unfortunately, as I was like 15 at the time, still under my parents' juristiction and using their pc, my dad registered his own account and registered the game to this. Two years on and I've got my own sexeh pc, ie. the ability to run it, and my own steam account.
The problem lies with the fact while I have an unregistered copy of Half-Life 2 in with the Orange Box, CSS doesn't come with it, which means anytime I want to play css I have to sign into my dad's account (which he doesn't use, as he doesn't a) own the game, and b) have the ability to play it... and c) play any games like ever) which of course I do not want to do. I've already asked Steam, and they ask for a receipt from within 90 days, which of course I don't own, as I bought it two years ago. I do own the box, and sent them a copy of the registration code, but they wanted a receipt.
I'm curious as to whether any of you have a solution as to how to solve this problem, without my having to result to purchasing Counter Strike again.
Oh, and because it's necessary, I need to rant about Steam, an idea I used to think ingenious, now I merely consider irritating...
I HAVE A BLOODY GAME, WHICH I PURCHASED WITH MY OWN MONEY, THAT I CAN'T EVEN PLAY, AND IS REGISTERED TO AN ACCOUNT I DON'T EVEN TECHNICALLY OWN, AND ARGGHH!!!
I knew CAPS would serve a useful purpose eventually.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Once a registered game, always a registered game.

Not true. You can get it un-tied from your dad's account and registered to yours.

You used to be able to. Just read they stopped it about a year ago.
You had to send in scans of receipts etc.

Yeah, you can, you send in the receipt within the past 90 days and a picture of the key, and they'd do it. But my receipts not within the past 90 days.

Yeah... probably... although, having never played Team Fortress Classic (have no idea why) I was never looking forward to it like everyone else. It seems like a good game, but I really bought the Orange Box for Episode One, Episode 2 and Portal (Half-Life 2 again was a bonus).
No doubt I'll enjoy it when I get around to playing it.
And doesn't anyone play css anymore...?

I'm not sure I see the problem here. It seems to be implied from your post that you can play the game, it just requires that you log in as different user each time you want to do so. Is typing in log-in details really so hard that you'd go and buy a new copy of it? How often do you play several different games in a single sitting, making you frustrated to change accounts?

I wouldn't know. The lack of internet seems to hide me from the number of servers there are on css. I wonder why that is...
and *shrugs* everyone seems to be playing tf2 nowadays
Oh, and I play several different games in one sitting. At the moment it's no problem as both games are on the same account. The problem is, the account's my dads. For a start, I'm not supposed to be using it at all, and secondly, well, it's not my own.

But the game was yours, right? Why would he object?

Partly because he doesn't know I'm using it. And partly because I'm not supposed to know the password. In effect, I'm hacking his account. You'd think Steam have a problem with it, but they sent me his account details and even changed his account email address to mine. How retarded is that...??

Answer is fairly simple.
Either come to terms with having to switch accounts or chose to spend around $20 of your own money on another copy.

Regarding to your original question, you can indeed move your game to another account by paying 10 bucks and giving a scan of the receipt. I'd just buy it again tbh and get your dad hooked on CSS :p
