new steam update...most notably the "trickle update" was added

http://www.steampowered.com/index.php?area=news

A Steam update has just been released. The next time you restart Steam, the update will take effect. Here are the details on what is included:
Added support for "trickle update", which will allow updates to games to be delivered over time before they are activated.
Optimizations in Steam targeted at reducing CPU and memory load on some systems.
Progress dialog always shows now during startup.
Fixed handling of cache fingerprint mismatch on reconnect
Fixed case which would cause the preloader ignoring errors to send extra messages to the Steam servers.
Fixed bug in Steam that would cause cache to be validated too often when Steam started. This would cause hard drive thrashing.
Fixed a potential lockup case and access violation case in Steam.

======================
well they finally added what gabe told spitcodfry way back when would be the way hl2 would be delivered to hl2 steam preorder customers....one more thing out of the way of hl2's release

When I saw the subject line I thought "ahh so thats what their going to be calling the terrible speeds for updating on steam when everyone is forced to use it"

Atleast they fixed the HDD thrashing, I think everyone hated that

heh...yea...new bug added to cs...the riot shield is still there!! i know it's off topic, but i still believe the riot sheild was added to make people stop playing cs and start getting interested in hl2, etc.

I don't want to say something stupid.. but could this see the release of small parts of hl2 being trickled sooner rather than later? Is this the final piece in the jigsaw for Valve to give the go ahead? Many people seem to think so.

The trickle-feature could might as well be for CS:CZ.

actually the preloading of HL2 could have been done before, they preloaded the movies to us, if you recall....

this "trickle update" simply allows them to do it slower, heh.

I like the sound of this update. It seems like they are taking care of the performance problems I have (long start-up time and hard drive trashing). The trickle feature also seem important if spitcodfry was correct in that they would trickle download hl2 during the launch week (whenever that is). This update feel like a stp in the right direction.

Maybe the first real test for them would be if they release CS:CZ over steam using these features. This would be the perfect warm-up for the chaost the a hl2 release would create.

I'm still holding out hope against hope that they will do a hl xmas release...

I like these updates...actually updating Steam! instead of CS,Dod or whatever. Actually looking to make Steam enjoyable (or at least not as many problems) for some of those compainers.
Wasn't the riot shield to be in CS:CZ first and then to make it compatible with CS servers they put it in 1.6? And can't you enable/disable it on the server?
Actually since Steam a lot of people have ditched HL engine games and gone with BF42 or new games (MP2) while waiting for HL2.

I take this as a signal that the release is going to be soon (next 2 months).

What's hard drive thrashing?

Anyupdates are good. Shows they are still working well.

AND for you people that insult steam. Sorry but it works for most people and it is a excelent idea. I love it personally. It helps me organise my games and makes updateing much easier in my opinion. No more searching for download sites where you have to sign up all the friggin time.

Also, CS1.6: Live with it. Nothing you say or do can change it.

First step towards the release of CZ --- If all goes well and steam is fit for content releases then we might get Half Life 2 before christmas...Lets hope CZ on steam goes well!

We're so getting this game, soon. And by soon - I mean before mid Dec.
I like this thread, there seems to be a lot of optimism, rather than "V41V3 1i3d, i7'5 d314y3d '7i1 4pri1, 0MG!!!"
Looks like we're going to be right, my friends. And Hl2 will be in hands, before we know it.

Well put it this way; If Condition Zero downloads dont kill steam we can expect Half Life 2 this year, otherwise were looking at April.

I think Hl2's, soon, release is the reason they're so quiet. We should hear something within 3 weeks. Depending on when it's released.

Well, steam isnt responding for me....
says its too busy, then freezes yay!
Cant handle an update, no way it will be able to handle HL2.

The update was just recalled. Apparently, there was some bug in the patch that causes the clients to download far more than what it needed. This caused massive bandwidth problems for the content servers.

I think Steam is going through it's "terrible twos" right now. It's very hard to control, and it can be frustrating at times. But with a little work and some patience, it will grow into something that we will all love and appreciate.

Keep working at it Valve, you'll get there eventually!

I don't want to get my hopes up, and neither should you guys...

But at least the environment around here is a little bit more cheerful. Instead of '0mfgz0rz, h4kz0rz' etc. etc.

I still have faith in Valve/Vivendi, so keep up the good work.

<< *Tempted to smile, nod head, and agree without doubt*

It's too hard to decide whether or not to be ****in' excited about this, or to just shrug it off like 95% of all the other "news" out there on Half-Life 2. :(

It would appear Valve is not particularly concerned about Steam's source code being in the wild.

Companies also go quiet before they go bankrupt. :dozey:
