When you spend 4 hours to get the first challenge with the least ammount of used portals, and actually use less then the physically possible way.

Yeah that's right. Took me 4 hours straight but I got it using 3 portals.

There's a camera on the wall there. Had to use an extra portal to get it off. That was my last chance to get up onto the last platform. Just jump on it enough while you spam the use-key on it, and it'll boost you up there eventually.

I only raised the first platform because I was thinking of a way to do it in 0 and got bored. Used the block to bounce the plasma ball at 90 degrees.

Absolutely, I used to play Defrag, a mod for quake3, that was specifically about trickjumping. I love this, and love the challenges of it. I feel the same addictive challenge in portal. That quick run is a good example. I love doing this stuff.

I've found that this method is only really handy in chamber 15, but it seems to be the only way to get golds there.

Oh for the tossing the block over between the door, you can make the block sideways and pick it up, lean it on the door and open/close the door to make it stuck. Much faster ;)

Tyguy, I do use fraps, sadly, but only because demos don't work well in portal. Fraps records it to an uncompressed avi at half resolution (even though I selected Full-size). When I have to cut footage, I load them into Vegas first, then save as uncompressed avi again. Then I use virtualdub to do the compression. I use x264 with a quantizer of 27, and LAME mp3 44.1khz/128kbps for audio. I can't be arsed to do MP4 compression when I take the original footage from crappy fraps and the quality is destroyed by youtube anyway.


And Wrath, I hate doing the steps challenges, but I saw someone get chamber 13 in 10 steps on youtube. Search for it.

Steps is pretty easy once you learn this trick: two portals, both on the floor. When you exit one, fire the right colour so you don't fall back in to the loop. When you hit the floor, you won't have taken any steps.

What this means is that you may use glitches which are in game but you may not use scripts that perform a certain task one couldn't do manually, for example the Half-Life in ~31 minutes speed run uses such a script and has been debated by the speed run community to be void because the script basically is an automatic optimal acceleration script for bunnyhopping which cuts away a few minutes from the time by itself. The script includes parts which are humanly impossible to perform and that's why such are not allowed.

Oh and I also doubt that the fastest way to get through that level by doing that glitch but then again I think the Brick is after lowest possible amount of portals used, not speed. Amirite? :)

I agree, and I'm not really proud of these records, but they're still fun to do. I tried to avoid having to use a programmable key of my G15 keyboard (same idea as AHK scripts), but the huge climb on chamber18 was pretty impossible.

The true best run of chamber 18 without exploits was in 8 portals, and I was really impressed by how clever it was.

I havent gone back to perfect my least step gold runs. But these are my scores for the chambers for the first time i got golds.

Chamber 13: 10
Chamber 14: 10
Chamber 15: 38 (found a trick to skip a lot of the map..ask me to explain more if you want...this one has got to be a world record for this chamber)
Chamber 16: 38 (lol, exact same amount as last chamber..weird)
Chamber 17: 149
Chamber 18: 84

You apparently have tried playing just about any fps game with 0,2x speed or so. It's _easy_, you can literally dodge bullets while meleeing everything down without taking a hit.

hmm, there are slowmo console commands, but then the challenge would say "CHEATER" at the end. So I don't think anyone has been using this.

I can't remember now, but I used them in the original HL2 to mess around. Google is your friend.

host_timescale 1
that's to make the game run at normal speed.
0.5 is for half speed
2 is for double speed.

sv_cheats need to be on.

The achievements are the same but by reasoning the time ones should have a few extra seconds to them. Skillful controller users can do quite insane things with those two analog sticks.
