What kind of items would you like to see (for Battle gameplay; think Mario Kart)?

Think traps, offensive weapons, defensive items, et cetera. Come on people, brainstorm.

We could have an offensive power up that causes Stern to drive up in a car, jump onto your enemie's vehicle and argue with him, causing control of your vehicle to switch over to an AI desperately trying to kill itself and end the pain.

The idea of a little CptStern head that acts like a rocket/turtle shell and destroys enemies has been noted. It'd be great if you heard a little "POLITICS!" or "CANADA!" mini-Stern shout when it was launched too.

I think a weapon/powerup that switches your position with a car you manually target in front of you would be neat. It would make for some interesting strategies, such as driving full speed towards a wall/cliff and switching with another car right before you reach the edge. :E

Shasta should be able to switch between the heavily fortified Shast truck and the stealthy, sneaky Stucco one.

How about a timebomb, which you can pass over to other cars in your vicinity. Or an instant ramp, to launch or flip people behind you (or an instant wall, to...well, you know). Or a postcount nullifier that puts you 1 lap behind on the rest. Or a newbie virus that reverses all the controls of your car. Or a Super Moderator powerup that makes you able to run over all the other cars, and stop them in the process. Or a rant powerup that gives you several ranting heads spinning violently around your car, throwing everything they hit off course.

I reckon that the majority of Mario Kart power-ups could be easily adapted into forum-themed weapons.

However also look to games like Twisted Metal, Cel Damage and Crash Team Racing for ideas.

All the other players? That'd be a super powerup then...it could be limited to just setting back one other player.

You could make a gravedigger-powerup out of that - a ghost-like projectile that starts haunting the nearest car, to grab it and slow it down.

Or what about a Ban powerup, which takes the form of a huge bat which, once fired properly, sends another player flying off the course. Maybe you could add a Permban option to that, that removes anyone from the race once they've been hit by the Ban bat a certain amount of times.
You could also introduce a Report Posting, laster guided projectile; the player that gets hit by it gets struck by lightning.
Or what about a Spam-posting, that leaves a puddle of goo on the track to irritate any oncoming vehicles. Or the Poison Powerup, which shoots two fangs out of the front of your car. The car that gets struck by them then enters Alert modus for 5 seconds, and during that mode it will explode once it's touched by any other player.

Oh, the ideas...
