I'm pretty sure 99 percent of the people who like the kind of music Aphex Twin makes, agree that Aphex Twin is one of the best artists in the genre.

I'd say that that half the home-made electronica out there is bounds better than Aphex Twin.

His songs are complex and detailed, but that doesn't make them all good. Alot of them sound intricate just for the hell of it, not to actually incite emotion.

In any case, what is "overrated" is almost always biased and opinionated. It's impossible for one to speak on behalf of the musical community as a whole.

How much have you heard? Only a handful of Aphex Twin is very complicated. And even those still have plenty of substance besides the drum programming.

I would say stuff like My Chemical Romance but to be honest they're not that overrated as they're hardly regarded as classics. Same as U2. Lots of people dislike them. They're big, but they'd need to be adored universally without reason to be the MOST OVERRATED BAND EVER.

I can't think of anything 'cos I like the Beatles etc. Maybe Frank Sinatra. Most of that era of music is just shit. Jazz was the only vaguely interesting thing going on.

I'm going to have to agree with Qonfused here. Regardless of how original someone is, or technically talented, or creative, or whatever else... if he makes music that I can't say ''this is good stuff'' to, then I couldn't really care about him or them/the artists.

Personally I wouldn't say Aphex Twin is overrated at all but it's horses for courses, innit?

As much as it makes me weep to hear people calling Mr. Phex overrated, he probably is to some degree. SAW1 and the RDJ Album were definitely landmarks, but oh my god... the incessant fawning even gave me some doubts. Besides, I think his days as a trailblazer are over. He brought electronic music to the living room, he shaped most IDM as it is today, influenced countless artists, and he made a ****load of cash in the process. I imagine he's simply content to ride it out from here and make Acid all day. Or at least until a new style comes along and catches his interest.

That is exactly what I said, man. I said that you don't have to like someone to understand that they are a good musician. I don't like country music, but I understand that there is plenty of talent in there, obviously. I don't understand how you misinterpreted what I said. I don't think that. I regard Venetian Snares just about as highly as Aphex. Venetian Snares has a way different style than Aphex Twin and I love both.

Joking aside: Timbaland. I don't normally mind the assinine mythology that gets taped onto hip hop producers. He has made some catchy, popular tracks. He knows how to fit different elements together well. But when people I know constantly laud him for being a genius and being teh bestest evar, I start to scoff.

Last year I was asked by a girl what I listen to. 'Mostly techno-type stuff [techno being the choice word because I didn't think she'd understand electronic/trance],' I said, to which she responded, 'Oh, you'll like Way I Are then! It's part techno.' To which I later listened and had a moment of facepalming. A PW-sounding accompaniment synth does not constitute an electronic track. And yet it's that, coupled with people's ignorance, that make people think he's original and incorporates other genres when he introduces one common element from songs in those genres into his own (similar to Usher having Lil Jon in 'Yeah!').

The whole Janne Sunni thing sealed it for me. Again, it's not like other artists haven't stolen before. It was his whole candid attitude, drawling in his barely-English speech about how it doesn't matter that he stole because he's rich. Great, another pretentious, RIAA-protected prick who's crushing smaller artists.

NIN has some good songs, but I dont like them as much as other people do. Personally, I got what I expected from MCR (which basically means I liked them). And I really like Avenged Sevenfold! Since when do they get that much publicity anyways? Ive seen them in one video game liscence. Otherwise, I never wouldve heard of them.

Also, as much as people may hate me for saying this, I like John Mayer, but not as much as other people do. I think he has some really good songs, but seriously I dont think hes all people lead him to be.

Yeah, that's what I thought. :\ Apart from Mogwai, post-rock is fairly unheard of over here. I know the US/Canada has got a pretty big scene with bands like EitS, A Silver Mt. Zion, This Will Destroy You, etc, but I don't think it's possible for bands like these to be overrated or overplayed. But, it's opinion, so fair enough :cheers:

They're okay, but nothing compared to the bands I mentioned, in my opinion. Postrock get's kind of samey after a while - a lot of bands out there doing exactly what the band in front is doing. A shame.

Yeah, you do see alot of patterns repeating themselves. But then, strip the vocals from any other genre and you'd probably be able to say the same.
