adding to steam

So I bought the box but how do I add it to steam? I tried to enter my cd key into the "activate product on steam" thing but it didn't accept it.

Ah nvm, turns out it's impossible but can only add a non-steam shortcut in the mygames list.

Sucks right? Really wanted to be able to add it as well.
