Okay, so when I first heard about and saw this game, I couldn't exactly say I was thrilled or excited. That could be simply because I'm just not that excitable about most games right now.
I want you guys to tell me, without spoilers, what made you so excited about this game initially.

The prospect of a System Shock 2 for this generation.

Speaking from the demo alone, what really shone for me was how atmospheric the game was. Be it from the sounds or the visuals, right down to the writings on the wall, the audio blogs of former citizens and the tidbits of information you find here and there. Not to mention just how creepy everything was, and how much the world you are in, the city of Rapture, actually feels like it was once an actual place and not just some map.
Presuming you enjoyed Half Life 2 for it's story, characters, levels and atmosphere, then this is right up that same street, albiet with a different setting. It's up for there for first person shooters that don't just rely on shooting people in the face, no matter how much that can be done.

It's not too scary. There are a few scary moments, but they're not contrived like Doom 3. They're scary in the sense that its supposed to make you feel that emotion of fear.

If you get Bioshock for anything, get it for its story. So far its story has been nothing short of fantastic. It is very intricate and compelling, especially if you listen to all of the tape recordings. The story is also helped in no small way by the phenomenal voice acting.

I think it was the setting of the game that got people so excited. A post-disaster setting in a crumbling, art deco style underwater city is just a great concept. Having played the demo I love it even more. Gameplay-wise I have my reservations as to how amazing or original it is, but I'm a sucker for story, setting and atmos, which Bioshock appears to have in spades.
The voice acting is also very good. It's not perfect, but considering the standard of most video games it is very good (especially the guy who does Ryan) and almost rivals HL2.

What originally I thought of when I noticed Steam saying they were doing Bioshock for sale was that they were re-releasing some other old game. I think it was System Shock or something.
