View Full Version : EDGE Top 100

EDGE magazine have compiled a readers listing of the top 100 video games of all time.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/6261546.stm

And there's the top 10. Hell, there's only two games in it that I wouldn't have there myself. Good job on Half Life 2.

Anyways, just FYI. Let the handbags commence!

So they named HL2 the best PC game ever?

That works for me.

Cormeh
03-07-2007, 11:22 AM
Technically, they did. Try to think of the overall video game library, as opposed to format.

Samon

I've never played Zelda, but there it is. Half-life 2 and Resident Evil 4 being in there is pretty sound, I wouldn't disagree.

Cormeh

I'm pleased that OoT has held it's ground for so long. It's also quite surprising to see people still back it.

To be honest, the only reason I put this up is because EDGE is a fairly reputable publication and has been for some time. Seeing Tetris and Metroid up there is a nice thing too.

The readers have certainly not lost their edge. *snicker*

Yes, can agree with Zelda, was a truely amazing game I must say, I would have put Half-Life 2 above it though, and I can definately agree with Mario 64, another classic.

Does anyone else highly disagree with Halo being in the top 10?

lol.

I would have put Half-Life in front of Half-life 2. Quite a few N64 games in there too, can't really comment since I never owned one.

FFXII at 8th place? RE4 at 2nd? Yeah, both good games, but of all the games of yore those two made the top 10? Hmm...

RE4 is a pritty dam amazing game, I was suprised to see FFXII in it though. Its an alright game. But nothing special.

I'd have put Half-life in at 20 or something. It's good, but it's far from Half-life 2 quality. Or, even, some of the other games in there. I'm also wondering where Deus ex is. Halo above Deus Ex? What a travesty.

Warbie
03-07-2007, 01:53 PM
I actually would have replaced HL2 with HL as well. As much as I love RE4, it wouldn't have made my top 10 either. Oh, Mario 64 should be bumped up to no. 2 and the fact that SF2 isn't mentioned is a complete travesty. It's easily one of the largest milestones in video gaming history.

However, as lists goes, this is one of the best i've seen :)

Decent although predictable list coming from EDGE, however I would have trown Halo and FF XII out.
And put MGS and Day of the Tentacle in their place.

03-07-2007, 02:47 PM
There are some choices I find annoying, some omissions I find baffling (good call Warbie on SF2), but the fact that the list is not complete nonsense probably means it's a kind of a good one, as lists go.

Which MGS?

That said I do like the second to, and I even like Raiden.
In fact I like him more then I liked snake in the first MGS.

Id say MGS1 but the remade version for the Gamecube, basically MGS2 graphics and gameplay using the MGS1 storyline, was exellent.

I'm split on MGS1/2. 2 was bogged down by horrid Otacon sleeping with sisters mum storyline, but 1 had Meryl, which is a kind of travesty in itself; almost as bad as Snakes "hey, I've known her for little more than 2 hours and already I love her!" At least 1 of the 3 needs to be in top 10 though. I'd settle for any of them, because I thought 3 was just as excellent.

Gray Fox
03-07-2007, 03:05 PM
I did not like the directing in the remake, it seemed way over the top and frankly childish. It tried to hard, and ended up looking amateurish.

To Samon:
In mgs 1 snake seemed a little bit slow. I still remember Master Miller(Liquid) saying Naomi had betrayed him and was in league with Gray Fox, and snake having a look on his face like someone said to him that his mother got out of her grave and was behind it all. Even though it was dead obvious, and there are more things. Raiden seemed to be more inquisitive and intelligent then snake in mgs 1, but Snake was really good in MGS2 imo.

edit: I also did enjoy the Otacom boning his mother bit and Meryl.

Samon

Didn't play. Saw the trailer with Snake leaping over a missile or something and I was put straight off.

Agreed, MGS 3 was very enjoyable to play and the boss battle with 'The End' was one of the top I have played, literally must have lasted an hour. But EVA really started to piss me off towards the end, but young Ocelot made up for it.

03-07-2007, 04:58 PM
I simply don't get the stubborn insistence that HL1 was in any way superior to its sequel. I mean, sure it was more groundbreaking, but the gameplay was patchy as hell. Only about half of it was created with anywhere near the care that went into HL2's gameplay.

Samon

Half-life 1 was extremely patchy. I guess you can't hold age against it but really, whole chapters blew utter chunks.

Only one PC game makes the top 10 - classic first-person shooter Half Life 2. Microsoft's Xbox also has only one representative in the elite list - with Halo: Combat Evolved at number seven.
Fail Fail Fail

Uhhh Thief? Starcraft? Warcraft? Deus Ex?

Heck, WoW should be up there because it's so popular. I don't even play WoW.

Seems like a pretty good list. I can't believe RE4 is number 2 and I haven't played it yet! (But I'm glad I waited so I could get the Wii version. :D )

I like the concept that it's not about nostalgia or "classic" potential, but if the games still hold up today. I was replaying Halo the other day, and the gameplay is still really fun - definitely the best console fps out there. And the opening sequence of Half-Life 2 still stands as one of the greatest achievements in gaming. Can't argue with the Nintendo domination either.

Warbie

I dunno, I think nostalgia plays a significant part is this list. I've revisited OoT various times over the years and, while each play has been fun, none compare to the utter WOW! that was loading OoT up for the first time. This huge, beautiful, sprawling adventure, all in 3d and with a completely new control method - there'd never been anything like it (much like the first Zelda on the nes). Since then scores of games have copied the formula and so much that amazed us before is now the norm. The last time I booted up OoT all it had going for it was nostalgia. You can still see the peerless attention to design and the layers of polish, and the magic is still there, but I can't help feel that much of this would be lost on someone who played OoT for the first time today.

OoT still deserves the no.1 spot for the impact it had at the time, for pretty much single handedly defining the 3d adventure game, and for the joy it was to play from start to finish (and then over and over again :)).

Agreed. That's also why Mario 64 deserves its spot.

RE4 I'm not so sure about, it was good, but not #2.

Starcraft definatley needs a spot up there, Halo needs to be bumped down into the 20's, and HL1 should be higher than Halo 1.

I don't know why everyone likes Deus Ex, I thought it was a piece of shit. Terrible AI, poor gunfights, awful weapons. I suppose I was missing the whole point of the game, but I wasn't able to play it for more than a few hours before turning it off out of sheer suckiness.

These, aside from the AI, are moot IMO. Sure, the combat sucked, but there was so much more to it than simply the fighting. Combat just isn't that important. Weapons aren't really that important (I'll refrain from going on a rant regarding the utterly mundane FPS-more weapons-better-game philosophy some people seem to condone).

Not that I'm accusing you otherguy, just speaking in general.

Halo's inclusion so high on the list is a face saving maneuver. They can't whack it down where it truly belongs, since it's among the few games they've ever given a score of '10' to.

When are they going to stop making these polls and just create an annual "Alright, we get it, Ocarina of Time is still great" day or something? The day when fat angry nerds in Nintendo t-shirts are free to run amok and beat to death anyone who doesn't have an N64 and a Zelda cartridge collecting dust in their garage - with Mario plushies. Then maybe that way I can stop giving a damn.

While those games are good, I didn't like them as much as OOT.

This is mainly because I have been a Zelda fan since I first picked up an NES. It was sheer joy to open the box for the first time. The game itself might not have been perfect, but for an adventure game it was excellent, and for a Zelda game it was the perfect transition into 3D.

I think zelda is an incredible game. With varied rich and thoughtful gameplay. Great controls that have been copied by many games and great looks at for it's time.
Hell the first time I played it I almost cried from joy, it was such an incredible experience. And I definitely do not mind it's top position.

Legend has it that video games actually existed more than 10 years ago. I've also heard that video games could've been around probably 20-25 years ago, and that they moved in herds.

Greatest games of all time, my arse. Gamers were clocking space invaders and galaxian when the pompous morons who write these stoopid lists were still playing with rattles.

Interesting Historical Fact: Galaxian was the first ever video game to use colour. Before that, colour was achieved by sticking strips of tinted acetate to b/w screens.

Just because a game was the best game of its time doesn't mean that it deserves to be called one of the best games of all time. Although some of those games are very good, alot of the time people only say that they're better than newer games because they remember them being so great and new and shiny and stuff, but if they actually played them again, they would find them lacking.

I'm not saying Space Invaders should've been no.1, in fact I hated the game. I'm saying calling something the top 100 games of all time is a ridiculous claim to make, as the result is based on popular opinion at a particular point in time, an opinion which is constantly shifting and advancing. Top 100 of the decade, maybe. But ever? nope.
