Not the most disappointing games, but the most disappointing moments. Avoid
I gotta say when they killed Lu Kang in one of the Mortal Combats. WTF?!
And when Phoenix dies in Starcraft.
There's a lot more.....

Uriel, those aren't disappointing so much as unexpected plot events. Well maybe not the Mortal Kombat one.
A better disappointing moment in gaming history might be Daikatana.

Uhhh, no they're disappointments. Disappointments can be applied to gameplay, graphics, sound, storyline, etc.
But I stated moments, which are applied to the story. Unexpected plot twists can still disappoint, suck, and so on.
EDIT: ooooooh, I got a big one. When you can't kill the CyberDemon Lord with regular weapons and have to use the soul cube. Along with finding there was no SpiderDemon Lord :(
I think it almost goes without saying, after playing through the tanker chapter of MGS2, being forced to play as the slightly-less-manly Raiden for the remainder of the game.

2003 in Video Gaming (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_in_video_gaming). First there was Unreal 2, which smelt like the rancid feces removed from the arses of 20,000 dogs destined to bulk out a day's worth of big macs. Then Homeworld 2 happened and it sucked more than the vacuum it is (supposedly) set in. Then Half-Life 2 promised to save the downward spiral of the FPS by September. You know what happened next.) Then Final Fantasy X-2 set the trend for Square-Enix's commercial comeback and utter artistic failure. And we saw Christmas in with Deus Ex: Invisible War. Santa's 'naughty' list must have been particularly long this year, because Deus Ex 2 was 'average and still playable', meaning that by comparison it was utterly terrible. He was opposed to the Iraq War or something.
Looking at the list of 'notable' games in 2003 isn't too exciting. There isn't a single game there really sticks out in my mind, just a collection of 'good' games and a heap of really disappointing or god-awful ones. Still, 2003 just made 2004 look even better...

Halo 2: Covenant attack Earth 'by accident'. "Earth will never be the same.." What a load of ****ing shit.
Perfect Dark 0: Horrible game. Just horrible.
Far Cry: Wondering around the 6th level if the gameplay was ever going to change. Shame the 14 levels did in fact not change.
Doom 3: Curious as to why I was bored at around the 20 minute mark...thinking nothing but how extremely lame it was when a dead body was flung at me in a vent and some retard way off starts "Muahaha!"ing. Twas then that I knew Doom 3 had failed, and pretty much sucked.
I'd mention some Quake 4 moments but lets face it...it really doesn't need to be said.

It went like this: I was playing the original Max Payne on my friend's computer. I'd been trekking accross town to do a level or two every day and was on the verge of finishing it. Then, during the final sequence, when you have to shoot the final cable to send the radio twoer crashing down, I was having a bit of trouble figuring out how to do it. Now, obviously, I would have got it eventually. Max Payne is not exactly a tough puzzle game. But, then, as I'm trying to figure it out, my friend (who had played virtually none of the game) walks in and says, "Oh, what are you doing? Can I try?" Well, I couldn't eactly say "No." It was his computer.
He figured it out and finished the game. The bastard.

MGS2 - Realizing that this whiny sissy-boy you've come to control after the tanker is the character you'll be playing for the rest of the ****ing game.
KOTOR2 - Crashing onto the final world and never seeing most of your companions again.
Prey - Those moments where bullshit Native American mysticism seeped so heavily into the story. **** Grandpa.
FEAR - Actually kind of mixed about this one. Killing Paxton Fettel. I'm glad they avoided the uber-boss routine, but just walking up to him and plugging a round into his skull seemed pretty anticlimactic.
WoW - Illidan, arguably the second most significant character of WC3 and TFT, is killed by Maiev Shadowsong. She was a crazy, unlikeable, throwaway character and should have just died in agony while hunting for him. His demise was also lacking connections to other characters that were important in his development (ie. Tyrande and Malfurion). Also, learning that Prince Kael'thas went crazy as a bullshit excuse for you to fight him. It's like Blizzard's entire approach to lore in BC was shitting in a bucket and finger-painting over the rich tapestry they had built up until that point.

PES 6 for 360 was nothing compared to the PC version. You were stuck with unlockable players no one had heard off, the multiplayer is so god damn laggy it could generate enough rage to make someone wanna kill babies, you cant register players into other teams to keep up with transfers, some of the players stats are ridiculously inaccurate AND you cant use your master league team in multiplayer matches.
Call of Duty 3 was so shallow and tedious I couldn't bare playing beyond the half way marker, the tank missions have got to be the worst simulator I have ever seen. No comparison to the first two.

Eh, both plots were about equal, though KOTOR I had a nice plot twist. But the way the damn ending of KOTOR II was carried out... blarg. Disgusting. Half Life 2 ending: WTF that's it? Where the **** are you going Gman? GET BACK HERE YOU ASSHOLE.
Metal Gear Solid 2: near the end, you find out that the main villains are call "Lu Li La Lo La Lu Li Lu Le Linkin Lankin"
Metal Gear Solid 2: Rose keep calling you bitching about why Raiden can't spend a time with her and all sorts of domestic shits. you are on a ****ing mission risking your life while your girlfriend keep calling you on a codec bitching about all sorts of thing. Halo - Library level
God of War - Hades level
Jak II & III - All round horrible frustrating game play
MGS3 - Predictable uninteresting story, uninteresting bosses especially story wise, lack of radar. Overall boring game play that rewards just shooting your way trough( either rambo style or sneak and head shots) instead of avoiding violence, levels lacking any thoughtful game play.
Hl2 - The already mentioned criticism of the story.
FFXII - when I realized that 90% of the game play is just grind trough maze like cheap level design that needs no input from me because of the gambits system. Lack of story and character development. What is there of the story and dialog is of much higher quality then previous FF's, it's just too little.

It seems to me the main problem players had was actually with Rose. I wouldn't know, I didn't give her conversations the time of day, but Rose was a pretty hated figure and I just assumed people merged this problem with Raiden. Raiden's chapter had better gameplay and he was more versatile than Snake. And Snake looked pretty badass from the other perspective.

I have two grudges against Raiden.
1) He was simply an annoying character. If you followed the story and answered all your codec calls, you would actually see something as incredulous as Raiden getting bitch-whipped by his girlfriend in the middle of a world-saving espionage mission. He was naive, whiny, and saddled with heaps and heaps of awkward dialogue. He may have technically been more powerful/versatile than Snake in terms of in-game mechanics. But Snake had character that went a lot further (although I'm no fan of his perpetual gruffness). It probably helps that the tanker was a far more interesting environment to play in than Big Shell.
2) I don't like wasting $50 to be toyed with in some overrated game designer's experiment. I picked up the game expecting to be Snake for most of its duration. Upon learning that Raiden was to remain, I felt cheated. This goes in conjunction with a lot of the other stupid stuff in the game, like the increasingly horrendous plot towards the end, the "you're in a game" self-references, and so forth. Kojima just teased you with Snake and then dropped him off the face of the Earth to make his grand, elaborate, poorly-written point... at the expense of the audience.
So that's why I don't like Raiden. In many ways, he signifies everything that was wrong with the game. :|

You just reminded me of how annoying I found the first bit of MGS2. Every second room I went into I was phoned up and explained, in a completly counter-immersive way, different gameplay aspects that I had already figured out from messing about and exploring in the first damn room. But I can't really blame Konami, they do have to explain that stuff to people who don't take it into their hands to explore what they can do themselves.

maybe its to do with the questions the game asks you before you start playing mgs2? like 'did you like mgs1' or whatever it asks, cant remember, afaik if you choose certain options like 'i didnt like mgs1' or havent played it you start with the plant chapter, then get to play the tanker part...

A lot of MGS2 in general felt like a hand-holding experience. If it wasn't the constant "Pess A, Raiden" shit it was the extreme amount of cutscenes hogging up at least half of the game. Too often it felt like the game was out of my control and I was just along for the ride.
