what constitutes "epic" songs? i thought epic in the traditional sense like side B from the Pink Floyd album Animals or 2112 by Rush or Rhythm of the Ancient Mariner by Iron MaidenI was going to ask this myself - this looks like a list of everyone's favorite metal songs so far. I thought it meant 'favorite snowboarding music', as that's usually where I hear the word 'epic' outside the context of movie advertisements. I keep thinking "Material Girl" by Madonna or "Butterbean" by the B-52s, so I'll abstain from including an actual submission.

I've heard metallica with an orchestra and it's not epic at all. Sounds like they just slapped it together. I do like metallica though, but I wouldn't consider any of their songs "Epic".

Tonight, Tonight by the Smashing Pumpkins which at least sounds epic... beautiful beginning to an album (after the piano instrumental, of course).
All Apologies by Nirvana feels like an epic swan song.
There, there by Radiohead.
EPIC
noun: 1 A long poem describing the deeds of heroic or legendary figures or the past history of a nation. 2 A long film, book, etc. portraying heroic deeds or covering an extended period of time. Musically, can also be known as a 'concept' album.
Examples, literary and musical - The Lord of the Rings, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Beowulf, The Fountain of Lamneth, Thick as a Brick, 2112.
Ignorance of one's own language is not an excuse for stoopidity
Faith No More - Epic - is Epic :D

NIN - Just Like You Imagined (the music in the 300 trailer which I think fits realy well)
Everytime this comes on when I'm on my bike ride I can't help but suddenly increase my speed throughout the entire song.

You've obviously never heard the song The Call of Ktulu, which in my opinion is their best song.

Those are what I'd consider "Epic" songs. They're all extremely long, by song standards, and are very well written. A short song that's good I wouldn't consider epic. I believe, however, they're just using "epic" as to mean good, which is what most people seem to use it for nowadays anyway.

Epic, eh? Hmmm...
"Airbag" by Radiohead - Feels like a star hurtling through space until it bursts into a badass supernova.
"Wax The Nip" by Aphex Twin - Sounds as if some kind of machine is being energized up before being released into some sprawling, sci-fi battle.
"Just Like You Imagined" by Nine Inch Nails - Needs no explanation.
"Pro Radii" by Autechre - Can't put my finger on it, or even begin to describe what I think of. Each time I've listened to it, I've always thought of a new concept behind it.
