View Full Version : TF2 Classes Based on Nationalities?

Javert

After seeing the Heavy Weapons video and hearing him with the thick Russian accent, I wouldn't be surprised if Valve also made the voices of each class to have their each special accent of a location or group. Some others become obvious. Consult the TF2 wallpaper to see just what I mean.

Soldier: German accent. Judging by the gray uniform and gruntiness, he's a pure send-up on the Day of Defeat Axis soldier.

Demolitions: Carribean accent. With the dark skin, goatee, and patch over the eye, he may as well have been firing cannons or sticks of dynamite aboard a pirate ship. Yarr!

Spy: British accent. Something about his thin body and face, that cig in his mouth, screams James Coburn-esque. Besides, aren't the Brits awesome spies?

Sniper: Australian or Texan accent. His hunting hat and jacket says it all. A man of the wild.

Medic: Ivy League Professor accent. Sort of like an American-Oxford accent. This guy is a geek that went to Med school. Just chose a different profession.

What are your guesses? It will be interesting to see some other TF2 classes interviews and see whether Valve chooses to vastly differentiate their voice.

This post is NOT meant to be racist or discriminatory. Any stereotypes are in good fun (computer game fun).

Whatever the scout is, I'm guessing he's going to talk really fast. I would hope that the spy wouldn't talk at all. Maybe something quick before he kills the interviewer. Can't wait for more similar videos.

The Sniper's got to have an Australian accent. He already looks like he's wearing croc-hunter gear.

The spy should be Pierce Brosnan or something...

/EDIT Medic should really really sound like a professional doctor or something, that'd be funkytown.

The scout's got baseball socks on. Perhaps he'll be from Boston.

I thought of the spy with a British accent too. It seems very fitting with the suit and the cigarette, the very Bond-esque look he's got. And I also noticed the similarities between the soldier's uniform (namely the helmet) and the Nazi uniforms, but it takes a little imagination for me to hear him with a German accent. I don't know what other kind of voice he'd have, though.

The Engineer has to have a gruff, Southern US accent to go along with that ho-down dance.

You should never know where the pyro's from, because his voice should be raspy and peppered with the occasional gasping breath. Dude's gotta sound like he's been sucking on smoke for years.

Pyro is from De_inferno

Scout is from Singapore. We have the fastest walking speed in the world.

edit

what i meant was fastest casual average walking speed in the world. :D of course many other countries also have people who walk really quick casually but our average is the highest.

I think that'd be great, I love boston. Raspy, difficult speaking would be good for Pyro because he doesn't appeal to a nationality. Sniper, Australian, Heavy, Russian, Spy, British, Soldier, German (maybe).

Good baseball call on the Scout. I can totally see him having that fast-talking Boston accent (see "The Departed" for example).

This man speaketh the shens.

Pyro's voice should be through a filter of some sort to make him sound like he's talking through a gas-mask.

Spy should be British or Russian.

I can just imagine the soldier going
"I do enjoy zee rocket jumping, yaw"
In a very German accent.

The engineer must sound like the one of the engineers from C&C:RA.

Now, that gives me an idea. What if both sides had different nationalities for troops? Red could be Russians and Blue; Western Nations (And Austrailia)

i think the pyro should definitely sound crazed, like no obvious accent to his voice indicating where he's from aside from the gasmask muffling effect, but he'd say things in a way thats just...off.

perhaps talking about fire as if it were a living thing or artform and having ackward pauses in his speech as well as creepy laughter in all the wrong places.

maybe syaing stuff like

*heavy breathing* look at how it..*heavy breathing* consumes, so beautiful, oh yes...

"heavy breathing* mother said i should not, hehehe, play with matches, hehehe...

In order, from TFC's class menu, the best I can remember it:

Scout: based on Trailer 2 I'd say probably non-specific American accent, but he'll talk SUPER-fast. After all, the tagline was "Too. Much. Caffeine." :)

Sniper: I'd put him as an Aussie, probably similar to Jason Isaacs' character from Jurassic Park (the park warden).

Soldier: I'm thinking "traditional" American soldier, sorta like the NPC grunts in OpFor. Strong but raspy voice, from yelling for so many years. Still always has energy though, and anxious to get into battle.

Demo: Sketchy-sounding guy, always talks real low, and always very deliberately. I'm thinking the stereotypical "veteran". He used to be in close combat, but now he just likes watching things blow up from a distance.

Medic: Average middle/upper-class British accent.

HW guy: Russian, as we've seen.

Pyro: I'm thinking similar to HL1's grunts that capture Gordon. ("And if they find the body?" "What body?")

Spy: Regular Bond-type. Probably not so much Connery as the others though.

Engineer: Totally Deniro. I can only imagine this character as a working-class Italian.

Go to about the 13:40 mark of this vid (after the Portal stuff). You can hear the characters' voices during the footage of their taunts. Scout sounds American; Spy sounds upper class English, Medic and Pyro don't speak, Soldier sounds, well, Anglophone anyway, and I believe the Sniper is saying "God Save the Queen", in...what's that a Cockney accent...?

I just noticed this thread. Great contributions from all, but I'm rather surprised that no one has made the obvious connection for the Pyro: Ignus. If anyone has played Planescape: Torment they know that he and the Pyro were seperated at birth, and in my opinion should be used as inspiration for the Pyro video, if it is ever made. I do like the suggestions of not giving him an accent, plain English but muffled through the gas mask and sounding like he's been smoking since he was twelve.

It was Bob Peck, not Jason Isaacs. Who isn't Australian. Sorry to be pedantic, but JP was a large part of my childhood. I was, like, way cool.
I think it's pretty obvious that I still am.

Nice one; I didn't know it wasn't Jason Isaacs. It's been a while since I've seen the movie though.

I knew Jason Isaacs wasn't Australian, but I also know that he's capable of a wide range of accents. ;) It's good that someone knew who I was talking about though, and thank you for the correction.
