I can't wait for Halo 3. Co-op is always a blast and multiplayer can be seriously good fun - bf, Quake Wars (i've been in the beta for months) still can't match the arcady experience of jumping in a vehicle with a few mates and bouncing over hills with lazers and rockets flying everywhere that Halo does so well.

My main concern is single player will be lacking when compared to the original (Bungie dropped the ball with Halo 2) and that multplayer will be a weapons rush.

And yes, Halo is far better on the Xbox than on the pc - the difference between one of my fave fps and an very average one.

I'd LOVE to play in the beta, and yesterday I was looking right at a copy of Crackdown with an invite in it, I think the idea of only playing for 3 weeks is really silly. :( ?35 is not something I want to dish out for 3/4 weeks playing (I've heard Crackdown is good... then boring, real fast, and from the demo I can see the novolty of co-op wearing off for me after a while)

I'd like a proper evolution of the series. Halo 2 was little more than Halo 1.5, and was a serious letdown. And as somebody who does my online gaming on a PC, the multiplayer (ignoring coop) is not applicable to me.

Basically, I'd be excited for Halo 3 if Halo 2 wasn't so shitty. As it currently stands, the jury is still out. I'm awaiting more media to see if its worth getting excited over.

Whatever your opinions of the original Halo are, it's hard to argue that certain parts of some levels weren't staggeringly awesome, especially for it's time. I remember on a snow level, forget its name, running from an interior into a large outdoor area right into a large covenant vs marine fire fight. Lazers flying everywhere, vehicles driving/hovering around, people getting killed. It was like being in Starship troopers. Even today i've yet to play a fps that attempts something this, let alone do it so well. More of the same but on a larger scale (imagine multiples of tanks and aircraft and explosions everywhere) would be awesome.

I agree completely. Assault on the Control Room btw - my favorite level.

If I had heard one solid iota of evidence that they're bringing Halo 3 MP back more to the Halo 1 roots I'd be 10x more excited for the beta and game. The only evidence we have is the reappearance of the assault rifle and pistol (in some form) and that doesn't really mean much in terms of game flow.

I agree with everything here except for the starship troopers part. Didn't feel like that at all, but it certainly kicked ass.

Shame that Halo 2 sucked.

Bungie can still redeem themselves with Halo 3 though, so good luck to them.

Well, at least the game sold.

The Crackdown advertisements on TV were pretty bad. It's like they got some spanish guy who seems like he doesn't actually speak spanish to act tough and hispanic. And it didn't make sense and it was quite stupid tbh. And the graphics didn't look good on the Commerical. I got the impression that it was some kind of saints row wannabe that was lacking in every way.


Plus, it's Halo 3. Who cares about Crackdown. :P

Crackdown is great fun in co-op. If anything the beta allowed many people to thoroughly enjoy a decent game that otherwise they would have missed.

lol, true to an extent. Some of us are just annoyed by halo fanboys & that it's way overhyped. If someone likes halo, that's cool, what's important is that you have fun. Halo 1's multiplayer was a simple thing to get a group of friends together and blast away....but having played counterstrike and other Multiplayer FPS's, it always felt inferior.

Halo is the greatest game ever and Halo 2 was even better. In fact Halo 2 is without question the greatest game ever created. Halo 2 single player was ten times better than HL there wasn't anything repetitive about it. And Bungie just simply owns Valve! /end sarcasm here

Crackdown is awesome, but it seems like it might be a little short. I've already found 120 of the 500 Agility orbs. Then again, I'm still on the first island, and I've only found 20-odd hidden orbs, and I haven't tried co-op yet. Awesome game, nonetheless.

MrJukes (http://www.bungie.net/Stats/PlayerStatsHalo3.aspx?player=MrJukes) seems to be a good choice for a start. You can click around between games played, and then mouseover player names to get a quick rundown of their score, medals won, and which weapon they had the most kills with.

Yeah that personal grav lift looks awesome. Gonna be fantastic getting vehicles up in the air like that. Imagine the gameplay with those though now? Two runners go forward with grav jumpers, they put them down and then two quad bikes (two guys on each) rush forward, leap the wall and then wham! You've got 4 guys in the heart of the base with the element of blitzkreig!

Need to buy Crackdown tomorrow. NEED. Gotta call UPS tomorrow, too, to get them to pick my bastard machine up.

Just been watching that live feed for a good 20 minutes now. Good stuff! What I've gathered (that I, personally, didn't know so sorry if it's been confirmed for a while

Everyone is alot weaker now
Turrets can be picked up and used
Theres some form of third-person rocket weapon, that isn't a rocket launcher, more of rocket-Brute shoot, as opposed to the Brute shot being a grenade launcher... of sorts
That mortar weapon at the back of high ground that was said to do something... well, doesn't seem to do anything. That, or the guys playing never looked into it
Spiker looks awful and looks like it's going to feel and sound underpowered

I'm just thinking now, actually, is this going to be worth getting? I'm going to Turkey on the 25th, and my 360 hasn't been sent off yet. I'm arranging for it to be picked up on Monday, and if it comes back in 4 or 5 days like a few peoples have, that'd be awesome as I'd then have the working days of the next week then a week after I get back. But if it doesn't come back within 5 days, and it comes back the day before I go away, that gives me a weeks play time when I get back.

I've had problems with specific games, and I've tried pretty much everything I can think of (with multiple disks, hard drives, no live connection etc.) but the "support" insists its nothing, so would they just send it back and charge me?(My warrenty ran out, and I was 15 days away from being able to send it back as a 2005 xbox :()

Yeah I've been going backwards and forwards to Bungie.net all afternoon looking for such. One small post appeared about the 'dramatic or subtle' changes but nothing yet.

Out at 1:00pm in England tomorrow, which means I get a niiiiice lie in before I go off to my mates to play it. Got a good number of friends coming over at different times so it's gonna be wicked. Do some Team Training with my mate first then jump into some Team Skirmish games. Fupp yeah.

Plus it looks like Bungie will be updating the Beta at a couple intervals, at least. The matchmaking playlists opened up BTB, and the playlists also control equipment and weapons, which means they could throw in the Sword and Pistol at any moment \o/

Me and my mates have all agreed to film our first ever games and save them, then send them across to each other to laugh at how badly, or awesomly, we do in our first games.

I've been playing it for almost 4 hours now and...

Meh

Too much like Halo 2 with a few good additions and more flaws (in my book).

It's pretty mindless, not team-centric and very fast paced.

Pros:

+Looks better (about the same leap from Halo 1 to Halo 2 - maybe smaller)
+No bugs (yet)
+Small changes to interface and gameplay that are kinda neat
+Spike grenades
+Bubble shield (there should be more because it doesn't come into play enough if you ask me - it's one of the few things keeping battles interesting)
+Dual wielding is all but obsolete (I thought this was a shitty addition to Halo anyways)

Cons:
-Same exact gameplay and encounters you've seen in Halo 2
-Mongoose is nothing but a ferry to beat other players to weapons or a death waiting to happen
-Shotgun is still garbage
-Sniping is still a piece of cake
-Rocket pod is surprisingly crappy
-Holding the bomb you can get 1-punch kills - I got an easy triple kill against a shotgun-user, dual wielder and assault rifle guy
-Land mines are almost useless unless you plan to shoot it right away to detonate or you're dealing with complete morons that will ignore the loud annoying sounds it makes and step on it/drive over it
-Spartan Laser needs to be balanced for obvious reasons (maybe make the charging a one-way thing - once you start charging you can't stop it or something like in Gears of War)
-Shields seem a bit too low - 1 very short burst + a melee and you have a kill (I'm not sure but I think 2 melee hits kill). Also plasma pistol charge + punch = kill :|

And one annoying thing that will hopefully only be in the beta. There are 3 ranked playlists to choose from: Rumble, Team Slayer and Team Skirmish. I play team skirmish all the time in hopes of getting one of the very few modes I like (CTF - which I have gotten ONCE). The annoying thing is - there are still a surprising amount of team slayer games that are in the team skirmish playlist. If I wanted to play team slayer I would've picked it...

Also, I welcome Assault or CTF on Valhalla fo sho. :P I didn't even get bored of those both on Coag - that map was a proper challenge sometimes. High Ground looks AWESOME for attack and defence but from what I can see it looks like the defenders don't have much to defend. :\ Looootts of openings.

Halo 3 beta is available for download now!

You might have to go into the System tab, then Memory, then highlight your Hard Drive, press Y, then press X X LB RB X X to do system maintenance. You'll have to redownload any game updates (patches, basically, not extra content), but it'll enable the download icon in Crackdown's menu.

Plus for our troubles, the beta's extended until midnight on June 10th \o/

I'm not very impressed with Halo 3... It's the same stuff I've been playing for ages, nothing new. The graphics are very Halo 2 and nothing that really tickled my fancy (But it's just a multiplayer beta, I hope they sort it up by the time they release it)

I finally got a go today at my mates house. Little annoyed that as he had my HDD and my Crackdown at his house overnight he's been mooching off it all day. He said I could come over from 6 til 8 as he was revising all day, but his Bungie stats page says differently. ):< I've took my game and HDD back with me now anyway in hope that my 360 comes back tomorrow, and out of petty spite. :P

Annnnyway. I would of enjoyed myself ALOT more if I wasn't with my two mates as during my first go, as I was getting used to the controls, they were constantlty in my ear shouting out what to press. As it was my first go, shouting ''IT'S RELOAD TO GET INTO VEHICLES'' isn't going to help as I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT RELOAD IS. Oy vey. Too many things to do with the right bumper. Controls do feel a little messy to be honest. I'll get used to them but it's as if they've taken Halo 2's controls and shoved them in a blender. Also, comms on the D-Pad is just awkward. I have to pretty much take my right hand away from any other buttons to talk. And why does it make so many different noises? Beep! Clunzzk! Blooble! Fiizsst! Wtf?

They were also quick to point out EVERYTHING I've been telling them about the last weeks. ''RORY PICK THAT UP IT'S A DEPLOYABLE SHIELD!'', ''THEY'VE ADDED ATV'S GO GET IT COME ON MAN''

I really can't wait to get my 360 back so I can play it on my own. But from what I did play, I really enjoyed it.

Disliked Snowbound. Too dull. Really like High Ground, though, and I only got one game on Valhalla but I really enjoyed that. Although that game was VIP and I didn't find that as fun.

Weapons feel nice. It's cool having a BR to kill someone a distance away whilst also having the AR to keep in close combat with.

Didn't use the Brute Spiker, used the Spike Grenades though which, whilst sometimes thrown like a pussy, are pretty ****ing cool. My first kill in the game was a stick with the spiker. :)

Sniper was a real change to me as I wasn't use to the slight delay in the magazine. Halo 2's rifle was like an assault rifle in terms of firing, so kills that weren't headshots were easy to get. Now, with the slight delay, often I'd have put the first shot in then the target would of gotten behind cover. I can only say this for High Ground, though, as on offense theres a lot of tight spaces to hit people in, like doorways, etc.

Love the gatling gun. It's inevitable that you will die with this, but when you catch 2 guys from behind, or wait at a choke point it's a truely devestating weapon.

I only got three kills with the Laser. One was just pure luck, the other was as I was chasing these two guys on a Mongoose through the corridors of High Ground. Easy pickings. Quite a good weapon, terrible if your out in the open with enemies from all sides, though.

Just played two games.

Initial impression: WAY better than Halo 2. Feels much more like Halo CE's multiplayer, less arcadey and "floaty". Weapons are far more balanced, even though I did get killed with the battle rifle an awful lot. The only shitty things so far are the sounds made when you use voice chat. Press button, WSHZZZZZZT, "Two guys coming in through the left tunnel", silence, your friend says "Sorry, through the wha-" WSRRROWWWWW "-ldn't hear you because of the annoying voice chat sounds."

QFT. I burst out laughing at how badass the Needler is now. I picked it up in High Ground, saw a guy near the sniper cave, unloaded from the top of the bunker, got a kill. :D :\ Carbine deffo. feels more sturdy now, too. Seems more weighty, packs more of a punch. Felt a bit puny in Halo 2 - they kind of weapon I could kill on guy with, whereas today I survived an ambush of two guys with it. Nice.

Love it! It's great to have new content in Halo 3. Like the new weapons (Laser is difficult to use, and Spike grenades make a meaty noise when stuck in someone), and love the revision of old ones. The needler is truly awesome.

And thanks to the trip mine, I got my first Overkill (4 successive kills), and Extermination (Kill every opposing team member in rapid succession) medals!

Heh, best moment in the Beta so far:

Playing 1-Flag CTF on High Ground, with our team on Defence. I have a needler, and was checking the tunnel for attackers when I see out of the corner of my view an enemy with a Spartan Laser, tucked away on the ledge right next to the Lasers spawn point. Since he hasnt noticed me, I decided to have some fun and fire a full clip of needles at him. About half of the clip sticks in him before he notices and tries to escape. BOOM! Those needles explode, kill him, and send him right over the wall. BUT the other half of the needler clip continues to follow the body, sink in and explode at the same time. BOOM! His body was catapulted right back to the beach. Man, I died laughing watching his body go flying. :P

Coop Crackdown has to be one of the most fun games i've played in months - it's hard to play the Halo 3 beta when this is that much more enjoyable :)

However, back on topic - so far i'm enjoying the beta. Decent visuals, very solid and weighty feeling engine/combat (the opposite being one of my pet hates in fps), it runs smooth and I haven't experienced any lag. A little polish, more ppl per side, extra game types and more vehicles and Halo 3 is going to be a blast.

I feel it's still plagued with the no-skill crap that haunted Halo 2 only in some cases it's worse.

General game flow has changed along the way.

Halo 1 : Outdoors battles ended up being battles between pistols, pistol vs. sniper, person vs. vehicle, etc. All of the mentioned situations could be won by either party if they knew what they were doing and were good.

Halo 2 : Vehicles are all but useless due to lock-on rockets and the fact that anybody can jump right over any vehicle AND that the ghost no longer gets slowing power with plasma shots. Other battles turn into spray-fests, each player seeing who started firing first or times their melee strike. The winner of the above situations is the player that fires first or gets the drop on the other player, no matter what skill level they may be.

Halo 3 Beta : Mongoose is a death waiting to happen, Warthog can be ok but still easily avoidable and easy to take down. 90% of combat turns into assault rifle fights, once again seeing who gets their shots off first or who times their melee strike right. Having the other weapons basically just gives you a derivative of the assault rifle battle. The fact that everybody has less shields only makes matters worse for when somebody starts shooting you first - taking even more skill out of the equation.

Dunno, I've fought my way out of a few fights involving an enemy with a BR in the Beta now... I think it's nicely balanced, personally. You should put some more time in to it other than a few hours. At first I was joyous to be playing it, then a few hours down the line I was getting frustrated with it as I was getting used to the controls, weapons and maps, and now that I know everything about the weapons and maps I really enjoy it.

You forgot about the equipment. Though I personally dont use it to turn the tide of one gunfight, it adds a whole new level to Halo combat.

I'm finding that the equipment isn't as game-changing as it could be. The landmine is all but useless, the gravity lift is only useful in High Ground, and the bubble shield has yet to noticeably turn the tide of a battle in my experience.

So far the only really awesome one is the power drainer. It's more powerful and is useful in more situations than the others, I find. Especially this one time, Multi-CTF on Valhalla - one teammate mancannoned from the enemy base to the middle where I was waiting with a power drainer. As expected, three defenders followed on the mancannon, and a Mongoose started coming from the chaingun area of the map. So as the flag carrier runs forwards, I throw down the power drainer where the mancannoners land, pull out my battle rifle, one-shot the three of them, and then frag the mongoose. Needless to say, we got the capture :P

1. You and your friend create a party.
2. Have 6 people in one of the parties.
3. Then go to your friends party with the six people.
4. Then usually one of those 6 people will get accidently booted
5. That person booted will have the custom lobby.
6. Invite everyone in.
7. Leave the lobby, and you will enter a new one--this time with the option to start a custom game!
8. Make invincible vehicles, enable banshees on valhalla, turn off the time limit, and make yourself immortal by going to "quick options" and then to "map override" or something like that.

edit: Got into a custom game with a mate and had a spin in the Wraiths. I like it. I prefer the fact that it has a turret - it looks cool and gives a good element of defence from infantry. The machine gun on the Scorpion made it insane to get close to, so I hope it has a secondary position for the machine gun on that too so that it can be taken out to get near to.

edit2: Amish you don't need a party of 6 to get into a custom lobby. I dropped out of a game yesterday and landed in a custom lobby somehow. Forgot how I did it now, but I also know a few friends get into it as a 3 man party.

Okay, in case anyone is actually up for some Warthog Run, here's how to set it up and play.

Warthog Run

Options
Health: No shields, 50% health
Weapons: Rockets and grenades only (infinite grenades)
Vehicles: Warthog only (driver seat only)
Vehicle Invincibility: ON
Game mode: Slayer FFA, first to 50 points.
Gravity: 150-200% (will require a bit of testing)
Player Invulnerability: Unknown (will require testing)
Map: Valhalla

How to Play

The goal of the game is to get 50 points through two methods: Killing someone in a Warthog, and then using that Warthog to run other people over.

First thing to remember - think of the game as having fluid teams. Everyone on-foot is on the same "team", as is everyone in a Warthog. People on-foot work together to take down people in Warthogs, and vice-versa.

Now, if you see an empty Warthog, you MUST get into it, and you are ONLY allowed in the DRIVER seat. No riding shotgun or gunning in this game. Once you are in a Warthog, you are not allowed to get out at any point. You must stay in the Warthog, and get kills through running others over. When you die, control of the Warthog goes to whoever killed you.

If you are on-foot and you see somebody get into a Warthog, you MUST wait FIVE SECONDS before attacking them, to allow them a getaway to get their vehicle up to speed. However, this does not prevent that person from running you over in that first five seconds, so beware! Once the 5-second getaway is over, you are free to fire rockets or grenades at that person to kill them.

Once you have killed someone who was driving a Warthog, you must IMMEDIATELY take control of that Warthog. You are NOT allowed to attack ANY other Warthog drivers at this point. That is to say, you are allowed ONE driver kill per life, and once you have killed a driver, you will spend the rest of your spawn-life getting kills through running others over. [edit: Unless you're far away from your Warthog, and someone else takes it first]

Other things to note:

-- Kills made using the Rocket Launcher at close range are generally considered to be "less skillful" than kills made with grenades. At long range, rocket kills are acceptable, but remember that if you get that long-range rocket kill, you have to make it to that Warthog without firing at other drivers.
-- Extra points for medals may be turned on to give Splatter kills extra points. This would also add points for kills made using a sticky grenade and/or melee kills against drivers, so overall it wouldn't really matter.
-- Don't be a dick and rocket/nade other ground-pounders.
-- Sometimes, players will die before they reach the Warthog of the driver they killed, or they may have to trek across half the map to get to their Warthog. As such, if you see a Warthog unmanned for more than ten seconds or so, please try and get into it. It keeps the game moving and keeps it balanced.
-- Mongeese might also be acceptable vehicles, though it will be somewhat harder to run people over.
-- Gravity must be at least 150% to prevent players from continually jumping over the Warthogs. Otherwise it's impossible to run anyone over.

Nope, not too excited about Halo 3, although the graphics look nice. I won't be buying it because-

1. I don't own a 360 (and I'm glad I don't)

I havent seen anything great yet, it looks like they basically remade halo2 but with a slightly upgraded engine, i mean i cant even tell halo2 and 3 apart, it looks exacly identical at some parts! The gameplay is the exact same so why waste money making something you have already made?

I really dont get this...cant they come up with new creative and original ideas to add to the gameplay? I knows just beta but atleast they should have something by now...

Did you play Halo 2 or Halo 3?

I haven't, but the reason I ask, is because I've seen videos and Halo 2 looks like ass, even on Vista with the upgraded resolution and textures. From what I've seen of Halo 3 it looks really nice to me.

Halo 2 and Halo 3 look nothing like each other. The only similarity is things that are part of the story, like armour, or environments, vehicles, etc, and even they have gotten an overhaul.

In my own opinion, it also plays nothing like Halo 2. Without being big-headed, I use to come out top three position of Halo 2 team slayer games, whereas in Halo 3 it's a completly different story. I can't explain it.

That said, my last few days of playing the Beta have been ass. I've always been put on the shitty team of guests or ranks lower than mine, whilst the other team has a load of ruperts and high-levels playing. But my main annoyance is not really to do with Halo 3 itself, more a friend, who doesn't help me WHAT SO EVER. I'll be in a firefight, I'll take down a sheild or two and I'll get killed, and as I pan the camera it turns out my friend was standing behind or near me not doing anything until I'm dead. He always does he, he NEVER helps anyone, he just mops up afterwards.
