DT has just put out another amazing release with their album entitled "Fiction." Yes, they are a metal band, but unlike most, they are actually good, excellent really. This new album is proof of that I think. Most metal bands never approach the kind of innovation/melody that DT does. To them, the piano is as important as the guitar (well, almost is, heh). And in a genre were lyrics take a backseat to growls, these guys have written some of the best lyrics I've ever read/heard. The standout tracks are Terminus, The Mundane And the Magic, and The Lesser Faith imo.

I think that it is the general consensus that metal will always be "shit music" (I've heard that a lot) and while a great majority might be unoriginal, they have the ability to obscure really great bands such as DT. So, who else has gotten this album and was blow away by it?

I dunno. I have Character, and it's a pretty decent melodeath album, but Dark Tranquillity really aren't anything outstanding. Bands like Arsis, Darkane (though they are less melodic), Carcass (their Heartwork album), Children of Bodom, and Amorphis (Elegy) do the same sort of thing, just better. That's not to say that Dark Tranquillity are bad, just... unremarkable. Just about every song of theirs on Character sounds exactly the same to me, minus a couple of standout songs.

And please, cut the "metal is shit but these guys are good, really!" attitude. Metal has a huge number of incredibly worthwhile artists, and there are plenty of people on this forum who listen to it. Are you fifteen? Except to a person who's never been outside the top 50, there's really nothing all that shocking or edgy about most metal. Quit playing at being rebellious about it. It's just music.

Every song on Character might sound somewhat similiar, but they are far from sounding the same. I'm not exactly sure how you can think that, but everyone's entitled to their opinion. Also Character is just a small spot in their career. Albums, such as Fiction, blow it out of the water. Really, if you're basing their musical merit off of one album (which is what is seems like to me) I don't really see how that works.

Also, if you've read their lyrics (anything from Damage Done-Fiction) in that aspect alone they are far above average. Then you have the music style itself, which usually changes from album to album to some degree, sometimes moreso. And no, I'm not fifteen.

I never implied there was anything shocking or edgy about most metal, as you said. Finally, I wasn't "playing rebellious" but it's always fun to insult or belittle someone who doesn't share your exact musical tastes, I guess...
