As a big fan of Guild Wars I was glad to hear that there was a new expansion pack comming to the series, along with a second game!

Firstly, they are going to release a new expansion for the first game, called Eye of the North. It's not a full chapter like Factions or Nightfall so you will need to own a previous version of the game, but it will be cheaper than the previous chapters. It will bridge the gap between Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2.

Guild Wars 2 is in production with a beta planned for next year sometime. It's a totally new game set a thousand years after the first.

That's just a short summary but the full article with some concept art for GW:EN and a few in-game screenshots.

Here's the key points about GW: EN

Still no monthly fee
Due for release this holiday (Q4?)
18 New multi-level dungeons, 150 new skills, 10 new heroes (guh, hate heroes) and 40 new armor sets
Takes place mostly underground with three new races being introduced
Charr are set to re-appear
Contains the Hall of Monuments - Used to transfer achievements, names into GW2.
Every Monument will unlock something in GW2, be it a hero or a pet.
When you create your character in GW2 he will inherit all of those achievements

Key Points about GW2

Still no monthly fee
Persistant world
Example of this is:
"You are wandering through the countryside and you see a dragon flying overhead. You and a group try to stave off the dragon. If you are successful the nearby town gives you a treasure.

But if you don't drive off the dragon, the bridge will be destroyed. This will lead to a team of carpenters gathering at the bridge to try to fix it and then you will have to protect them from bandits."
.

The new races encountered in GW: EN will be playable in this game. (Meaning you don't have to play as a human if you choose not to)
Huge PvP battles. Players play on different worlds, there will eb world vs world battles.
If your world wins a battle you can gain bonuses. Like better drops, better energy regen etc...
Battles will be mixed up every so often to keep things fair
Very high or no level cap
You can jump, swim, slide and even climb trees
Public beta next year

Sounds great, can't wait for them :D

I am glad they are doing a guild wars 2. I really enjoyed the first and wasn't really into buying a hundred expansion packs so i quit after the second came out. It sound like the next GW will have a lot of things I was hoping for too. The only thing that worries me is the high or no level cap. one of the things the first one did right was its focus on skill rather than on time played, it made the PvP that much more in-depth. But if the world is anything thing like they say, and that isn't the usual hype, maybe I won't care as much and will focus on PvE play instead.

Yeah, the high or no level cap thing kinda put me off too... Guild Wars is great because I can instantly make any kind of character I want and then jump into PvP on equal footing with everyone else. I actually unlocked all of the skills through the first expansion pack by doing nothing but PvP arenas; it was great.

Sadly, the community this game has is absolutely horrible... I'd log off just because I'd get so sick of people's constant bullshit, and I never did find even a semi-decent guild.

Yeah, the level cap got me worried kinda too. But I think it is purely cosmetic after a certain level or something. I think it would be better to keep a low level cap like they have now and give the player a different title depending on how much experience they have or something.

Very glad there is still no monthly fee too. It's one of the reason I play it. Don't want to pay a fee to any of the other MMO's.

Yeah, GW2 sounds awesome.

I really, really, really want to go back into GW but there are already 2 expansions out and I have barely any time already. :(

GW One is still very active, even though there are two other expansions. I still play in the first game from time to time. You should get back into it :)

GW : EN seems alright, but at best I'm lukewarm to GW2 atm.

What gets me is the races. Essentially they're adding a bunch of new races and kinda ignoring all the older established ones apart from the Charr. Like what about Tengu, Centaurs, Dwarfs, and Hekets?

You can jump

That's one step in the right direction, things are looking up I suppose

Well GW: EN bridges the gap between GW and GW2. Dwaves play a major role in it, so I doubt they will have got rid of them in GW2 unless something happens to them in GW: EN.

Centaurs will be a playable race afaik.

Tengu, not sure. Same for Hekets. But I doubt they would just kill off everything. If they do I'm sure there would be some reason or story behind it.

Yeah, great feature to add, add's some more depth and possibly gameplay to the game. Theres rumors that jumping and such may open up new quests and attack moves. Why else would they let us climb up trees? :P

i might have to start playing this again....

I got back into it recently. Having a blast :)

I must have started & stopped playing GW, a dozen times now since it was released. I still haven't beaten the game yet either. I think I have a couple lvl 15 chars. The original I mean, I haven't wasted any money on the expansions. Seeing 100 copies of myself running around at any given time, really took the uniqueness away for me.

Can't say I've seen someone who looks exactly like me. Then again I chose some wierd hair and hair colour :P Plus I always dye my armor different colours to everyone else :P It's still possible to be unique if you really wanted to be.

That is true. I meant more along the lines of the actual character models. That & the immature crowd that seemed to infest all the servers I was on. Everyone kept "type" yelling to take off their clothes and to dance. I'd go out, explore, come back in and the same crowd would be there yelling the same thing over and over and over again an hour or more later..

I have heard the expansions are fun, though i'll not be buying them. The original GW didn't impress me enough. To each their own though.

Factions isn't so great. But I've enjoyed Nightfall a lot and started hanging around the harder end parts of the game.

Factions was kinda gay after the starter island if you weren't level 20, nobody wanted you in their party.

And my only gripe about Nightfall was the addition of heroes (personal henchmen). They ruined the game kinda in my opinion. Outposts are much quieter and everyone runs around with a 4 above their head. People rather do missions/quests with their heroes rather than real people.

Largely cause real people are stupid irritating useless 14 year olds who try to tank with a necromancer, dance during combat, don't bring self heals or resses, etc etc etc.

Yeah, that's true too. But if you're in a good party with nice people it makes it infinitely better than it is with heroes. But most people just wanna take heroes rather than risk having a "noob" in their party. They just want the best for themselves and don't wanna help others.

Gay humanity :P

I have a lot of fun with guildies. But they're never on anymore.

I've had some awesome PuGs, one group actually (heaven forbid) talked it over before we went in, so we had complimentary builds. We went through the final missions of Proph so quickly.

However the group after that ended up with me, a Monk bonding me and a Ranger as the rest of the team had a variety of stupid things, like 'LOL I forgot to bring infused armour'. Yeah very funny...
