Alright: let's discuss what we're doing with this.

The idea proposed in the original superthread (http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=120568) is essentially a sort of cartoonish deathmatch / kart racer, with forum members as playable characters.

Does everyone like that idea, and does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions for that one? I figure we should all be comfortable in the mod concept before we set it in stone, so if you have any reservations about that idea, voice them now.

Like Battle mode Mario Kart but based on HL2net and not Mario?

Sounds win.

Sounds win.

Can we have an optional setting for gore that's on par with God of War/Gears of War? Or is this simply going to be free of mature content?

I think gibbing would be cool if the work:awesome ratio isn't too high. Also, I like the idea of people being able to leave their karts and run around on foot. I think it should be map-specific as to what - every time you spawn with a kart, but some maps are just deathmatch/battle and others are races.

The on foot idea sounds great. It would be cool if we could work in some realistic or plain crazy Ratchet and Clank/Resistance: FOM type weapons. (Sheepinator anyone?)

again, sounds win. can I sign up/ be a playable character?

Ennui

We need to figure out how exactly we're doing the playable characters first. Maybe we could have a bunch of kart types based on forum stuff / members (like the banana rape kart) and then let everyone have their own avatar character that's just a different skin of the same generic player character model.

Hey, that was my idea Ennui!

Also, you should just pen out your forum races based on what gameplay you can squeeze out of them...you don't want too many, just a few. Look for the guys with the most personality. :P

There are only about a dozen of us in this I think, so you reckon to start off everyone should sketch out their own idea for their character and buggy?.

Samon
22-03-2007, 07:40 PM
The best thing to do, as it's a community project is to get as many members as possible to do a sketch, or a write up of their character and car and how it'd work within the game. The best ideas make it into the game.

Sounds perfect, then really all we need is a design document on how we want it to play.

Does it really have to be carts as long as it's some form of racing?

Shit damn, if this section wasn't in Ennui's sig I'd forget it existed.

I think that rather than the players be based of of forum personalities, there could be boss monsters or something.

Example : Instead of 5 people driving rape kart that aren't Willie and one that is, there should be 6 in generic karts racing/fighting against a gigantic bannana rape kart/monster.

So what all beyond brainstorm is needed to get this thing started? Mappers, painters, modelers, coders, cookies, sfx, someone with phat Frooty Loop wisdoms.

Geo's got a good idea there with the boss. Kinda Diddy Kong Racing style but not racing. And not Diddy Kong.

A player-controlled boss I assume? The sort of all-vs-one gameplay of Hidden?

The different tracks could be based on sections of the forums.

I have no idea what's going on.

I think we also need to finalise the demographic of who we are building this for which is slightly more specific then the hl2.net community. Bascily a design aimed at a 12-14 audiance will have a different design and style to apeal to that audiance then that of a 18-20 age range. Having this set in stone towards the start will mean all art work will be on the right track and keep with a similer style.

He makes a good point. Is this a serious game that would be aimed at older teenagers, or do we want to go Nintendo, in the vein of Mario Kart or Diddy Kong Racing?

I always thought this was a fun, Nintendo-like mod...

Ennui
24-03-2007, 08:14 PM
I have too, but we need everyone's input :p

Also, Stormy's other thread works well for discussing this, so comment there. Here, let's talk about the boss thing. I assume we'd have several bosses (a different one for each level), and then the other karts are all the same, just different colors and with whoever's avatar in them? Also, we should have the boss bit being one gamemode, the other being FFA and with just the generic karts, so that we can have racing maps and FFA DM rather than team DM.

Yea, i think that is the overall idea but i think its best to set this in stone asap. I think the average age on these forums is probly slightly older so i would suggest a demographic of around 16-20. With that in mind the artwork can take on the forum of a cartoon / nintendo style but it gives us a chance to give it our own style, darker and more detailed perhaps? More along the lines of tf2 the mario?

Ennui

I think that's smart, so long as the "older" style means it's really leaning towards a cooler, more mature animated feel, rather than Conker's Bad Fur Day or something.

For those of you too lazy to click on the subforum title, the Style Guide thread is here (http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=122080).

Just anything you like or know of that may fit a slightly more mature cartoon art style we need in the style guide thread. There is no write or wrong at the moment and we really need as much imput into this thread as possible! This is the time to have your say as to what the final product will look like :)

Heres an idea someone mentioned in the style thread. We could have maps based off different sections of the forums. I thought it was a cool idea and posted this:

D: We could have maps based on the different forums, and then we could have certain members who are famous in those sections be the enemies! IE: In one for politics it could be stern, mecha, clarky etc. General off topic could be pitzy tollbooth etc.

I vote same.

Politics must be an extremely convulted map filled with logical traps and MechaGodzilla raining down deadly irony, sarcasm and many many links, while W4D5Y fires incoherent ramblings at you.

The idea of maps being based off forum sections is great, although I have to admit I have trouble visualizing what exactly certain ones would look like. I guess the actual Half-Life 2 section would be a barren wasteland...
