A friend of mine has a copy of CoH that he torrented, and now wants to purchase a CD key, so that we can play online (without using hamachi).
Any idea of where he might go about doing that?

Cost you about $20 USD if you only require the key sent via email.

How legitimate is it though? What do they do with the game / serial afterwards?

They destroy it. Game sort of becomes useless with a used key.

Tell him to buy the game like the rest of us who dished out $40/$50 for it.
What makes him so special where he can download the game for free and then only pay $20 for a serial? :|

The fact that he's intelligent enough to do so

The fact that he's intelligent enough to do so
+1 for his intelligence then.
Still doesn't dismiss the fact that he pirated the game. :|

If he paid for the key and a cut goes to the company, it's perfectly legit.
+5 intelligence to him.

Games are sold cheaper in other countries because those people buy less games and hence the lower cost compensates. I for one import quite a few games much cheaper than retail here in Aus. The box if I want one comes in another language sure, but the game itself is the same as the EU/US release fully supporting English.
I do still buy some games at full retail Aus price. C&C3 (pre-order) and Sup Comm are recent purchases.

Most of the serials come from games that were damaged during shipping.

Well if you pay the extra $10 or whatever it turns out to be for a disc and box they're in good condition. Your probably right though.

Why not just go buy a copy instead of paying full price for a CD-Key?
It's ****ing $20

Full price is closer to $40 or $50. He's saving up to $30 by doing it this way and isn't sacrificing much of anything. Only problem is if the site resells the keys, but if they're a legitimate dealer then that shouldn't be a problem.
