My borther right now has an AMD 3000+ and an Sapphire Radeon X800 XT which he is looking to upgrade. I found a BFG Technologies GeForce 7950 GT OC (http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__BFG_Technologies_GeForce_7950_GT_OC_Video_Card,__26151803) and a AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 (http://www.pricegrabber.com/p__AMD_Athlon_64_FX_55_Processor,__8028898) which I suggested.

He can't pay a whole lot, he's still pretty young and doesn't have a job. He's gonna be using Christmas cash to get this stuff. So, is this a good upgrade? I know the card is, I'm more wondering about the CPU since I'm an Intel guy myself. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (Oh, he's doing this mostly so he can play games like SCDA and R6V along with other newer games)

That's a good CPU for gaming as long as he isn't multitasking. 2.6GHz is might fast for that price. If you want something a little bit more future proof for gaming or whatever else he does...or better for multitasking then check out the dual core CPUs like AMD's 4200+ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103741) or Intel's E6300 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005).

Hmmm... well, he's trying to keep the same mobo and spend less than 200 on each, but I convinced him to pay a bit more for the card as long as he was getting a cheaper CPU. Thanks for the advice though. He shouldn;t be doing much multi-tasking anyway.

Yeah. that FX chip is plenty fast and a good price.

Edit: They also still might have the X2 4200+ for Socket 939 FYI

I'm being a heathen and buying a Core 2 Duo for my next upgrade. They got good marks in PC Pro compared to the CPU's on the market, plus the fact they are fairly cheap.
