So what language was that? Troll? Extinct Nordish? It's Finnish.

I find it hilarious just how much importance people place on vocals in music. I've actually played the most brutal shit in the world before, and some people have said "awesome, except for the vocals." What do you expect? The Backstreet Boys singing eight-way computer-generated harmonies on top? Give me a break. As soon as you add even a hint of growling, snarling, screaming, etc., everyone turns away, no matter how melodic (or not) the music actually is.

I actually thought the song was ok, except for the skinny nerd covered in fake blood yelling his voice all to shit.

Seriously, the growling black metal voice is crap. Song would have been awesome if he had just sang normally. When he's talking at the beginning of the video, his voice sounds fine. There was no need for him to go all hccckkkkgggnnh all over it.

Also- the keyboard would have been ok for a little contrast, but that was waaaay too much contrast.

Yeah, he isn't exactly the best guy out there when it comes to stage presence, and his voice does tend to be a lot better in the studio. Moonsorrow do use clean vocals, for the record, but the ratio is probably about 20/80 or so for clean to black. It really is an acquired taste, I'll admit, but it annoys me to no end that people are so fixated on the vocals that they won't listen to the music at all. The huge advantage of death/black metal vocals is that you can instantly communicate emotion with them in a way that you simply can't with regular singing styles.

Also, Geogaddi... techno? Jesus Christ, if there is one genre considered to be in worse taste than metal, it's that rotting shit that you listen to.

The huge advantage of death/black metal vocals is that you can instantly communicate emotion with them in a way that you simply can't with regular singing styles.I'll be honest with you - the music itself, in that song, was okay. The vocals? The only emotion that was communicated to me was "grr!" I could not understand a word he was saying. Was he happy? Was he lamenting the loss of a loved one? Was he decrying the state of public affairs? Was he growling about demons and white light?

The meaning in lyrics is communicated equally through lyricism, melody, and delivery. If you hit all the notes in your wonderfully-written song but you sing like you really wished you were doing something else, you suck. If you sing great lyrics with lots of emotional drive, but you can't hit a note to save your life, you suck. If your lyrics are great and you've got all the power in the world behind your voice, but I can't understand what you're singing, you suck.

Also, Geogaddi... techno? Jesus Christ, if there is one genre considered to be in worse taste than metal, it's that rotting shit that you listen to.Techno only gets a bad rap because of pop techno, which is popular for the same reason hardcore rap is. I have no idea why that shit is popular.

Techno is built on the same principles as every other kind of music. Good melodies, good harmonies, arrangements that are at least decent, instruments (or in some cases, synth-instruments) that complement each other, etc etc. It doesn't make a difference whether or not you're actually "playing" whichever instruments are in your song, because in the end any kind of music is nothing but noise. The only thing that separates good music from bad music is whether the noise it makes is pleasing to the ear.

Was he lamenting the loss of a loved one? Was he decrying the state of public affairs? Was he growling about demons and white light?I don't know. It's not in English. I really don't care what he's singing about all that much, either. Most of Moonsorrow's lyrics deal with mythology, fictional or real, often with a tragic tone, but I can't say anything more specific than that. I'm sure translations are available out there for those willing to look for them.

So? That should be obvious to anyone. All of your points apply to extreme metal vocals, as well; the aesthetic is different but the fundamentals are relatively the same. It takes an incredible amount of talent to really pull off harsh vocals live with power, emotion and consistency, and though you don't have to be able to sing in key, it certainly helps, and you can definitely be off-key with harsh vocals. The fact that a lot of singers switch between harsh and clean vocals while playing an instrument at the same time (often with complex instrumental passages) says quite a bit about the talent of some of these musicians.

Techno only gets a bad rap because of pop techno, which is popular for the same reason hardcore rap is. I have no idea why that shit is popular.

I love this song.

Great band. Truly underrated.

I'm gonna break the rules a bit and post another a-ha video I found recently:

A bit corny, but some cool special effects.

An admitted failure by the director's admission, but it's always held a place in my heart. 1:15 mark into the song makes my spine tingle every time.

Chris Cunningham's work may not always be gold, but even the peel out is miles ahead of what most others can muster.

I generally don't care for Bjork, but I do like that song. And Chris Cunningham again... of course it's going to be sex.

Yeah, having looked into it some more, she has made some pretty dodgy stuff, but most of the songs on the Homogenic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homogenic) album are damn fine. A lot like the one I posted. She has got one hell of a voice though.

I've been meaning to get into Bjork for a while now because the few songs I've heard are really good. Tell me, wheres the best place to start? I really liked that song, btw.

Well I only really started listening to her last friday, but if you liked that and like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gG_ymIc140k) and this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5nNfbTS6N4) then you should look into Homogenic. Its the only one i've had a proper listen to, and its excellent.

Awesome. To be fair, I could just listen to these songs with just her voice, the nice music is just a cool bonus. It's great.

As far as I know she actually made an album with songs entirely composed of her voice in different layers (acappella or whatever it is). Havent heard it though.

I have all Bjork's stuff. Medulla is her best album, but that may be better for advanced bjork users.

A good bet would be the Greatest Hits, to get a good sampling of the whole pre-Medulla career spectrum.
It's also the only straight-up album that has the single version of All Is Full of Love, which is rightly considered one of her best songs.

I was a fan of the sugarcubes for awhile before she went solo ..they were pretty good for their time. Bjork is a musician's musician ..thankfully she has too much integrity to go mainstream
